Pfft, you call that snow. In my day we were glad of the snow. It were better than walking the 54 miles to the coal mine outside Harrogate in bare feet across boiling lava to work 18 hours down the mine before leaving the mine and walking another 16 miles to school. Of course in them days we were grateful for the chance to walk across lava and snow in our bare feet, we were lucky to even have feet. Course, anything less than 18 feet of snow was just a light dusting, we didn't call it snow until it were above the tops of t' trees.

Not only that, but we still had time to be respectful to us elders. And no-one ever had to lock their doors on account of thieves not being invented yet. And don't get me started on this so-called modern music. Or modern food.

[/Yorkshire]

Pifft, and you think you had it hard in the old days. My expensive school shoes were so heavy because their souls were made of real leather, that I used to get ligament damage just walking from my chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce into the school building. Can you imagine the utter monotony of having to sit in a real-leather overstuffed chair while I took my lessons. But worst of all were the five-course silverware launches served at my school, as the afternoon was shear hell with my overfull stomach. So I would thank you Sir not to compare you happy and comfortable upbring, with my poor and bitter experience of school life.

Brings a tear to my eye, it does.

Work from home day!

would like to. 10 to 20 inch of snow expected in a few hours before i get back home.....

Hmmm ... that doesn't sound so good. I'm going for a recce to the Ardennes area (IVO Sedan) on friday morning and staying until sunday. Was hoping for a little better weather :-/

Well, it should be perfect for your students, Per. I mean, lousy snowing weather in the Ardennes in November or December. No one would launch a major offensive in that weather in that place.

True ... But then, we will go there with our students coming May ...

This is an interesting point. From an military educational perspective, which Ardennes battle do you feel is most critical to show your students on site and why?

I'll give you a true staff officer answer; "That depends ... [on what points/things/themes you want to teach or discuss]" ...

It also depends on what meaning you put in the word "battle" - Low level skirmish? A campaign?

In this particular case however, we're will mainly look at the 1940 campaign and the values of "Auftragstaktik (/"Mission type orders")" and wargaming an operational plan to name just a few points among many. The asymmetry between French and German doctrines that paved the way for the outcome is also interesting to discuss. Having access to relevant background material from both sides and trying to understand why the commanders made the decisions they made, and doing it in the actual terrain where they made those, is also invaluable. Then, trying to synthezise those lessons learned into something that has relevance nowadays (or in the future) is also something that we always do.

We've going to have to change the structure of this trip for various reasons, so that's why we are going on a new recce. Given how many battles that has been (historically) fought in that area however, I wouldn't be surprised if we happen to find some new interesting "stop". Some years ago, we had a (from the 1940 campaign) deviating stop at Bastogne, where the theme for discussion was "tenacity" One other stop that hasn't got anything to with 1940 is at Verdun, where we will discuss "consequences". A sobering place to discuss that theme.

Per, you have a very cool job!

Short version: "No".

Long version: Since I happen to be youngest (!!!) teacher, both in actual age as well as years of service, that position is already "occupied" ...

BTW, the YouTube (the links above) host all 8 episodes (I think 4 parts per episode)...

Also, as far as I saw it is very very accurate - no more Stalinist / Brezhnev political history that had no connection to reality!

They've given up. They're going to announce they tried, but seeing as the only aliens they could find were either cartoons or illegal ones from Mexico it just wasn't worth the effort. Too hard, and no Wookies, Green Slave girls. They're also afraid if they do make the effort that they'll find Jar-Jar Binks, so it's a no-win situation.

Happy St Andrew's Day!

Are there any traditional ways to celebrate said holiday? Invading England or the like?

St. Patrick's just encourages alcohol abuse (not that that's a bad thing in moderation) but having mostly Irish ancestry I tend to observe it.

Thank you again for this lead, Leo. I am enjoying this quite a bit. I'm very proud of them for finally honestly stating that on the border in '41 the Red Army was not caught with their pants down. They were beaten fair and square (or as fair as war allows) and that errors of command led to the greatest disasters. On the other hand, its still disappointing that they refuse to acknowledge just how good the Wehrmacht was at what it did. You still get those notes of "Nazi fanaticism" and "mad animal" ferocity.

My favorite quote in a long time;

"If you desire to remain in your present ranks, I demand that you cease these criminal frontal attacks on well-defended villages, cease frontal attacks on high ground with good fields of observation. Attack only through ravines, forests and ground which limits fields of fire." -Zhukov

Tom Label is hoping that you're wrong... though his team just lost their big lead in the Iron Bowl.

Brad - don't ever mention this again! I still can't get to sleep at night. If you think Saban had steam coming out of his ears during the press conference, you should have seen me the last two days. Just don't get it!!!! But, hey, next year will be better!

JOHN - so glad you are enjoying Alabama!!!

At least you can say that the state of Alabama has (hopefully for Auburn) had two National Champions in consecutive years!!!! Bye, bye Florida!!!!

Awww... Tom, it's hard for this Georgia Bulldog to find himself feeling very sorry for ya! Look at our past few seasons...

I will, however, agree with the sentiment in your last sentence (not that my team has had any luck over those dadgum Gators!).

OK - didn't know you were a BULLDOG. I feel your pain. I've pulled for GA all season long especially how bad the luck was at the beginning of the season with the suspensions and all. I was really hoping you guys luck against FL - I HATE them so much!

I reallly like your coach as much as I like Saban! I hope he will be there for years to come as he is really, really good!!!
Just give him some time!!!

I would love to see a bama / ga game no matter who wins - that would be classic!!!!

Please forgive my typing as I have a borken hand at the moment but adjusting.

Thanks, Tom. I like Mark Richt too... I'm not one of those idiots looking for the flavor of the month. He has done a superb job in Athens and I believe that he will take us back to the upper level of the conference. That's why the past couple of years have been so painful - not only have I had to watch painful games but have also had to deal with those idiots who think that firing the head coach is the only way to fix things...

I was a student in Athens from 1976-81, so I lived through the season where we lost to both Wake Forest and Virginia (in Sanford Stadium!) as well as the undefeated national championship year. Having been a student on campus during that year allows me to accept whatever comes down the line - I was there for the very best year and enjoy all the memories.

The Tide will be back, of course, and Auburn will not stay on top. Hopefully Florida will not be up there...

Mynok, while I love to tease the Gamecock fans about being the most delusional fanbase in the country (every year you hear screams from Columbia "this will be our year" - usually those screams die out before September ends) I have a lot of respect for you guys. How many traditionally mediocre teams can regularly sell out their huge stadium?

Y'all deserve to be in the SEC title game, even if your coach is a jerk...  I think that I'll still pull for Auburn, sorry.
