Have just gotten off the phone to the Mother in Law who lives about 20 miles out of town in country Queensland. The rivers have been up and down three times since Christmas and last night the all weather bridge finally went under so she is now completely cut off.

The really tragic thing is the bridge is choked with building materials, furniture and personal possessions from someones property upstream.

The other roads out of the area have been gone for weeks and I mean gone, not just flooded with 20ft chasms where the road used to be.... Not that there is much point going into town as the main highway has been cut for days and the stores are empty. The single local bakery is now only doing bread and limiting the amount they sell per customer.

She will be right as her property is in a safe location but things are going to be interesting over the next couple of days/weeks.

Please spare a thought or others who are not nearly so fortunate, especially as the floods rapidly work their way down to the major metropolitan areas of Ipswich/Brisbane.

BTW, These floods have almost hit the levels of the central Queensland floods of 1942 (though they weren't as widespread). Something else the game doesn't simulate.

I'll keep them in my thoughts. What a situation.

It's interesting that you say "almost" as bad as '42. Natures cycles are swinging back around and we can likely expect more such that hasn't been seen in decades or longer.

Glad your MiL is safe, Reg, but have been following the massive scale flooding and thinking about so many being displaced for a while now.  It must be a helpless feeling to watch flood waters rise.

Thanks for the concern. The MiL will be fine but she is freaking out a bit as expected. Its times like this is difficult to be working interstate.

Holy Crap!! The Wivenhoe dam was built after the 1974 floods as the major flood control mechanism for the Brisbane valley. The chart below shows a 1.2 Million Megalitre dam going from 102% capacity to 176% in just 4 days whilst they attempted to regulate the amount of floodwater passing down the river. Soon they will have no choice but to open the floodgates (if they haven't already)!! Brisbane is going to be in for an interesting time over the next couple of days.....

EDIT:
quote:

Water Release Update (Tuesday 11 January, 1.00pm)
Wivenhoe Dam
Releases through five gates have been increased to 344,000 megalitres as at 1.00pm and may need to be increased to around 516,000 megalitres a day by Wednesday 12 January due to rainfall in the Stanley and Upper Brisbane.

http://www.seqwater.com.au/public/home

This is half the capacity of the dam released in a single day....

I will keep her in my prayers.

I have been reading about these floods. Aren't they some of the worst your country has seen ?

Schools are closed and I'm not going anywhere today.  Fireplace is going and I have hot coffee.  Time to get some work done.  I'll probably be much more productive today than if I were in the office, getting interrupted all the time.
