Any of you techie types able to recommend a decent harddrive?  I'm upgrading to Windows 7 soon and I'll be looking at getting a new drive specifically for games and docs etc.

What's your budget?

I'd prefer to keep it below £100, but I can stretch that a bit if it's needed.

Some of the best drives on the market right now are Western Digital.

Here's a nice SATA drive:

I'd plan to get two of them and mirror them so your computer doesn't chunk when it dies.

Yes, Simon is right. The man at the computer shop also told me that it was a known fault with some versions of Windows and that I'd need to buy a new copy that wasn't bugged.

I'm soon going to be in the market for a big external HD to use as storage for all of our home computers.  I'm looking at the Western Digital models, possibly as big as 3TB!

I find it suprising that IDE drives are more expensive than SATA. I'm in need of replacing my old IDE for my now repaired Pentium 4. (the one who's motherboard caught fire). It had an old 80Gig IDE with bad sectors....but still boots and is functional. Sooner or later it will go however and the 2nd IDE (a mere "15" Gig which tells you how old it is), got put into my modern system as a boot disk for XP.

Cheapest one i've found is over $50.00 which is more than i paid for a 500gig SATA!

a big tease. The temp already went up overnight and the snow has turned to slush. This winter is seriously sucking.

High winds did knock out our power for a while. Double D fortunately got me up to do his duty so i was able to reset clocks and not be late to work.

Bummer that vol 3 is still not out. Hard to follow up a book like that!

Getting home from Issaquah to Fall city last nite was....."interesting" Flurries and high blowing winds reduced visibility to nil yet some nimrods insisted on going over 50mph. (I was in full old fart mode and played it a safe 35-40)

By this morning though it was pure rain with the roads only slushy. Don't know why people around here are still all lady a ga-ga over things. The east coast is getting all the good stuff.

Dag! That's a good looking drive. Unfortunately, I'm looking for an external, USB connected drive for backup and storage, so it won't be anywhere near as fast at that one. Been keeping an eye on them at Best Buy and the prices are slowly dropping after Christmas....

I don't know much about 5.25" 'floppies', Nik. Do you have a lot of experience with those?
