Thx for the offer. really appreciate it.

My primary challenge at the moment is that i have some debts i was in the middle of settling. That makes me squeemish about resigning the job and moving. Hence, my timetable is up in the air in regards to the full move thing.

Jobs are so hard to find right now....so it makes me nervous.

Nik, as often, I'm late to the party, but my door's open. PM sent.

I know we don't do politics here (and for good reason), but it's still fantastic to watch today's events in Cairo. Haven't seen anything like it since November 1989...

That isn't politics. That's justice. And I agree. I remember watching the wall fall, and for us over-40's, that was an astonishing change to our Cold War world.

Good heavens, man!! Did you have to bring that up?

Seriously, the regimes that are being overthrown now are a different breed than the monarchies of Europe in 1848. Better some ways, worse in others.

Well, jeez, louize, it's Girl Scout Season. Neighbors came by the other evening and set me down, saying "we know you're not from around here, but you seem ok, so here's your opportunity to fit right in - seems our daughter is a Girl Scout and has some cookies to sell .." and then smile and wait with that expectant expression.

"Cool, says I, she must be a regular darling. We have Girl Scouts in Cali, too. We have so many out there, I made a rule that I will only buy one box from anybody, but I will buy one box from everybody who comes to the door." So the neighbors are happy and, sure enough, there's 3 or 4 knocks on the door, and I go to the grocery store this morning and go out the exit and there's this table with mom and three of the cutest little things you will ever see ... "hi sir, do you want to buy some cookies?"

Anyway, I got Thin Mint, Peanut Butter, and Shortbread cookies up the wazoo; enough to last until perhaps this time next year. Anybody got any fun recipies that I can use these in. They do get stale after a while and I would hate for them to go to waste.

Ciao. John

Thinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Minnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnt!!!

Put a couple of boxes of this treasure in the freezer.....way in the back behind the bag of frozen peas. Then, in about July, when you are afraid your ears are going to melt off, pull them out and eat them while they are still ice cold!!!!!

When I was a kid, Girl Scout cookies were made by FFV (Fine Foods of Virginia). Their plant was twelve blocks from my house. When the wind blew from that direction it was pure torture.

To this day I blame my terminal sweet tooth on the Girl Scouts...

I honestly missed most of it, as we didn't have any live TV feeds on the ship yet.  Read about it a lot when I got home.

Right now, it depends on the people running the military.

I was in Keflavik. While the rest of the world celebrated the German future unification with joy, we watched with trepedation. It would be another two+ years before the Russians stood down. They were anything but joyous, and we were very nervous.

I'm a little fearful that we might be witnessing the 1989 Berlin wall coming down, but the 1979 Iranian revolution. We don't know the future. Maybe we should hold off on the celebration a little while.

I hope that they follow the south American model that we sometimes see...the military as a liberalizing factor. But let me be a devils advocate here. Does any one recall what Mubarak did for work before he became Sadat's deputy and successor? Here's hint...the same job Sadat did. And Nassau before him. They belonged to the same military that just took over.

Heh...I got (willingly so, I freely admit) nailed at work yesterday. 4 boxes of peanut butter, 2 thin mints, two Doseedos-some caramel / shortbread thingy, a box of Samoans (cookies, dudes, cookies!). Then, on my way home, a coworker gifted me two more boxes of peanut butter cookies.

As for recipes . . . thin mints and vodka.

Hmmm...this seems a complex recipe. Do you somehow crumble the thin mints into the vodka or freeze one into the other? Or just eat the bleedin' cookies and then follow it up with vodka?

21. Yeah, it was one of the 'flashbulb' memories I have of political happenings of the 1980s. I remember watching Sadat get assassinated (uncensored), the pope getting shot, Reagan getting shot and, of course, the Challenger. Most people my age have several of these memories etched into their mind's eye.

Yeah, you're right, Steve. I am skeptical that the Egyptian military is a force for independent and benign change. Their hands aren't exactly clean either and they have Mubarak's fingerprints all over them.

I can't suspend my disbelief and assume that Mubarak isn't still controlling events right now-at some level. He's wily and slippery as hell-I find it difficult to believe that he won't use all his tools and chicanery to effect an end to his satisfaction.

I'm not pessamistic. But my sainted mother-in-law used to say "hope for the best, plan to deal with the worst, and take whatever the good Lord sends you". I'm just saying that 1) although we should hope for the best for the Egyptian people, it is their life, choice and country. Wish them the best, help if they'll take it, and mind our own buisness if they don't. 2) Let's hold the happiness for a day or two and wait to see the outcome, and maybe the REAL story which I don't belive for a moment we'll see on CNN.Save the speaches and hosanna's for later. Hot air is hot air, and we'll need the heat later if this winter continues.

I'd also like to point out that one of the greatest Arab leaders and reformers, Attaturk, was a military hero and leader.

True. Of course, the region's seen plenty of half-baked dictatorships arise from military coups too. (cough) Kadaffi (cough)

Yeah I remeber all of them. (Challenger especially ...I was there. And of course 9/11 the Pentagon. I had the fun of watching the building my wife was in burn). For me the list began in 1983 (Lebanon) several IRA attacks in London (again 1st hand). It produces a degree of cynicism. But you still have to hang on to that little bit of optisim. AS HL Mencken used to alude, the pleased cynic is the one proved wrong.

Actually I'm not. The Egyptian officer class is among the most educated and cosmopolitan in their country. But do you see our Ivy league brie chomping diplomats and leaders giving them a chance? They'll tar them with being "militarists".And like I said Attaturk was a military hero (at Gallipolli). But among liberal intelligensia Uniform=bad.
