February is almost over, but it continues to make it's presence felt.

We lost another member of The Greatest Generation this morning.  I have no URL link to a news story to post, as I don't think it has made any of the papers.

Paul Sorrentino, a veteran of the 29th Infantry Division and the D-Day landings, and my Poppy, moved on to the next stage of his journey this morning, after spending 91 years in this stage.  He was a character on this stage in every aspect of the word and he truly LIVED his 91 years.

I'm having a shot of the best rum in the world (a double as he would have wanted it ) in his honor, ironically at 1111 hours local.  If any of my Brothers get a chance sometime today, please drink to his service with me.

Poppy, we were lucky to have you in our lives and we will miss you!

I will raise one to him tonight, for sure. Sorry about your loss, but he sure had a good run it looks like.

I will hoist a cognac in his honor. And very sorry for your loss.

He wasn't a vet (i think) but he was an important part of my childhood. My dad emailed me and my brother yesterday to inform us that our family Pastor [long since retired] whom we spent our formulative years listening too and whom i was under for Confirmation....passed away the night before. I was bummed. He was the archtypical minister.....a strong and good person.

Febuary 2011 is certainly going to go down as one of the most turbulent months ever

Sorry to hear you have lost another piece of your past, Nik. This month will go down in the Lore of THE THREAD!!! as a very turbulent one, but keep in mind not all turbulence is bad. It's very likely that getting jostled out of our old ruts will be very healthy for us going forward.

BTW Nik, my loving wife is still securely by my side, thank God, but I'm with you on the job front. Yesterday was my last day at my old job. It's going to be a very good opportunity for me to move on to something I love even more, and we still have our security, but it's stressful none the less. If you do decide to migrate in our direction, it would be awesome, but you'll have to get in line behind me for a job!

What do you plan to do next ?

And boy this has been a weird month.

Not exactly sure how to answer that because I am not sure what you are looking for. I guess I will just sum up what some of the other posts I have made have disclosed and you can ask whatever you would like to know from there.

Been war gaming for 15-20 years. Probably cut my teeth computer wise on the old v for victory series. Done a bit of board gaming versions but nothing on the scale of more than a few weeks to finish.

USAF (H discharge not retired) avionics guy going green to gold. got my 9g pin and supersonic one too but when my UPT package got ready I opted out. we went through ~29 base commanders in 2 years and got blackballed then bracked (after I got out but we all saw the writing on the wall). Joined back in the 1990's against my mother's wishes for the right reasons... call it God and Country if you need.

Midwest area but not by birth or raising...

I like to send digital troops on long walks on pacific beaches???

Been around these parts about a year. Have not started a PBEM because I havn't been dedicated enough and won't do someone wrong by leaving early.

Professionally I now develop and write algorithms and controls. Having a BSME, 50+ hours of electronics, and been doing embedded code (math and logic) for 17 years gives me an interesting skill set. Hoping to get the company into neural nets and such this year. Debating offering my help with the AI...

about sum it up?

Ironically, there is. My friend was part of FEMA for a while. They are planning for it. They just don't know when it'll occur....but it will sooner or later....thats why there's all the hand wringing out her regarding the ancient Highway 520 floating bridge and the equally aged Alaskan way Viaduct downtown (highway 99)

Restaurant in Central Coast, Australia

(It is an extremely windy day so we have to keep the double doors closed. A customer and her 9 yr old daughter walks up to the doors, and walks away. They don’t go very far. A coworker goes outside to start cleaning tables.)

Customer: “Excuse me, are you open?”

Co-Worker: “Yes, we are.”

Customer: “But I stood in front of the doors and they didn’t open.”

Co-Worker: “No, ma’am. You have to push them.”

(The customer and her daughter opens the door and walks in. The daughter goes off to the bathroom. We are an old west themed restaurant, so everything, even the toilet door signs are changed to suit. The daughter comes back a few seconds later.)

Customer: “What’s wrong honey? Couldn’t you find them?”

Daughter: “I’m not sure if I’m a cowboy or a cowgirl.”

Video Rental Store in Toronto, ON, Canada

(We are closed and counting money from the register, when a customer approaches the locked door and tries to open it. She notices the closed sign and tries the door again, then knocks on the door loudly and pulls hard on the door. So hard in fact, that she manages to fit her shoe through the crack. Worried about a broken door, I open the door quickly.)

Customer: “Are you open?”

Me: “No, we are closed.”

Customer: “Then why did you open the door?!”

More beer and hockey. I love this season.

We're having a totally crazy derby vs SkAIK. Scoring on all those chances we missed against your favourite team. Absolutely wonderful.

Yeah, that was just absurd. From 0-2 to 4-2 in one period or something like that.

We got another undeserved win really. Im a bit worried about what sort of form we are in now. Playoffs coming up and we are playing like third graders. Its weird that we always get these slumps right after the 1-2 week pauses in the series. I think our young players are partying too much during the breaks. Ive heard rumors about that aswell, that they are down at the clubs 3-4-5 days in a row during the breaks.

We were dominated for 1.5 period and was 0-2 behind. Then they made those 4 goals in 3 mins 20 secs and turned the game around.

Stu and Andre, it was mostly satisfactory on my part. Effectively, my job went to China without me. I was given the choice of a separation package or a crappy process to try to find another position. I chose door #1.

There are lots of good jobs in this area, and I'm very fortunate that I can take my time to find something that I really like instead of having to take the first thing I can get.

Belated morning tithe.

Just skimmed the last few pages. My heart goes out to all you guys who have lost loved ones and whose family members are in difficulty.

Proposal for Mike and Nik. You two should start a techie business and take over the world like Microsoft cisco and google. If you need a customer service director I will be happy to submit my resume.

German from my mother's side. My dad's side is English and i was told (allegedly) that our paternal side ancestors trace all the way back to Queen Ann's court....but who knows. Since it's still Febuary were i to look myself up on lineage.com or whatever website now caters to it, i'd probably find that i was the waterboy to Brave Sir Robin.

As i like to put it to people...I have a lineage that has simotaniously won and lost two World Wars. No wonder i'm the way i am.

for what it's worth, at least you got the option of a sep package. Me, i'm gonna have to vote with my feet or take a job noone wants. They don't consider it a "demotion" because in their eyes its a "lateral" move but thats bunk.
