Simple fact is this:

- The picture is not offensive in any way shape or form.
- Just as important, the comments posted on the thread concerning the picture were not offensive or demeaning.
- There was essentially a few harmless comments made in a spirit of fun. Nothing for anyone to get uptight about.
- One person made an issue of it. The same person who - while deciding in his infinite wisdom that the picture of the young lady would get the thread locked - quite happily took part in a political discussion re Libya just a few days beforehand on The Thread.
- This "discussion" quickly turned nasty and that person made the following delightful post - "There's not one square centimeter of Libya that's worth one drop of European or American blood. So no, Hortlund, (you stuck-up, holier-than-thou git) I don't care."
- So political talk, abuse of another threadster for daring to have an alternative opinion, and (mild) swearing is okay but not that picture? Double standards per chance?

Anyway, I was drawn to The Thread because it was supposedly a place "where people who do not take themselves too seriously" could hang out and post whatever came to mind. There are some good guys on here, but frankly I get too much grief from one individual to make it worthwhile.

Hortlund is not a Threadster but a passerby. Those two have had run-ins before. You would be wise not to judge about that of which you know nothing.

Really? I've seen him post many times here. This used to be a welcoming place. I am very , very dissappointed with some of the comments I've seen posted here. In the past I've always defended the forum (and especially this thread).

Now I'm wondering if that was a mistake.

Warspite1

Mynok - that comment is unworthy of you.

Firstly, the fact that they have history is - as you well know - not the point. Even if they "have history" the language used in that post, and the tone of the comment, is not up to forum rules and standards. Nor indeed was the nature of the political discussion in the first place.

Secondly, I assumed from USS America's oft repeated refrain about this thread being open to anyone, that a "threadster" was anyone that took up that invitation and joined in the fun. If that is not the case, and instead there is an elite group that can verbally treat "non-threadsters" or "passers by" in a way that breaks forum rules then so be it. Is that what you are saying?

I agree with Warspite on this, Mynok. Yes I know their history, and yes I agree that its not the point. If the Thread is to be a self-policing entity it must adhere to some simple rules of adult behavior. For example, if you feel like taking a swipe at someone, perhaps you should walk away from your keyboard while you consider it. Again, the topic and history are not at issue, but I submit that that comment was completely uncalled for.

We have all been guilty of it at one time or another, but none of us have made it a habit, except one person.

I have some sympathy for T because I think we are similar creatures. I, too, have the annoying habit of going off half-cocked when pet peeves are posted. Not an excuse nor an attempt to defend him. He needs neither from me. Just saying I'm a little more patient because I kind of know where he's coming from.

And to add....we all (finger pointed directly at me) would do well to count a bit higher before posting sometimes.

QED. T, on the other hand, seems to revel in his posts. At the very least, he seems to be making no effort whatsoever to curb or control these outbursts in any way. Again, I submit that the topic of the conversation, the opponent or your history has nothing to do with it. I think that at some point it behooves and adult individual to question whether making yet another outburst is indicative of the topic or one's own inadequate reaction to stimulus.

As far as it being inoffensive to post the photo in question about it being "inoffensive" - well, i've seen photos on billboards in Britain that would quite frankly get you arrested over in the USA. This forum is, for better or worse, run from the USA so, alas, we must conform to local standards.

Sorry Bob, but I've seen billboards with women wearing less in the middle of NYC and to my knowledge not one concerned mother had filed any complaints that her child is now mentally damaged because he caught sight of a partially exposed boob (which this young lady does not, by the way).

As I said in the other post, I feel that there is nothing objectionable about the picture other than what an impartial observer might read into it.

Really? Do you go on women's forums that discuss such things?

There are billboards here in Dallas that i've thought were pretty funny (and with NO photos, i might add) that have apparently caused rather marked outrage in the feminine community (this from my wife talking to members of the local women's club).

So, just because you or i don't think its offensive does not mean it isn't offensive to other people.

Matrix originally stated they did not want pictures of scantily clad females posted here on the Thread. Despite the fact that you or i don't think they are offensive, they've told us not to do it. You can ignore this if you like, but don't be too surprised if someone decides to lock up the Thread (either temporarily or permanently) because of violations of the terms of use.

It's ironic that in the real world I'm very patient and rarely reach the point of anger. Boards seem to drag out a different persona unfortunately.

Not sure why that is. I do know that I fear greatly what would happen should I be pushed past that point in reality.

There is the bit that one can be reasonable sure that they will never get the snot beaten out of them for posting stuff online which would probably get their teeth kicked in if they said it to someones face.

I, for one, make a concious effort to stay as close to my real world persona as I can to avoid that pitfall.

Of course! and i THINK the mod that tends to monitor this part of the forum is rather forgiving/understanding. Or maybe too busy to be bothered... that doesn't mean that we might not get some OTHER mod taking a look here, especially if someone takes it into their head that the Thread needs closing for whatever reason... i.e., someone might get annoyed with me, and knowing that i like to post here, they could systematically pick out "offensive" posts and hit the "report post" button... if some mod who was hard-core on the forum rules happened to get the complaint, then, sayonara Thread.

Also: the reason given by the mods when they first set up this rule is that they said there were plenty of underaged kids reading the forum... lots of parents use "nannyminder" software that evaluates the various websites. If the "nannyminder" decides the website is no longer "family friendly" due to language, pictures or whatever - the website is blocked. If matrixgames.com website is blocked, Matrix Games will lose money. If the Thread provokes the "nannyminder" software into blocking the website, i suspect Matrix very well may shut down the Thread permanently, especially since we were told not to do it in the first place.

EDIT: Note that the standard of what is offensive is not what you or i think is offensive: it is what the "nannyminder" software thinks is family friendly/not family friendly.

Yuri the only standard I judge on, the only rule that I understand should not be broken, is no personal attacks. We've just had one here, and no one brought it up. We are all so fixated on miss thong butt that we completely blew off what really matters. That's why I'm dissapointed. Actually I'm down right PO'd. So I'm going to take a nice , long self imposed vacation before I completely loose my mind and say a few things I shouldn't. Because I understand self censorship and civic responsibility. But the "He's not one of us and he has no right to speak" crap makes me totally ballistic. And as you suggest, I don't want to say anything I'll regret.

The right to be a Thread brother is earned. It's earned by several things, but one of the foremost is not bringing up the political crap like Hortlund that caused T's ire. Have your opinion on whether it was overdone, but don't fail to recognize that the instigation was anti-Thread principles. From the start.

Nope, didn't miss it and didn't ignore it. I just don't feel like letting it get to me just now. Although it does make me sad that one person with no common sense is driving good guys like you away.

Perhaps so*, but then shouldn't the same principle affect all parties? Did not one of the same people start a political discussion shortly before that provoked some anger from other folk that post here with some regularity? (much outrage and exchange of green-buttons ensued.)

The lack of adherence to not discussing politics is one reason (among several) that i have not posted here nearly as often as i have in the past. Perhaps others feel the same way.

While my posts may not be missed, perhaps someone who might contribute something useful/amusing/wise/insightful to the Thread isn't bothering to do so as seeing a double standard applied, and thus shying away.

EDIT: *Not agreeing nor disagreeing with this statement for the moment: i will have to consider it. i don't necessarily think that one post on the Thread makes one a "Thread brother", particularly if it is made for a malicious purpose... but what does make one a "Thread brother"? One post made in good faith? Ten? A hundred? Something to consider/discuss.

I disagree. I don't see this as a highschool clique. As far as I'm concerned if you have a sense of humor I'm happy to see you here.

If someone comes in talking politics you nicely tell them to stop. As I recall that conversation was pretty much a free for all between a few people do I don't think you can plant it on hortlund alone.

We've actually had a couple of nice days here in London - I was even able to cut the grass in my shorts on Friday!! - but typically it then turned cold over the weekend.....

I'm sure Spring will turn up at some point.
