Most public places in the US, like train platforms, no longer allow smoking.  It varies by state, but more and more are effectively pushing smoking out of public places, even outdoors.

Edit: BTW, as an asthmatic who's mother, father and brother all smoked while I was growing up, I'm all in favor of the restrictions.

It must be most difficult for you to be living in the heart of tobacco country.

I grew up in Richmond and started smoking at eleven, but I quit at sixteen. My dad was hacking for about ten minutes every morning (and died of throat cancer eleven years later) and I decided that I didn't want to go that way. I was the kid who played outside most of the time, while my sisters were more indoors oriented and both had constant bronchitis while I didn't. And smokers still try to tell me that second hand smoke never hurt anybody...

Brad, it's quite different in the Triangle from most of the rural areas of NC.  Many of the more restrictive smoking laws are in place here in NC as well, and it's quite easy to get away from it most of the time.

I love my pipe, but I'm quite on board with the public smoking bans. I don't have a problem with places who want to be private clubs and allow smoking though. Smokers should have some spots to enjoy themselves with others of like minds. I'm in favor of balance.

I have friends smoke cigars and pipes on my back deck.  I can easily go inside if the wind blows the wrong way.

I remember coming home from college on holidays and such, when you opened the linen closet to get a towel or washcloth you could smell the cigarette smoke in them...

I used to get packages from my mother when I was deployed on the ship.  A cloud would come out of the box when opened.

One Christmas patriol a young lady gave her bf a set of her underwear soaked in her perfume. She'd been thoughtful enough to seal it in a plastic bag but when he opened it you could smell it throughout the boat.

Simon, where is the rest of Europe this morning?  Are they all struggling with the back to work grind?

Hi all,

Yearly electrical maintenance here (but it would be nice if they announced it before Easter holiday and not on the day it is happening )... didn't have electricity for 4+ hours at work... all servers had to be brought back one by one and checked...

Wow! Quite the dragnet! What an unusual collection of law enforcement agencies...

Quick question for our Brit THREAD brothers: If one indicates "Attention!" once, must one follow with repeated calls for "Attention!!" (note two exclamation points) and "Attention!!!" (note three)? Does that indicate a FURTHER enhanced call for attention?

Also, I think it's nice that the British High Commission secretaries can conduct their official business from Spain. They need the extra sun, the poor things...

I dunno...for $750,000 USD, I would consider a legal name change to "Chickenboy".

Three is the maximum that a Brit would put in a letter (or email), four exclamation marks is widely considered to be indicative of a diseased mind.

It's good to see that we're keeping the Empire alive, I wonder if the Spanish realise that they're part of the Commonwealth?

Wait a minute! What the heck is this crap! United States Dollars only? When the Euro is worth 50% more (and rising)? Why don't they just say 750,000 pesos and be done with it? Wait a minute, the peso is almost a dime now and it's going up, too. Woof!! I might sniff at it if it was Yuan; I like the picture of young Mao.
