Could have been much, much worse, if the plane had actually crashed into the stands, as the media erroneously claim.

Yep... if there is any consolation that is the one...

I'm already home from the hockey rink this morning and into my 3rd cup of coffee.  Lots of football for background noise on the TV today.  It sure would be nice to have a 2x2 turn to play with.

Hi all,

Don't know what to say...

quote:

Nasa unveils new launcher design for Mars missions

By Telegraph UK

Nasa has unveiled plans for the “most powerful rocket in history” which it hopes will take men to Mars and beyond.

The massive rocket will supersede the space shuttle, which ended its final mission this summer, and will cost around $18 billion (£11bn) to develop over the next six years.

It will have its first unmanned test flight in 2017 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and the first manned flight is expected in 2021

Charles Bolden, the head of Nasa and a former space shuttle pilot, said: “This is a great day for Nasa and the nation. While I was proud to fly in the space shuttle, tomorrow’s explorers will dream of one day walking on Mars.

“President Obama has challenged us to be bold and dream big, and that’s exactly what we do.”

The new rocket, known as the Space Launch System (SLS), is more powerful than the giant Saturn V rockets that launched astronauts to the Moon.

Its initial design would allow it to take 140,000 pounds of cargo into orbit and that could eventually double with later modifications. The space shuttle could carry only about 50,000 pounds.

The extra power will allow Nasa to put into orbit everything it needs to prepare for a mission into deep space and the Red Planet. On top of the rocket will sit the “Orion” capsule which is being developed to carry astronauts.

Mr Obama has called for a human expedition to an asteroid by 2025, and a journey to Mars in the 2030s. But the rocket announcement follows a year long tussle with Congress over the project’s cost and scope, with some estimates putting the eventual bill for the project at $62 billion.

Amid the delays senior astronauts criticised the Obama administration for being too timid. Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, warned America was on a “downhill slide to mediocrity.”

Senator Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, called the new project “a monster rocket”.

He said: “This allows Nasa to get out beyond lower earth orbit and start to explore the heavens, which is the job Nasa has always been tasked to do. In the bosom of America there is a yearning for us to explore.”

In some ways the move marks a return to the technology used nearly half a century ago to get to the Moon, with disposable rockets powered by liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, instead of a reusable space shuttle.

Stanford University professor Scott Hubbard, a former Nasa senior manager, said: “It’s back to the future.”

Nasa is hoping to save money for the project by using private companies to supply the International Space Station and renting seats for astronauts on Russian Soyuz rockets while it concentrates on its longer term goal of reaching Mars.

NASA new space launcher by numbers

By Telegraph UK

NASA unveiled its design selection for the new launcher capable of taking astronauts to Mars. Here is the 'Space Launch System' by numbers:

$10 billion: cost of rocket project through 2017.

$6 billion: cost of Orion deep-space crew capsule.

$2 billion: to be spent refurbishing Nasa's Florida spaceport to accommodate new rocket.

2017: year it is due to have been finished. Also year of first test launch.

2021: first year of manned flights

2025: year Nasa could use it for mission to asteroid.

2030s: estimated first attempt to send astronauts to Mars.

110: tons-worth of payload it will be able to carry at first. 165 tons may be its eventual payload. Space shuttle could haul only 27 tons.

238,856 miles: distance from Earth to Moon

34,796,786 miles: minimum distance from Earth to Mars

An artists conception released by NASA shows the Space Launch System:

Well poo. Can't move the boat off the cradle. The Tami-lift can't raise the stern. Winch just spins and has some kind of broken part. And won't nobody know what till "the mechanics guy" shows up on Monday. Could go over to P'cola anyway and just hang out at the YC, but they don't allow dogs. I could just see Beaudy the deaugy launching himself into the pool and terrorizing some octogenarian gazillionaire dowager ... uhmmm ... temmmptiinng ... but, no .. no, definitely no.

Ok, so pics of Beaudy the deaugy widdling on everything in sight will just have to wait till sometime next week after "the mechanics guy" figures out which kind of parts is the parts that's broke. God help us all if he says "well, this here's what's broke, but I don't know whut the hell it is, or whut the hell it does, I mean, I didn't build the dam thang. You gotta call the Comp'ny in Minnesota."

One of the best songs written this part of the century. Gonna send this to my ex. We both loved this song. Maybe ...

Play it real loud. On a good sound system.

Prolly my favorite my favorite album from my favorite artist. Just a home town Virginia boy, who's one hell of a piano player, with back ups like Pat Metheny, Jerry Garcia, Phil Collins, Bonnie Rait, John McLaughlin Williams, Beverly Baker. Just a home town Virginia boy.
[ed] shoot, and Branford Marsalis. What the heck was I thinking?

Back from Moose country after the tournament. Placed first in forms, second in sparring and third in weapons for my class. I thought it went well.

Interesting trophies-small hand blown glass swords in maple holders with etched text on the blade. Very upper crust for a regional karate tourney.

Lovely drive back from the tourney up north. Decided against the crappy interstate 35 construction and took back roads most of the way home. Leaves are turning up there and the roads waved through quiet small towns, tall pines and lovely farmland. Nice country.

Anyways, I've been essentially working out for 6 hours and then sitting in a car for 3.5. I'm one big cramp. Shower, NSAIDs and bourbon oughta do the trick.
