Well, it appears the end has happened for my company. It was a nice run. Maybe it is time for a good change for me.

Sorry to hear that mate. Good luck on the follow-up contacts...

I'm sure someone will buy sand from them.

I'm hoping to get a cynics pool started. Who's in on a friendly wager for the start of the Libyan civil war? I'll put stakes down for 3 months from today. $10 USD. Anyone else (monthly intervals, please)?

BTW: the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe has started a campaign to retain the 'Fighting Sioux' nikename.

"Nikename"? Hasn't that already been taken?

Got pinged already from a company on monster. I really hope to be able to join the software company we used to use at work. Already know their product and their people, so it would be a good fit. Plus, could probably work from home. Wish me luck.

Good luck, Martian dude!

Back from the brink myself. A full week in Walt Disney World with the wee ones.

Actually, it went well. The kids had a great time and we enjoyed ourselves too. Having their enthusiasm really helps to moderate some of the chintz and cheese factor. My son met a new / old friend there and hit it off like gangbusters. The Disney staff were friendly and helpful. I enjoyed it more this time than when I went with my wife 12 years ago BC (Before Children).

The only OPS loss was a 7 year-old umbrella stroller that my daughter projectile vomited into last night. It contained the digesta quite nicely (she had stood up before doing so), so I quietly folded it up and placed it near a trash receptacle for the very helpful WDW staffers to uncover at their leisure. TRICK-OR-TREAT!

By the way, if you limeys are looking for any of your countrymen that come up missing, you might want to start looking in Central and South Florida. More cockney accents spoken than you could shake a stick at!

Damn am I glad to be back home. Now where's the bourbon?

Story I heard a gazillion years ago; no clue from where or who, but my Israeli friends don't even laugh at it..

A camel and a scorpion are standing at the edge of Suez looking to cross.
Scorpion says, "Hey camel, you can swim. How bout you carry me across?"
Camel says, "No way. You'll sting me and I'll drown."
Scorpion says, "But if I do that, I'll drown too."
Camel says, "That makes sense. Ok, hop on."
About half way across, the scorpion stings the camel. As he's dying and going down;
Camel says, "Why did you do that? Now we'll both die."
Scorpion says, "Because this is the Middle East, stupid."

[ed] ok, so Libya isn't the Middle East, but still ...

Heard one very similar to that. The mea culpa line was "Because it's my nature". Same gist. Sad.

So, are you taking the 'short' side of 3 months then?

I don't think it will happen until elections. Then there will be some sort of corruption incident and a war between east and west will break out.

There's a reason it used to be two countries: Tripolitania and Cyrenaica.

Yeah, way short. Frankly, I think it's already started. At the risk of getting political (and if I am please cut me short, I'll shut up), Libya is majority Sunni, and has a relatively large middle class (as such things go in the Muslim world) that is solidly aligned with the Sunni branch, but has not participated in the insurgency. The insurgents are a minority of the population but perhaps half of them are Shia aligned. As Marx said, it only takes an active 5% to do the nasty. Shia Jihad is a powerful force and motivates its adherents. I think it's already started, but it's just waiting for the CNN cameras to leave before the blood really begins to flow.

Chickenboy and JWE,

You two are just taking an old fashioned, simplistic view. They won't settle scores that way. Instead they will use the "justice" system at the local level to do the other side in. Each local city/tribal area will just put in motion legal system under its local control to try "enemies of the state" or just generic "bad guys".

Sounds like you're taking the 5 month timeline aspect of the bet?

Hi Alfred,

Naw. Not so simplistic as you suspect. There is, will be and always has been THAT form of localized justice. I'm looking for a more widespread unifying civil war for purposes of this bet here. Or are you suggesting that there won't really be one, just insidious low-grade purging?

Afternoon...

Typical - I am shortly off to work and it's the only shift in six weeks that I can almost be sure will be quiet, but I have no turns to sneak in...

So, looks like someone is taking the zero to one month part of this bet? I'll take the other side of that bet. See, it's got to be recognized as a civil war for purposes of bet payout. There won't be recognition of status quo on the ground as it's not interesting enough.

Hi all,

Autumn is here tithe... days are noticeably shorter and colder... it is raining often... and soon there will be frost during the night... I just moved all our flower pots from balcony to staircase for the winter...
