BTW, I'm quite excited at the prospects of AAR's from Ian and John, two folk who know a little about what they're doing, and a lot about how the game was intended to be played.

Oh, Lord. Gone and done it now. Just volunteered for a public game, with AARs, with Brother Elf.

If Ian wants to boogie, I'm surely game, but I never did a public AAR before. Wouldn't mind getting some hints and help. I'm NOT one of those folks who post endless combat results, or daily "nothing happened" crap.

To me, an AAR is a report on what happened (and where and when), why it happened, what was the result from our perspective, what lessons were learned, and what doctrinal changes should be implemented to keep it from happening (or having it happen again) in the future.

I'm just a Mil puke, I'm not really a gamer; so any thoughts on presentation and such, that would appeal to this gaming community, would be most appreciated.

John, I'd really look forward to a game between you and Ian. For me, just why you're doing what you're doing would be fantastic.

Keep your favorite text editor open while you do the turn, making notes as you see fit. Save your style outline on local disk from day to day (date, format, whatever) to make life easier. Add one screen shot per post (I use Greenshot and Paint.net). Only use combat report excerpts that support something in your text, can be more than one on a busy day but never post whole combat reports. In addition to literal AAR, share some plans but not all, using some hindsight instead.

I'll agree with this. I can't be interested in reading pages and pages of copy and paste combat reports. If I want that then I've got a save folder full of them!

I'm planning to throw more maps etc into my AAR when I get my games running again.

Tonight's mental meandering:

Robert Oppenheimer wished to stop development of the Hydrogen bomb because it was too horrible a weapon to bring into the world.

I think the invention of the H-Bomb was a good thing. It WAS a horrible weapon, but it also showed the whole world what a strategic nuclear war would bring.

If development had stopped at "normal" A-Bombs, we might have seen their use in a battlefield situation in Central Europe, since there was some degree of "blindness" among war planners as to the power of nuclear weapons and the damage they could cause to the respective homelands.

Soviet war plans for an attack on Germany called for use of tactical nuclear weapons until Breshnev came along. If nuclear weapons had continued to be thought of as tactical weapons, oversized conventional weapons, the risk of WWIII would have been significantly higher.

Well then, let's have it, sir. Your perspective on what an AAR should be is different from many others. No reason why we shouldn't have the benefit of your point of view and your discussion of same.

True, but well served Artillery does add a modicum of dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl.

Yes Sir. An M-777 doing a night shoot on the range. I was just an old timey 105 puke and that shiznit stuff was just a gleam in my eye. Did get to watch a hard humping 155 battery shoot these things at Ft Irwin, last year.

I do so love the guns. And the guys at Irwin know that very well. So they let me have some peeks every now and then.

Go with maps. Less combat reports. I plan on using numerous maps in our 2x3.

I wonder if he'll understand that he's not welcome if we tell him in languages other than English? How many different languages can we scrape together between us?
