It is rather easy to pick up. A lot of fun to drive.

I learned how to drive stick shift (manual) from friends and just kind of hung on to it as a developed skillset, "just in case". It's been helpful, as I can pick it up again pretty quickly.

I've only owned one manual, a 2001 MR2 Spyder. Loved driving that thing, but it was oh-so impractical. It did have a fine gearshift.

Also, for you flatlanders, it's easy to talk about how fun driving a stick is. Not so much for Seattleites and San Franciscans and people that live on steep hills. I wouldn't want one if I lived in such places still.

I have just always known... not sure when or where I picked it up. Everything at the Coop is manual mainly, some of our farm jazz is, dad and gramps had a manual or two growing up, older brother had a manual Contour, my truck in highschool was a manual S10... I think it is a great skill to always have, and you dont really lose it.

to quote 40 yr old virgin...

"Is it true that if you don't use it, you lose it?"
"Was that a serious question?"
"No..."

I learned how to drive on a stick shift. Old VW Rabbit back in the day....way back in the day. Dad would take me to a big hill in a quiet neighborhood nearby and make me stop, then start on that hill. Did it until there was almost no rollback.

I learned on a Chevy Chevette.  Bought it from a guy at 3:00 one afternoon, and had to use it to get to work by 5:00.

Heh...funny...

Most of my practice was on a VW vannagon that we used on some summer road trips in college. Great way to learn.

I learned on a Tan 1978 Ford Pinto. 4-Speed. We called it "Root Beer" Fun car (and no.....it had the regular rear bumber so did not explode.) Actually that thing ran like a charm once we replaced the entire CAM. The "Professor" (and yes.....he actually was a university professor) we bought it from for $600.00 had litterally not changed the oil in 10 years of owning it. He had simply topped off the oil as it got low. Put 40k miles on the thing in under two years and it never even threatened to break down. Sadly....it's career was cut short after being hit by a stolen Toyoda. I was fine.....after all cars still had metal fenders and steel bumbers back in those days. I liked that car.

Been driving Nissan Sentras ever since..and each one including the present one have all been manual transmission. Thats how i ended up being the designated driver in England during a buddy and mine's trip. He had failed to specify an automatic and we ended up with a manual trans. car. So I had to do some quick learning how to drive shifting with my left hand and driving on the left (aka the WRONG!) side of the road.

Hi all,

quote:

"Green Green Grass Of Home"

The old home town looks the same as I step down from the train,
and there to meet me is my Mama and Papa.
Down the road I look and there runs Mary hair of gold and lips like cherries.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to meet me, arms reaching, smiling sweetly.
It's good to touch the green, green, grass of home.
The old house is still standing, tho' the paint is cracked and dry,
and there's that old oak tree that I used to play on.

Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary, hair of gold and lips like cherries.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to meet me, arms reaching, smiling sweetly.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

[spoken:]

Then I awake and look around me, at the four grey walls that surround me
and I realize, yes, I was only dreaming.
For there's a guard and there's a sad old padre -
arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak.
Again I touch the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree
as they lay me neath the green, green grass of home.

We went to Tom Jones concert last night in Arena Zagreb (around 8000 people)!

His voice and performance is stunning even though he is an elderly gentleman by now...

It was very very very good!!!

That's great to hear! Time and miles take their toll, and many singers' voices suffer. That makes it an extra treat when one of the older greats still has that amazing voice.

bah. woosie. Hills make it even more fun! I've yet to hit anyone's front bumper while starting up from a stop on a hill. And for the downside, being able to downshift saves alot of wear and tear on the brakes.
