I agree with you Steve.
I also don't care what the ships are called, one way or another. I think another user commented on it being a "bad" name, I simply tried to point out that there are "bad" names on all sides.
I name the ships all sorts of things, the only thing they have in common is that the names relates to the area around or before WW2.

I'd like to see A6Ms flying in from the Hibachi. Or, the Nissan. Or the Datsun. Or the Chop Sticks.

Sorry, I'm getting too silly.

I'd love to rename some of the IJN carriers. Alas, that's not possible...

I'd like you to rename some of your carriers too. Hibachi wouldn't be a bad name. Nor would Catastrophe,Flaming wreck, Inferno , big ball of fire, and demolished wreck.

HIJMS Ginsu (for what it's going to do to your fleet)
Katana (see above entry)
Wakizashi (for a CVL )
Samurai
Kendo
Bushido

Lots of good ones to choose from...

Steve, will you be renaming the Enterprise II based upon previous gameplay experiences with this ship? If so, I'd recommend USS *FUEL STORAGE EXPLOSION* II. Gotta put the Roman numerals on this to make sure it's distinguished from the first FUEL STORAGE EXPLOSION ship of a similar name.

How about:

USS SubUr (abbreviated from 'submissive urination')
Pwned
Glass Jaw

All of this is nothing...

Do you know what would be REALLY cool ?

Got your SS painted on PINK:

That would be really cool, and with Cary Grant as skipper and Tony Curtiss as...hummm "guy who achieve things" would be the main SS asset in the Pacific !!!

The pink sub was (sort-of) based on a true event... some sub (i forget which one) had so much of her gray paint knocked off on patrol that her red-lead undercoat shown through quite nicely... the Japanese could see this much better of course, and reported on a "red" or "pink" sub...

i suppose if your sub had non-specific SYS damage that made her a lot more visible to search, you could simulate the same effect... not that i suspect it would make it "the main SS asset in the Pacific"... iirc, the Sea Tiger's main contribution (as a pink sub) was refugee evac, and of course, sinking a truck!

EDIT: There is also a letter sent from Mare Island talking about the need to paint a sub pink due to a lack of enough red lead and white lead paint, but i am uncertain whether or not the plan was actually carried out.

REEDIT: According to another source, the USS Seadragon, which was damaged at Cavite, was temporarily painted pink after repairs and latter painted grey (i am doubtful of this).

According to other sources, it was the Seadragon that had her paint knocked off and the red lead undercoating showed through...

How about the Edmund Fitzgerald? Typhoid Mary - (another type of "carrier")? Similar to the George suggestion, the CV?

I've modded the game a bit to allow for some of the uncompleted and unnamed carriers to be in...and in the editor I did try to stick to the Japanese naming conventions: Mystical flying creatures for carriers (IE Dragon, Phoenix), Provinces for BBs, Mountains for CAs, Rivers for CLs, Environmental or Celestial names for 1st line DDs, and Plants for 2nd line DDs.

Granted, a player has to know this to be able to keep within the conventions...

And after all if you are playing the game...name it what you want to, its your game.

I as well tend to use the names of Carriers that were not completed or the original names of the renamed ships such Reprisal, or Kearsarge.

I support the USS Richard Nixon , not because I favor or support his politics (one way or the other) , but because ships names are "modified" by their crews. How could any male (hetro) sailor not be happy serving on "The Big Dick!"?

Thanks, I just got a situation here - my wifes wants to know why I'm laughing so *cough* hard.

With "modification" in mind, USS Nixon seems preferable to USS William ("Bill") Jefferson Clinton...

Back to the game: How about USS Hirohito - not because he was a great or powerful man, but simply because this ship should be safe from being attacked.

before this thread gets locked....

I'll just say that I like the naming convention of sticking with the names of famous ships. After combing through the lake battles of the Revolution and 1812, and a host of other names including the river gun boats of the Civil War, I came down to the Hartford for Farragut's flag ship, and Olympia for Dewey's.

Of course there are a number of current and recent politicans named Dick, and the Navy is cutting back (laying off lots of sailors, etc). So let's name a patrol boat after one and the crew can call it "The little Dick!".

In fairness , the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard was called by her crew "The Bonnie Dick!".

Hartford, like Oregon , Constellation and Constitution were still museum ships during part of WW2, so nothing was named after them. Oregon was scrapped for the war effort, and Hartford caught fire (not sure when, but I thought it was WW2) . Constellation for a time was Lant fleet flagship.

Or you could get an Abbot and Costello routine going by naming one US Submarine.

Japanese intel analyst: "Sir! US Submarine sighted!"

Officer: "Good work! Which submarine?"

Analyst: "US Submarine"

Officer: "I heard you the first time. Whcih submarine?"

Analyst: "US Submarine"

Officer, drawing sword . . .

Cannot....stop...laughing...stomach...hurts

Thanks for the help. I knew Constellation was still on the list, but didn't know that about the Hartford. I really thought I had that covered. Oh well.

Oriskany
and Reprisal are nice names too.

"Again placed out of commission 20 August 1926, Hartford remained at Charleston until moved to Washington, D.C., on 18 October 1938. On 19 October 1945, she was towed to the Norfolk Navy Yard and classified as a relic. Unfortunately she was allowed to deteriorate and as a result Hartford sank at her berth on 20 November 1956. She proved beyond salvage and was subsequently dismantled."

Here's what I renamed the american carriers during my campaign:

U.S.S. Gettysburg
U.S.S. Chickamauga
U.S.S. Chancellorsville
U.S.S. Spotsylvania Court House
U.S.S. Wilderness
U.S.S. Second Battle of Bull Run
U.S.S. Antietam
U.S.S. Stones River
U.S.S. Shiloh
U.S.S. Fort Donelson

All were battles in the american civil war, I pretty much list the Ships in order of how many casualties the battles have, so U.S.S. Gettysburg would be the first ship etc.

Haven't really thought of what to name the Japanese ships, probably won't ever rename them, but at least honor the american ships. So glad I am not naming any U.S.S. George W. Bush

I'd go with

USS WTF!

or the classic

USS Unsinkable II

although this sounds more like a british carrier.

You can only do it when it's still in Reinforcements queue. If it has already arrived, you cannot change name. Click "Ship Availability" (hotkey 7) and then you can rename CV by clicking it's name.
