What are the best methods to ensure you capture a resource rich objetive with minimal damage.

I attacked Balikpapan last turn in my PBEM vs Herwin.

Got this:

Ground combat at Balikpapan (64,97)

Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 10309 troops, 89 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 343
Defending force 1026 troops, 32 guns, 3 vehicles, Assault Value = 11
Japanese adjusted assault: 295
Allied adjusted defense: 1
Japanese assault odds: 295 to 1 (fort level 2)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Balikpapan !!!
Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), disruption(-), preparation(-), fatigue(-)
morale(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), disruption(-)
Allied ground losses:
491 casualties reported
Squads: 32 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 59 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 10 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 23 (23 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 3 (3 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 3

And the result is:

240(60) and 240(60), a 20% of resources damaged.

What I did

Bomb with KB for 5 days (200 Val and Kates on Ground attack at 8,000 feet)
Bomb with several IJN and IJA bomb sentais (230 the last day, but started with 100) for approx 10 days (first days at 10,000 feet, then IJA lowered until reaching attacks at 100 feet !)

What I did NOT
Use surface forces to bomb Balikpapan, as it had CD+mines a bad combination.

Land unit Preparation: one assault unit at 68, other two at high fifties and several ones at 10 (were used on the assault at Samarinda)

Disruption ( I did march from Samarinda, more or less 20-25%)

What I can do to improve the performance. Next stops are Medan and Palembang, and If I get Palembang at 50% I`m toasted.

What it`s better, a shock attack or a deliberate attack ?

Any tip that things I didn´t do, and are fundamental to ensure a happy ending for those lovely resource grabbing IJ players...

Put simply if you have to fight for a resource center, it will be damaged. The more fighting, the more prepared the defender, the better the defending force, and the more indescriminate types of fighting the worse the damage will be. Sounds like it was a bit of offensive overkill in this instance and not enough recon. That said, it probably would have had damage no matter what you did. As long as you plan to hold that booty maker more than about 75 days, which I think you do, it is worth repairing, assuming the incremental booty is needed across the empire and you have the supply. Thats the really tough decision. Once you have DEI, do you need to repair stuff and if so how much.
