well first off, you have to be assigned at least 1 air formation (in preferences when setting up a game)

then its under misc units titled strike element i believe

cargo aircraft (paradrops) and gliders are also available under misc units, and can be purchased without having air formations assigned (or in addition to the limit)

hope this helps (got me at first too) :)

Another thing to add, you usually can't by them with core unit points, you have to purchase under support points which occurs after your done using all the core points.

And just to add a note that aircaft are only avaliable when the computer decides you have air superiority... which isn't all the time.

For strike aircraft yes, it must be daylight AND clear weather but paradrops and gliders can be purchased for nighttime missions as long as the weather is good.

Actually, what better time to drop paras and gliders than in the dark when visibility is limited.:D

In one recent game I dropped a bunch of paras behind enemy lines at night and he never spotted them at all. They sat just near his VHs in the rear until I saw him pull troops to the front. Gave him a few turns to get well away and then completely overwhelmed all his remaining defending forces in one turn, with zero losses on my side.

Your own aircraft will have a habit of attacking you and you can't shoot back at your own aircraft to make them go away.

PS: Yes this has happened to me a few times. I've changed tact with aircraft now.

I think that if the FO you call an airstrike with has LOS on a target the plane wont hit you own tanks.

You can buy transport units for your core, but IIRC the first battle's weather has to be Clear.
