Alright, so I bought Distant World a while ago, played it a bit and then decided to wait for a few patches. Now I've picked it up again, but I have a couple of questions that I hope someone here can answer.

1) In my current game, I'm playing as humans, and a couple of my early colonizations have been planets inhabited by Securans. Since they breed faster than humans, and since I'd prefer humans to stay the dominant species in my empire, I want to make sure that any future colony ships are built on human planets. Therefore, instead of using the colony planner to order colony ships to be built, I'm just building a bunch on my capital planet. However, I can't order them to colonize, using the colonization planner. They just sit idly in my home system, while the colony planner tells me that there are no free colony ships. What am I doing wrong here?

2) I still don't quite understand research. I know the difference between potential and actual research, but I don't understand what the numbers actually mean. Are they research points per year? Per month?

3) Is there some way to see how many and which trade goods a colony receives? If I mine a luxury good in one colony, can I expect that good to be distributed to all my colonies, or just a few of them?

4) As I understand it, the price of a ship component depends on the galaxy wide price of the resources required for that component. If that's the case, what's the point of mining anything but luxury resources, seeing as how your own supply doesn't influence the price?

Don't be such a racist ;)

Securans are wonderfull "people", and they can colonize desert worlds with basic colonization tech. If you restrict yourself to Humans you wont be able to colonize desert worlds until level 3 or 4 colonization tech-level. So send the securans to the crappy desert worlds, and send the humans to the rare but high quality continental worlds.

You can check what cargo the colony has and who "owns" that cargo. If the good reaches your colony it should be in to cargo and have your flag. Otherwise I don't know other than tracking all freighters.

Make sure the colony ships don't have some other order/mission by looking at them in the ship screen (select colony ships). You might have to take them off Auto as well. Another thing that might be happening is that you may not be able to colonize the world type with humans....but I am not sure about that....never paid attention. For example, if the only potential worlds to colonize are desert worlds and just have human colony ships they may not show up as available.

The price of ships and bases does rise considerably if there are shortages of strategic materials. In addition, the build will be slower if you don't have the materials readily available. Your supply of the materials does seem to make a difference and in any event are part of the galactic supply.

Not sure on the research...more is better up to your cap...:)

All goods distribution is done automatically. Demands are created and things are automatically moved by Private Transport. The entire economy will be more efficient if you have ample fuel available near or on key trade routes.

This is correct.

Even if you have the Colonization Tech, unless the Colony ship is equipped with that Tech you will be unable to Colonize harsher planets.

Idle Colony ships will only show up in the planner if they are able to colonize whatever type of planet you currently have highlighted.

Yeah, that's what happened. I hadn't noticed that only desert planets were available for colonization.

I really like this game, but I wish it provided a bit more information on my empire. A detailed ledger sort of thing would be very useful.

I actually found the game quite refreshing without the detailed colony and base income and efficiency ledger. I have found that as an overall empire leader if you make good decisions on how you will expand and build in an overall sense, the private sector does manage things quite well.

- Design efficient ships and bases

- Understand what your empire needs most by reviewing the Expansion Planner and build your mining bases at places that maximize resources....more types of resources per object with higher percentages are the best.

- Ensure you have ample refueling points on your trade routes and in your colony systems if possible. Fuel availability seems to have a pretty big impact on overall efficiency

- Grab independent colonies as soon as you can and make sure you have efficient routes

- Setup your military so they can respond quickly and efficiently to pirates and space monsters that will disrupt the private sectors efforts.

Anyway, I too initially found the lack of all that individual detail a bit 'different' than what I am used to with this type of game. But after some time with it, I love how it plays and really lets you focus on the big picture.
