Status: offline 		If I dedicate an air group to 100% training, do I need each pilot in an actual airframe to improve his skills or will they go up regardless of whether or not there are aircraft to be flown?

Also, even if they learn while training on the ground, would they learn faster if they did have aircraft to fly?

Status: offline 		The more planes a unit has, the faster they train I believe (up to unit limits).  The training routine assumes that pilots on training spend part of their time in ground training exercises.

Excellent! So you do indeed get a slight reward in training if you can provide airframes for your pilots. Which means it's up to the player to determine whether or not the cost in aircraft is worth the additional skill increases.

I'm not even sure its that slight, the extreme shortage of bombers the Allies have means I got quite a few squadrons with 1 B17 in them training 10 pilots. Really, it's almost not worth the bother, they hardly train at all.

You definitely need trainers. The highly trained RAAF bomber crews, who had the Wirraway to train in, are proof of that working!

You should have a fair batch of (what are they called...) B-18's (?) that you can equip state-side squadrons with for training.

Status: offline 		Common sense would say more planes would equal quicker training, but I have some units which train "ok" with few planes, and other units with a personal plane for each pilot and they don't seem to train much at all, and each with leadership of like skill sets.  I think there is some factor I am missing, maybe location, support, command HQ, but not sure exactly what it is, as I keep fiddling around with things trying to "de-code" the best way to train pilots.  I don't think is should be that hard.  I wish the manual would just say to train the most pilots you should do XYand Z.

Status: offline 		I have noticed that squadrons without pilots will train but slower-especially slow is general experience gain as it seems you actually have to get them into aircraft to gain much experience. Still, better than nothing so train away.

I find if very difficult to train up bomber pilots as the Allies. Just never enough spare aircraft. I consider myself lucky if I can send 45 exp pilots to the front line units with maybe 60 in bombing skills.

Status: offline 		The unit leader also contributes to training.  A commander with a high Inspiration value will train pilots faster than one with a low Inspiration.  Having experienced pilots in a squadron helps too. 

You won't be able to do this at the start, but once you have a lot of experienced front line pilots, move some into dedicated training units and the pilots will train faster.
