A new idea came to me today. No idea why I never thought of this before. I need to make like a star base, but I want to put it on a gas giant so it can mine and harvest the resources on the planet.

So can I make a star base, to mine the gas, or do I need to make a gas mine, but make it bigger with construction facilities on it as well as labs and other stuff.

Yeah you can make a starbase with resource extractors and it will work. You can only place it if the resource target does not already have a private mining base. The option to build any base with resource extractors is not there if there is already a private base. You can place multiple starbases at the same planet. You can then place a private mining base in addition to those. They will all extract materials and freighters will transport them. But, I am not sure if this is intended functionality or an exploit so it may cause issues.

The starbase will be paid for by the state rather than the private economy. Beyond that I am not sure if there are any differences, such is in how resources are accounted for.

Thanks Aures for the explanation. Right now, there is nothing in the system. I wanted this to be the first building in the system.

No problem.

If you read between the lines you will note you can get a basically unlimited resource extraction rate from one source. It is one of the reasons it is sort of exploitish. One source of a luxury can supply the entire galaxies demand if you put a bunch of size 4500 starbases on it rather than a colony or a mine (btw a size 4500 mine can extract resources much faster than a colony).

Although I have tested this I haven't tried playing a game using this strategy. Let us know how it goes. Ideally I would like to start a new game and resolve not to use any private mining bases to see how that affects things. Provided it doesn't cause issues, it may be worth setting up the highest quality resources as giant state runs groups of starbases.

Another hybrid that works quite well is making a resort base with a mining engine, luxury mining engine, or gas mining engine. Not only do you get resort income, but it is productive.

It's a lot like taking a vacation in a gold prospecting park...

Yes it works for any category of base. Starbases just have no restrictions. A resort base has required components but as you point out they are beneficial. You could also build a monitoring station, research station or defensive base with extraction components.

I haven't tested whether you can fit more than one base on an asteroid, but a resort base/gold mine doesn't sound like a bad idea even if you can't.

One tactic I have used in a game is sort of the reverse. Put long range sensors on my mining bases and let the private sector take care of my galactic sensor net.

On the subject of the different mining engines, my default gas mining ships and bases have luxury extractors on them. Seems like those are only useful when mining ice planets. I have started splitting up my base designs into mine, mine + luxury, luxury, gas and gas + luxury designs to make the most of different resource types. Shame there is no way I can design different ships for gas vs gas + luxury and have them focus on the appropriate resources. All my gas mining ships lose the luxury extractor and get an extra gas extractor. I am still playing around with whether having dedicated mining and luxury ships works and is better than having mixed ones.

Aures, I dont think that having that many variations is that great of a benefit. The construction and upkeep costs for the extraneous extractor are pretty miniscule. Its not really worth the micromanagement. The only base that I fiddle a ton with is the "Small Space Port". I strip off the junk (like research components), and only use the minimum components so that I can support a robust trade network early on...

Well if you are queueing up construction ships to resource targets it doesn't really matter how many types you have. If you double the number of gas extractors by stripping off luxury extractors you can get twice the gas from the same gas cloud. Otherwise you would have to control 2 gas clouds of the same quality to get those resources.

I am not really worried about the upkeep costs, my private sector usually has stacks of cash. But when you are talking size 4500 stations I do feel better knowing there aren't 50 luxury extractors sitting there doing nothing at every mine.

Conversely for the rarer luxuries I would much rather increase the amount I can get from a single source than also get some strategic resource I can find anywhere. The only limitation is you have to have at least one mining engine. But as you point out, the cost for the extra extractor is miniscule and at least there are usually some resources for it to extract.

can you build mining systems on a starbase orbiting a colonized world, and will it extract?

Yes you can, no it won't. Sorry, there is no way that I know of to increase the resource extraction rate at a colony.

The only reason I do the Resort extractors is that I get both the resource and the resort benefit...so it remains profitable. Other than the resort hybrids and a starbase/gas miner for a refueling station, I do no other hybrids...only bases that I control the building of get hybrid status.

Ah the Resort extractors, reminds me of Bespin in Empire Strikes Back. The Starbase/miner reminds me of Terrok Noir, or before it was Deeps Space 9.
