Messages to Imperial General HQ, January 24th 1942:

From: LGEN Imamura, 16th Army, Kendari

Emperor,
Here are our plans for the invasion of Java. It will consists of two independent invasions. One in the Batavia area and one near Soerabaja. The exact landingzones are not yet assigned. We will wait for last minute recon data. The invasions near Batavia should take place early February and the first units are already embarking. However, the 21st Division has to come from Shanghai. These units will most likely arrive in a second wave. The operations in the Soerabaja area will start later as first we want to take Merauki and install an air force base there from which we can strike Horn Island. For these operations we need both our surface and air support from our warships in the area. Moreover Ambon will be taken first to support the units at Merauke. Our units will depart and be supported from our bases in the area (encircled in red).

We escaped a disaster today. An American submarine launched his torpedoes at our carriers today. Luckily they were duds.....

That would have been a blow if you had lost the Akagi.  Excellent AAR!

Thanks!

Losing the Akagi would have been bad indeed. Even a single torpedo hit would have been very bad. There are a lot of friendly bases around, but large ports where one could savely retreat the Akagi to are still pretty remote.

Imperial General Headquarters is very dissapointed with the progress that you have made so far. The occupation of Malaya is far behind scedule. Several units have been pinned down at Temerloh for several days now and the main force has not even made it to Kuala Lumpur yet. You are taken off your command taking effect immediately. LGEN Yaheita Saito will replace you.

Yes it is.  It is very enjoyable and educational to say the least.

@dennishe-I noticed you play with the map hexes turned off.  I like the look of the map.  May have to try that myself.  Do you find it difficult to figure distances for your forces with the hex sides turned off?

No, it is very easy. When you select a TF and send it somewhere you see the hexes it is going to take. Try it. It looks so much better.

We have sunk an AG near Batavia. Besides this there is very little resistance and the invasion of Java is proceeding very smoothly.

====================================================

From: VADM Nagumo, 1st carrier strike force, near Horn Island aboard Zuikaku

Emperor,
We have returned from replenishment and attacked Horn Island. We have sunk an TK and an AM. Moreover we have attacked their air base. Horn Island should be neutralized readily.

====================================================

From: ADM Yamamoto, Combined Fleet, Kure

Emperor,
The situation at Horn Island is worrying (Note that the Allies have 18+ units garthered here). We cannot allow the Allies to have controll over the waters between Australia and New Guinea. This would allow them to have easy access to Dutch East Indies, whose resources and oil are extremely important for our economy. Building up airbases in the area and neutralizing Horn Island from there may not be sufficient as the Australians are also building bases in the area. We have to push the Allies further or have to take Horn Island. Moreover, we have to consider the possibility that the Allies have more of these type of surpises for us. In the meanwhile some of our submarine commanders are doing very well. Here are their claimed results:

I-1 - LCDR Kitano, AV Wright & AV Curtis
I-4 - LCDR Nakagawa - AK Clevedon, AK Dorothy Philips, AK Barbara Olson & AK Trento
I-9 - CDR Ishikawa - AP President Coolidge
I-10 - CDR Kayabara - AK Suva
I-15 - CDR Ishikawa - AKL Vichy, AKL Elcano, AP Marella & AP Poelan Bras

Messages to Imperial General HQ, February 13th 1942:

From: VADM Kusaka, Southeast Area Fleet, aboard AK Sensan Maru, unloading at Rabaul

Emperor,
The situation at Horn Island is worrying. Their fighter cap is increasing in strength and our losses are increasing. We cannot ignore the problem as Horn Island will be a perfect starting point for the Allies to start an offensive due west giving them direct acces to the Dutch East Indies that we are currently taking (red line = current situation, yellow line = expected situation within one month). We cannot afford to loose these valuable areas. We therefore will fortify the region in the West of the Coral Sea (orange). Much better would be to neutralize this Allied treath. We are considering a few options:

A. Attack Horn Island with full force and take the base. This would require a lot of troops and heavy losses are anticipated. Moreover the Allies are also building up bases in the Northeast of Australia. We can also take these bases, but it will be extremely difficult to defend them.

B. Take the northeast of Australia including Darwin. In case of an Allied attack from Horn Island to the West they will no longer have a strong flank from which they can support their actions. Also this approach may be very costly, especially if Allied reinforcements have been brought to the area.

C. Destabilize the Allied front by cutting them off from the United States. There is no way the Allies can launch major offensives from the Horn Island Area if we can stop any form of reinforcements to the area. Taking these areas is do-able as long we do it fast and soon. Problem will be that these areas will be really difficult to defend. We will probably also have to take the Fiji area as a buffer (D).

Emperor,
What are your suggestions?

We suggest C and D options. Invading Northern Australia is very difficult because our navy cant suppress allied ground reinforcments. The most wanted situation for Kido Butai is to counter attack main US amphibious operation. They will be attack, defending or retaking their naval supply lines ...
So go ahead :)

To finalize our campaign in the Solomon Islands, our troops landed at Munda and Tulagi. We will leave the other bases for what they are for now and will move on deeper into the Pacific. The abandoned Allied bases will be neutralized and fortified at a later stage.
