This is a Scenario 28 V04 (Da Big Babes) 1x1 PBM between myself, witpqs, and fellow forum member vicberg. I hope you will find it entertaining at least. Vic, alas, will have to wait until the end of the contest, but such is the fate of opponents in AAR's. This AAR will contain some information subject to opsec, loose lips sink ships!

Comments welcome. Settings and house rules are attached to this post, next post will report on turn 1.

In the early morning hours of the mid-Pacific, an explosion racked the BB USS Pennsylvania. Sailors on watch reported seeing a shadow 300 yards off the beam prior to the blast.

Dawn has broken. As a damage control crew works on patching the wound, a short, wiry man wearing a beard and unkempt hair finishes taking measurements read though his wire-rimmed spectacles. He stands back and begins furiously figuring from his notes, flipping the pages of his hand held notebook - stenciled "OSHA" on the cover - like a man possessed. He stops, then looks at the Chief in charge of the work party.

Screwing his face into a contemptuous scowl and pitching his voice in a combination of disdain and mockery he screeches "THIS was no boating accident!"

The Chief contains himself long enough to notice the Captain in his peripheral vision. The Captain points toward the man-from-the-agency-that-does-not-yet-exist, then points toward the water. The Chief smiles.

Many hexes away, er, miles away, the skipper of USS S-38 sleeps fitfully until the XO shakes him awake. Pennsylvania has been torpedoed! As the skipper reaches the control room, sonar announces a contact. Shallows have distorted the sound until the contact is nearly upon them. The scope is raised as torpedoes are readied. The skipper can't believe his eyes - an IJN aircraft carrier! Soryu class by the look of her. All forward tubes fire. Wait, wait, wait... Two tremendous explosions! S-38 evades reprisal and finds the stricken Soryu again. Two more torpedoes find their target! S-38 has avenged Pennsylvania.

Bathed in sweat, the skipper of S-38 wakes to find the XO shaking him urgently. "Captain, the Pennsylvania has been torpedoed inside Pearl Harbor. Captain, we're at war!" As he enters the control room, sonar announces a contact. The skipper is overcome by an intense feeling of deja vu. The scope is raised as torpedoes are readied. As he looks through the rising scope the skipper can't believe his eyes. "Where's the carrier?" Transports move away in the distance as angry escorts rush straight for the would-be avenger...

Pennsylvania sustained only modest damage. This business of no Pearl Harbor attack is new to me. I have 7 BB's at PH that will get 1/42 upgrades, but usually those are tacked onto about a year's worth of repairs. BB Pennsylvania will head to the west coast with the others and receive repairs and upgrade at the same time.

The attack on Manila was devastating, but ironically a bit less lethal than the first start where Soryu's planes were unavailable. 20 subs were sunk outright and others damaged. Two escaped harm and are proceeding on war patrol.

Large air strikes hit Manila, Hong Kong, Georgetown, and Kuantan with great carnage at all. Invasions are ashore (or in one case from the air) at Kota Bharu, Vigan, Laong, Aparri, Jolo, and Cagayan. That last one hurts, as one B-17 group will likely be lost when the base falls tomorrow.

The thrusts in the southern Philippines are of most concern. With KB in theater, the eastern DEI will likely be an almost immediate target.

The War Rages in the Orient A second day of strikes on Manila adds mayhem on top of devastation. A small KB made an appearance SE of Mindanao, attacking fleeing noncombatants. Guess that word is obsolete. Ungarrisoned Jolo fell today. Cagayan resisted, but the hordes rolled the defenders out into the jungle. Kota Bharu busted too. Where's the Royal Navy?

Unlikely Hero xAKL Cetus - little Cetus the sea monster - went head to head with another sea monster in the biggest battle since Godzilla vs King Kong. Three times during the night - three times - she attacked the enemy's main KB, scattering escorts and setting mighty carriers to flight (but not the kind they're used to). DD Shiranui and CA Tone felt the mighty mite's wrath on the second pass. Alas, the third time was too many. The whale sleeps with the fishes.

Enemy KB Crushed! So says the War Department. Fresh from its ordeal with fierce Cetus, the KB was set upon from the air. A full squadron of navy SOC-1 Seagulls heavily escorted by army fighters swooped in through the clouds. The surviving Seagull pilot could only say "Carnage!" The War Dept. announced that intelligence analysts have determined the IJN KB must have been badly mauled and is no longer an effective fighting force. This reporter has doubts.

Mysteries Collide Where is the Royal Navy? Where is the IJN deploying its submarines? Two mysteries solved at one time. Just south of the western end of Borneo, the Royal Navy engages in a running battle with IJN submarines. The RN lashes out first with it practiced ASW, but counter attacks from beneath the waves are the blows that land. Repulse is savaged by 5 torpedo hits.

Elimination Duty Throughout the Philippines and the northern DEI all manor of Allied vessels are felled by submarines, warships, and air attacks. There is even a carrier staked out east way into the Philippine Sea playing goal tender.

Portents The KB has been sighted near Davao. Meanwhile enemy LBA seems to be ready at Jolo and Cagayan. Pray for rain.

5 torps?

I am guessing from the lack of a report otherwise that the Repulse survived.

The Roundup Repulse crawls for safety but only a hex at a time. The destruction of the merchant fleet and support train continues as individual ships flee. At least one enemy sub has penetrated the Sunda Strait, but she'll run out of torpedoes before she runs out of targets. KB lingers SW of Davao, taking target practice but perhaps also guarding the surface forces hunting in the Sulu Sea. Enemy air pounds troops retreating to fortress Singapore. Clark and Manila air bases are virtually shut down. An enemy sub's radio beacon was being tracked headed for the west coast, but contact is lost. All ships are alerted.

Small Boats Win Big Victory Enemy ships unloading at Laoag are set upon in the dark of night by a quartet of deadly mosquito boats. The transports and their lone escort are caught practically at anchor. Four torpedoes strike home, sinking the escort and a transport and leaving another sure to sink. The mighty mites then move in and rake the columns with auto cannon fire, managing to set ablaze two more of the Empire's invasion bringers.

Monotonous Mayhem The submarine Sunda Shooting Gallery is open for business, while the South China Sea sees battleship big gun practice on anything that happens by. Repulse is moving at rowboat speed toward its fate. KB is south of Jolo guarding the foxes as they raid the chicken coup. Tandjoengselor - a small town 40 miles distant from Tarakan - is invaded and will serve as a springboard toward that oil center. Hong Kong is fully invested and must soon feel the force of ground attacks. Rumors of maneuvers and battles inland in China. Nothing concrete, but more IJ steamrolling.

Alas, Alor Star The boys in Alor Star have been cut off but good. Enemy units moving faster from Patani, aided by air strikes on the good guys, have blocked the road.

Imperial Lake The KB dances in the Celebes Sea while invasion forces move to and fro.

Philippine Squeeze The enemy moves down Luzon in force. Meanwhile, paratroopers land ahead of the main body, seizing Cabanatuan. Clark Field is non-operational, but most ground forces have made the haven. Forts will remain at level 1 as teaspoons for digging were left in Manila.

Subs Sally The IJN subs continue their work but activity levels were lower. They must be going back for reloads. A Dutch sub scored on an xAK. Keep hunting - there are more.

The Roundup Georgetown fortress fought ferociously, finally fell. Hong Kong has withstood the enemy's assault, but maybe for the last time. Menado invaded! Highly skilled (36) Dutch jungle fighters are on scene. They'll hold. Rumors of bloody fighting at Ichang with Chinese attackers taking far more casualties than the occupiers. Still, forts are destroyed and the boys feel good. Tomorrow is the day. The enemy advance on Luzon continues, but the lost battalion of Bayombong will try to delay them. In five more days another division forms at Manila - that'll turn the tide. The big news today is from Rangoon, where Oscar and Sally came to visit. Oscar went home but Sally stayed. AVG/1st and 67 RAF were very persuasive. Repulse still floats on the tide, too massive for its tiny escorts to pull any faster. Maybe the enemy thinks she sunk already? Remember - loose lips, sink ships - hush, hush.

Ichang Interrupted The boys got smoked at Ichang. The IJA threw all the air it had at them and disrupted the attack fiercely. Casualties were near even but our guys need a rest. Bringing in some reinforcements too, then on with deliberate assaults.

The Fallen Guam, Bayombong, Lingayen, and Manado make up the list for today. The lost battalion is dancing behind the lines, but Luzon is kinda small.

NSJ The Celebes Sea has been renamed the New Sea of Japan. At least 6 large enemy task forces present or entering the newly proprietary body of water, and a large radio source is coming down from the Sulu Sea. The KB has already purchased real estate, so what is it? Godzilla?

Fortress HK Hong Kong holds another day. Surely that's more than we could ask.

Weathered In The Celebes Sea Celebrities have mostly vanished in the mist. Radio traffic fixes the KB near the entrance to the Makassar Strait. You know - the Dutch sub playground.

Hong Kong Holds I never get tired of hearing that! Rumor is the invaders have called for reinforcements.

Alor Star Lucky Star? The IJA has invested Alor Star, where our boys are cut off. They mean to do them in.

How do you know that is the KB in the Celebes? Does your sigint say there are carriers there, or just "heavy radio transmissions?"

They have been there - confirmed by sightings up through the previous turn - and this turn when most TF sightings in the CS disappeared (seemingly due to weather) there is a heavy radio source where I noted. Their location is not a certainty, but a reasonable likelihood. Other places they could have sprinted to without being detected are either less interesting or non-threatening in the immediate term. They could even still be in the CS but in a different locale, with the heavy radio source being the Godzilla-like radio source detected a turn earlier.

The enemy seem to have their eye on Balikpapan, giving it heavy air raids despite the continuing absence of planes and ships there. Two search groups are still operating from forward bases in the far-eastern DEI, and so far no sign of an incursion toward Ambon and/or Kendari. Tarakan is threatened by the forces marching from the adjacent base, so Balikpapan might well be next, although the same could be said for Ambon and Kendari after Menado's fall. No concrete information, though.

IJN CL Natori received a Dutch treat. Maybe some good reef diving someday. USS Sculpin received some sub on sub action in retaliation. That wreck might never be found. Hong Kong holds! I love saying that. Repulse floats, but who knows for how long?

The Big News of the Day is really big, Godzilla big. Was it radioactive or radio source? It was radio source. With that many radiating antennae only 100 miles from Balikpapan, residents are hiding in their basements and wearing sunglasses. There are so many ships that Dutch submarine KX couldn't count them all. KB might be there, might not. The target could be Balikpapan, but with that much firepower maybe it's a run right at Java.

The Imperial steamroller continues in China. Reinforcements have begun arriving at Ichang to wipe out the nest, but one corps forded the river in the wrong place. Hong Kong holds! The defenders are declining, but at least they're burning supplies.

Malaya
Defenders at Alor Star hang on, but they are being seriously weakened. How long can they go... IJA forces march down the peninsula faster than the beleaguered defenders. Ships are studiously staying out of range of Singapore air attacks.

Exodus
Repulse floats. The proximity of large IJN forces prompts a course change. Batavia will be bypassed. Almost all large vessels have cleared the major danger zone, many bringing fuel with them. Those that couldn't loyally carried fuel cargo to Davy Jones lair.

Philippines
Many, many IJA units. Intel is unable to get a handle on troop counts, but the number of units indicates the enemy plans to make short work of this bulwark. A fresh new PA division has activated in Manila and will rush to Clark.

BND
The Big News of the Day is Target Balikpapan. The Godzilla radio source has revealed itself to be mere ships and men of the Empire. The good news is that the invasion was utterly and completely repulsed by the men and boats of the Royal Navy's MTB squadron ex-Hong Kong. On a moonless night the Imperial Navy sent in a force of battleships, wisely led by a mine-sweeping detail. As it entered the minefield DMS W-4 (such a poetic name) was set upon and both torpedoed and raked by auto-cannon fire. In the exchange one MTB was lost and others damaged. They withdrew in the knowledge that Balikpapan has been saved from invasion. During the enemy's own withdrawal DD Shiratsuyu struck a mine and is believed sinking. See the action report below and a graphic of the enemy dispositions.

Alor Star fell today. Defying orders to retire to the jungle and continue guerrilla warfare, all four Allied units surrendered.

Penguin's Warm Greeting
Crowds have begun lining the docks already at Pearl Harbor as mine sweeper USS Penguin is expected to arrive shortly after sunrise tomorrow. She has journeyed from the icy enemy waters of Guam.

Borneo
Samarinda was invaded today. Balikpapan, as promised, is free from invasion. The MTB's of Commodore Hornblower's squadron were chased about by that same battleship TF - clearly bent on revenge - and found themselves blocking an invasion TF foolishly making for Balikpapan (don't they know it's invasion proof?). The invaders backed off, and one of their PB's fed a waiting submarine. Way to go, boys!

The concentration of IJN fleet assets is great, although radio sources are heard at Babeldoab and Truk.

Ocean Island falls. Faced with taking to rafts in the vast expanses of the central Pacific, the survivors surrendered. The saga of Hornblower's MTB squadron continue as another four of their number are culled. The three remaining boats have too little fuel to reach the nearest base, Banjarmasin, but they'll try anyway. The sharks of steel continue to feed as another IJN xAKL vanishes. The pursuit continues down the peninsula toward Singapore. Enemy ships have still ventured nowhere near the air might of that impregnable British fortress. Speaking of which, Hong Kong more than held today. The defenders dished out more punishment than they took. It's clear now that Hong Kong will never fall, just as Balikpapan will never be invaded.

Anonymous sources at the War Department have provided this decrypted intercept of an enemy communication concerning the pounding that enemy naval forces are taking in the Makassar Strait off of Balikpapan:

Enemy troops are seen emerging from the jungle near Moulmein. The Allied forces arriving from the south are late and will not be in position if the enemy attacks at once.

Hornblower Harried
The saga of the MTB's sees the rowing survivors within 40 miles of Banjermasin.

Dutch Treats
Dutch sharks munch on xAK's Ikuta Maru and Lisbon Maru. A rare Imperial press release was quoted in Swiss newspapers:

Rumors about the huge IJN fleet off Balikpapan have exploded into land exploits with the massive bombardments of shore installations and fortifications. Minister of Information Balikpapan Bob has issued a statement saying "There is no invasion. Those were merely pre-invasion activities." When asked about reports that there were elements of more than a dozen enemy units surrounding the airport, he replied "Those are all lies. There are no enemy forces at all in Balikpapan. I have to go now. I really have to go now."

This day saw the fall of Kuala Lumpur, mighty Hong Kong, Loyang, Chusien, and Balikpapan (Bob was last seen boarding a plane bound for Aruba). Loyang fell to a crushing enemy blow before the defenders could withdraw in orderly fashion. Now they are withdrawing from Chengchow, hopefully ahead of the IJA juggernaut.

Unfallen
Ternate and Moulein remain - most temporarily - in Allied hands. Ternate is undefended yet, inexplicably, 4,000 enemy soldiers landed and stopped outside the city limits. Perhaps the ferocious (but ineffective) air attacks against their ships distracted them. The enemy also paused at moulmein for reasons unknown. The assigned battalion will be there in battle deployment tomorrow, but half their number are ravaged with jungle rot.

Ichang
The attack on Ichang was a success and has weakened the occupying forces. The boys try again tomorrow.

Rangoon
Sally and Oscar returned and Sally stayed the night. Oscar fought for her honor this time, and blood was let on both sides. But Sally fell.

Plain Revenge on the Plains
The bloodbath at Loyang has been avenged on the plains midway between Sinyang and Hwainan, at grid coordinates 87,49. There elements of the Chinese National Army had been chased and retreated, where they linked up with friends. Three Chinese corps, under command of a group army, made a stand against the IJA's 116th Division and 138th Infantry Regiment. Yesterday the IJA shock attacked and got worse than they gave. The defenders, being in good shape, planned their own shock attack for today.

The IJA shock attacked again, perhaps falling prey to misinformation spread about in brothels throughout the region. Their attack went badly enough, but the day was young. A determined Chinese shock attack shattered the enemy front and routed them. The commanders report of the days events follows.

The Unfallen Part Ways
Ternate was occupied by the Empire today. Miraculously, Moulmein withstood an IJA shock attack. The green defenders - now experience 20 after today's battle - held the line even as they were driven from their foxholes.

Ichang
Chinese troops at Ichang also drove the enemy from their foxholes and moved closer to liberating that city. One more attack and then the troops will rest, although that one more might be enough.

Shark News
xAK Monji Maru became the latest food for the steel beasts. In somber news, USN SS Pike failed to make Soerabaja. She will possibly be the last victim to succumb to wounds sustained in the Manila Massacre. Two more Dutch subs have finished provisioning at Soerabaja and are deploying to feast in the Makassar Straits.

Soerabaja Raided!
Soerabaja itself was raided by carrier planes. Over a hundred Vals and more than 140 Kates were accompanied by nimble Zero fighters. Java's defenses gave good account and downed a number of enemy, but the airfield is heavily damaged. Sources indicate that the raid must have flown a great distance from the general vicinity of Balikpapan.

The Roundup
Moulmein and Chengchow fell today. Chengchow's fall was a costly affair, with hundreds of squads destroyed. The host is redeploying to Nanyang to recover and also be in position to fall back on Sian. The Ichang attack achieved 2 to 1 odds but the enemy had rebuilt fortifications. Again they were overcome, but this time the attack was more bloody for our side. Another enemy unit is observed moving to reinforce, so tomorrow the troops will shock attack despite needing a day of recovery. Keep your fingers crossed. Again today the KB sent its spear into Soerabaja. The base faired well, but remains a mess with about half of all facilities damaged. Today's bombing was carried out by Kates only, and again some of the elite raiders were brought down. More fighters have been brought in to make the enemy's task even tougher if they come back. But where will the KB go next? They are close enough to several passages into the Indian ocean so that possibility must be considered. See satellite view below (this publication is ahead of its time):

Ichang Liberated!!!
It was a bloody affair for both sides but the final day was twice as bloody for the invaders. They were sent into full retreat. Intel reports enemy units still advancing on Ichang and, ominously, movement northward of enemy formations east of Changsha. For now we celebrate.

West Coast Threatened!
IJN submarine I-7 made its presence off the west coast of North America known by torpedoing a tanker - thankfully empty - in the general vicinity of Eureka. Escorts engaged in a cat and mouse game with I-7 all through the last 24 hours. The tanker should make port if unmolested. An ASW group has been formed and dispatched to the scene.

Soerabaja's Saga
The small but loyal harbor defense motor launches from Soerabaja were stationed at Pamekasan when a powerful IJN surface fleet roared in. Battleships, heavy cruisers, and other warships made short work of the defenders, even through the blazing .50 cals.

Air raids against Soerabaja continued, this time kicked off by land based air out of Balikpapan. Bob could not be reached for comment. The raid did little but leave IJ wreckage behind. A subsequent follow up raid from the KB did only a little better. The battle was very two-sided this time, with planes from both sides falling from the sky. Significantly, there were numerous sorties organized into many small raids made against the enemy fleet at Pamekasan. While most bombs fell into the sea, one bomb was seen to hit CL Isuzu.

Strangely, the KB also took up station at Pamekasan, perhaps to provide air cover for the surface element. Knowing the difficulty for fleet carriers to maintain a strong CAP in restricted waters, Intel believes the EFC judged the risks to be minimal or perhaps was even taunting ABDA.

The Royal Navy's First Withdrawal
Commodore Hornblower's surviving boats went into overhaul at Soerabaja today. The man himself was promoted to the rank of rear admiral and withdrawn to the Atlantic.
