I have a factory researching the Ki-49-IIa Helen and I want it to continue researching the next variant the Ki-49-IIb. Do I need to set the factory to Keep or Upgrade in order for this to happen?

So far they keep converting to production factories which isn't what I want to happen.

If the research factory if fullly repaired the best thing to do is upgrade it manually to the next variant the Ki-49-IIb by the end of the month before the Ki-49-IIa is due and you will get a fully repaired Ki-49-IIb research factory ready to go.
