Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Since that game, I've never enjoyed another FPS as much.

It's a bit old now and I think I had to do something to get it work with Windows 7 64bit.

You know what, that sounds like exactly what I'd like to play!

I'm still a 32 bit XP kinda guy. Am I golden or what?

Hey is that a Steam only game? I tend to do most of my purchases on either Gamersgate or here at Matrix these days.

Looks like the Mass Effect Bundle might snag me (Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2).

ADDIT: Actually belay that. I just noticed its an EA game and seems to include DRM :( Gaming is dying as far as I can tell.

Play free demos of those games you're remotely interested in, but suspect they won't last for long on your hard disk and hence are not worth the money.

/edit: I did that with Mass Effect 2 and hated the game from the get-go. It's just running from point a to point b to trigger a script. No freedom, no real rpg mechanics, no thinking.

No suggestions Lutzow?

You sound like you're prophecizing the end of Anthropoid the gamer!?

Lol, I just edited my post about Mass Effect.

One game I recently had fun with was Fallout New Vegas, but it's Steamware as well.

Argh! PUKE! Thanks for the warning on that.

*sigh* I really enjoyed Fallout3, and am thinking about ordering the "Complete" collection so I can play the DLCs. Never did finish the main map, but played it so much . . . I think I probably need to wait a year or so longer before I go back and play it again. It was a lot of fun with some mods to add a bit more realism.

So sad that Steam is taking over. I just cannot abide the idea of that crap on my machine.

Right now, Crown of Glory EE. It is really a cool game-especially if you allow yourself to hate your opponent (only temporarily, of course)

By pouring your intellect into achieving righteous retribution against your "enemies" you can attain a wonderful feeling of contentment. Just getting slapped around is not very entertaining (for most).

My favorite game will be different in a month or two. Whatever it may be, it will have to have a good multi player function. Its not as much fun hating just an ai.

If you enjoyed the former, you might love the latter. Obsidian introduced an old-school mode (called 'hardcore' mode), where one needs to eat/drink/sleep, a real faction system and pimped the graphics a bit. In summary this makes New Vegas more fallout-like than F3 ever was. Only downside are occassional ctd's.

Same here, I do my only online buying from gamersgate and of course Matrix (can't remember their supplier's name).

I enjoyed Mass Effect's story, but the combat always seemed lacking. Still I played the 2nd one and it was pretty good. I liked having a ship and crew at my command. It's really about the interactions with your crew, that's where the fun is for me.

I'm an old Fallout I & II fan, so you can imagine what I think about the new Fallout games. Enough said.

As for Jedi Knight II, you can try the demo, but if it doesn't have lightsaber combat, then it's pretty pointless as it's the games biggest strength.

I don't know if you can download the full game. Amazon or Ebay ought to have copies for sale.

Trackmania United Forever. Just SO much content, longevity, and fun. The free demo, Trackmania Nations, is an excellent game in itself.

As always it's the next one to be released - combination of the grass is always greener and the collector instinct that a lot of us suffer from (though maybe I'm just speaking for myself)

At the moment I'm rather keen on Revolution Under Siege however this may be because 1. It's new and shiny (see above) 2. I'm used to and like the AGE engine it is based on 3. It games a point of history that I've always found interesting

+1 (billion)

I assume you mean computer game though (which sadly WIF isn't yet) - in which case it would have to be CIV IV.

Right now: Armada 2526 as each race has other goals, you have to change the way you play every time.

I know you asked for just one but i am adding another one:

Takeda 3 conquer Japan during the Sengoku period...each castle is unique....

Well, then you're limiting yourself. Steam is not "crap", just because you don't like it.

Steam is crap:

- It does not work for everyone.
- It does things on your computer it shouldn't do.
- It downloads an entire game even if you have it on a dvd.

Basically, while it works for many people, the program it's still in beta-stage....maybe it will work in 10 years.

I've bought games from Steam, as have many of our customers. It's a distribution platform and it definitely has pros and cons, but it's not a trivial thing providing and managing downloadable games to that many people. Caveat emptor as always, be an informed customer regardless of where you purchase. However, this thread itself was about game recommendations. It's pretty clear that Anthropoid would prefer non-Steam game recommendations, so let's stick to that.

Regards,

- Erik

I value and appreciate the digital distribution service provided by Gamersgate and Matrix. I've even used Impulse and did not dislike it.

It seems like you maybe need a change of genre for a bit, like you're burnt out on strategy gaming right now. Maybe grab one of the D&D titles GOG has been releasing over the past couple of months? Or get yourself a shooter and blow some stuff up.
