Master of Orion 3....i know many don't like but it's one of my classics too...have been playing a campaign since last week as the Tachidis.

Must admit I can't understand the hate either, at least against the game when fully modded/patched. Sure it has its problems and there are better 4Xs (including MoO2) but it is still really the only one that has really given me anything like a 'YOU are the Emperor' feel. I like the backstory, too.. you need that for any real 'space opera' feel, and recent releases just haven't bothered other than just enough waffle about 'ancients' and such in order to justify finding extra goodies.

Actually, I think the backstory is one of its weaker parts - they just HAD to shoehorn the previous installments into the prehistory. That, and the many red herrings contained in the story.

I can't resist this thread any longer.  I always come back to Harpoon, yes, I'm a Harpoon programmer but still it is true!

That's an easy question for me: despite all the latest and greatest, I keep returning to Matrix' signature game, which is Steel Panthers: World at War, using the Enhanced version by Alby's dedicated team. This group of fans, with assistance from programmer Michael Wood, has made this game a bonafide classic. It is only in this game that I can fight out the Marines' war in the Pacific. Of course, I contributed a bit to the USMC OOB and to one of the Mega Campaigns, so it also bears my personal stamp.

SPWAW ENH and standard always go back, even got it to work on WIN 7 (that took a bit of work had to turn off explorer so the graphics would look right)

i am trying to learn both WITP AE and HOI 3 SP right now so if I am of getting mad I load up SP and play it for a quick few turns

Left 4 Dead 2.

Great for when you just want to lessen stress by killing things.

Ahhh, a shotgun blast to a zombie's head......

The Total War series, particularly Rome and Medieval II. Right now I´m playing Medieval II with the Kingdoms expansion and the excellent Third Age mod - that is, Lord of the Rings.

Still works on my i7 920 64bit quad core w/vista64 OS

Find the DOS version and then download Defend-Reloaded http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/Download.html which is sort of an emulator for Dos games to high end computers OS's. Works great now even the sound which I had issues with when I was just using DosBox.

What games do I go back to?

Generally, the ones my wife refers to as "what the hell are you playing now."

A few years ago I put together a couple of Franco-Austrian War (Italy 1859) scenarios for Age of Rifles. My Battle of Montebello scenario is quite well balanced whereas my Magenta scenario is best played as the French against the AI.

I also made a Battle of Hastings scenario. The AoR game engine is far from ideal for 1066, but it just about works.
