Status: offline 		I have a couple questions on the best way to escort rear-area transports. For rear-area runs, like Noumea to Irau or Truk to Rabaul, I have mostly been using lesser ASW escorts like SC's and PC's, mostly to save DD's for front-line duty. So far, I haven't bagged a sub and lost a few escorts, but haven't lost a transport to a sub either. But I haven't played enough to really figure out the best strategy.

What does everyone else think? I am curious how you protect your rear-area convoys, if at all. Of course, anything I would send into a danger zone is escorted by DD's, with CAP flying over it. Thoughts?

Status: offline 		I'd suggest two things.

Always have at least 1 DD with your escorts (they will at least have passable experience as opposed to SC's etc). I've found that I normally have enough DD's in the hot area's to spare a few of the less combat capable ones for rear area duty. Their armament is not as important as their experience.

Put every available a/c on low level ASW patrol. By spotting subs, your heavily reducing their effectiveness. I normally have sufficient no's of a/c in rear area bases (as the forward ones are full) that would be doing nothing anyway.

Status: offline 		Drongo has it right. Use your AC for ASW patrol. SBD's make good sub killers and so do the PB4Ys. Use pairs of depthe charge equiped DDs to go after sub contacts.

80% of my conyoys are unescorted. I do use contact info from ASW patrol AC to reroute convoys around known sub contacts.

So far my biggest mistake has been to send a single DDs after a sub contact. That gets destroyers sunk. PT boat squadrons have had some success with anti-sub missions.

Status: offline 		As long as you are well out of enemy air range (and have the ships to spare) instead of a computer controlled, regular supply run of 4 or 5 escorts and 5 or 6 cargo ships, I like to form a big tf, usually five dd and 20 AP/AK. If your ports are big enough, supply is much more time efficient.
