Enemy surface units are operating off Portland Roads in support of a build up at Horn Island, landings at Terapo, with probably a landing at Port Moresby to follow.
They have established several isolated air bases, with the main force operating out of Townsville.

Friendly units have now concentrated undetected in the Arafura sea with 6 CV, 2 CVL and 2 CVE. These are supported by 3 SCTF, with a 4th to follow (with the BB’s that hit Darwin). Air units have concentrated at Umboi Island/Finschaven.

The enemy have now entered our “killing zone” and we intend to launch a massive attack from East and West with the full might of the IJN!

Mission
Destroy enemy forces Vic Nth Oz.

Execution
Phase 1 (day 1)
Carriers will move forward to 2 hex from Horn island and deliver massive blows to any naval force within 6 hex range.

Simultaneously 9 CL in two TF will strike at night Horn Island to damage aircraft and close the base.

30 Kates from Finshaven and 50 Betty from Rabaul escorted by Zero will strike invasion shipping at Terapo, if none are found they will hit ground forces.

150 Betty escorted by 100 Zero from Umboi will attack any enemy surface fleets within 14 hex of Umboi.

The Sub piquet line will advance seeking targets.

Phase 2 (Day 2)
Surviving forces will follow up strike land bases in an effort to destroy as many enemy aircraft as possible.

Enemy fleet units will be engaged as appropriate.

Phase 3
PM resupplied
Horn Island neutralised/invaded (by the two Div that took Darwin).

End state
Enemy forces in Nth Oz are heavily attrited gaining several months of delay. Port Moresby is held with the ability to bring forward more supply. Horn Island is neutralised and prepared for a counter invasion.

Red solid Line - movement of CV forces.
Dotted line - CL bombardment TF.
Dashed lines – planned airstrikes.

Well the results are in, see below, but a summery.

The good
2 Enemy CV sunk, none of ours.
170 enemy aircraft killed, only 130 of ours of which 30-40 were low quality Zero’s.
A BB hit with a torp.
Our CV aircraft didn’t launch, so we are in good shape for more strikes.

The Bad
Our CV’s didn’t launch, turning a potentially crushing victory into “merely” a good one.
We lost a DD and 2 CL, we are likely to lose 2 CA and a CL to fires.
Only half our Betty force launched, and a third of that half turned back.

In the end the weather was the winner... so much for the “clear skies” forecast!

The tactical situation saw us move nicely as planned, but someone had “do not retire” still on for the CL TF’s, and they got clobbered, fortunately the KB fighters (with KB under cloud... as well as the enemy TF’s) still participated and we shot down a lot of attacking aircraft.

Our CV’s reacted one hex, leaving the CA Tf in the desired hex, which was cloud free, but which invited an attack from the enemy CV’s, again our fighters flew in support... but not pretty for either side.

The enemy TF’s reacted 1-3 hexes, leaving them a bit spread out. Most of the time they were in cloud, however our ground based strike aircraft managed to find and sink the two trailing ones.

They landed more forces at Terapo, a baseforce by the look of it, that TF took a torp hit to a BB.

Here is the whole combat turn for your dissection!

In a piece of inspiration Tony positions KB close to the Oz coast, with coarl reef on three sides, protecting us from surface action, daylight breaks and through the clouds enemy shipping is detected at range 7 (max Kate torp range, Val 60kg range) off Cooktown trying to get as much Cap support as possible. The morning phase sees many strike aircraft return due to weather, but some make it through. The afternnon sees many more strikes.

The results are in with another 2 CV sunk, a third sucking a torp as well as a BB, CA 2 CL and several smaller vessels sunk.

Our Zeros suffer heavily, but our strike aircraft are failrly intact.

They take Terapo, can't see how they can keep it though...

We loose two CA and a CL from the battle last turn, as expected.

Off Burma our bombardment force does little damage, and is attacked in return. This will be the last effort up here and our forces will retire deeper. We will largely hunker down in Burma for a while.

Our big question is "what will the enemy do now?"

If the Allies have had 4 American CVs sunk, they are in trouble for the foreseeable future. Overall, that will move back any potential Allied major counteroffensive back to sometime in 44. Great news for you as this war will be going into 46 before its over. IMO, that was too early to try a counteroffensive into an area where both LBA and CVs 'could' be present in numbers. Cooktown would have been built up to max by me for 4e bombers and Portland Roads for 2e bombers. A prolonged bombing campaign would have been needed before this leap.

KUDOS!!!

Or the JFB side of me, BANZAI!!!

You caught 'em and pounded them. Good execution and a cute trick to hide in the Great Barrier Reef like that!

Thanks Gents

They key to this was switching our axis of attack from Nth of PNG, to come in from the western flank. We almost committed KB around the southern tip of PNG into the Allied airpower, but then thought better of it, deciding to maintain our fleet in being and take up a central position. We did this in part because we felt we had concentrated enough ground based airpower to defend the SWPAC approach.

They came into our "killing zone" and we closed the other flank...but they still had the south to escape... a bit of Sun Tsu here, always leave an escape for the enemy, then you know which way they will probably go!

Cooktown is level 5 , Portland Roads is level 4 airfield.

I think Andrew rushed here a bit, he was keen to get some momentum going and to "break in" to our defences... but it was always less than a 50-50 chance, never good odds. He should have gone step by step into the DEI, to free up the route to Darwin, using ground based air cover.

In the end we did come off fairly lightly, weather impacted the actions. Without it we probably would have had a massive CV battle, and we probably would have lost 1-3 CV's... but we would have probably anhilated all the Allied CV's, then sunk a lot more combat ships.

Andrew can still advance, now he needs to synchronise his ground air better, not rely on the CV "magic bullet" and grind slowly and surely towards his goal.

We have bought ourselves time to continue to dig in, and create more defensive depth, in particular in the DEI.

We are also free to raid the enemy LOC... we have already started

Cheers

Rob

Fuel in Japan is still a problem, supplies are slowly growing. Resorces collecting quiet well, Oil we have 6 months supply now.
