Off Efate we send in a DD squadron to clear the PT boats, we kill one boat, the rest run away :(

China
We cause another 1000 casulties to the troops in the open west of Nanning. Two more of our divs have now caught up and we have 1750AV... to attack or not...

We are now at Tuyun, we should take the place on the attack next turn.

Andrew is still building up Noumea and playing it cautiously, good play, but what we want (well after a rash ill concieved attack that is!).

Cheers

Rob

I just finished reading this great AAR. Very easy to read, as signal to noise ratio is excellent. Consider me subscribed.

Summary of Operations in China
After turning back the Allied forces from Warzup in Burma in early Nov 1942 we identified an opportunity to shift our two division strategic reserve from Singapore to commit in China.

The situation at that time was we were grinding away in the sth, making a little bit of headway, but the main focus for both sides was nth central China.

The initial aim was to capture Nanning, with the subsequent objective being Liuchow.

We managed to get the extra forces and supply in without being detected, and Nanning fell after some hard manoeuvring and a concentration of air power.

We then advanced on Liuchow. Andrews forces in that sector where being "pinned" by a number of units and a large stack threatening several places on his line. Liuchow was relatively lightly defended.

Once we made it to Liuchow Andrew made the mistake of not reinforcing it, and over a period of a week or more we ground the defenders down from the air and grounds and took the place.

The defenders retreated east, leaving the route to the north open except for one large corps.

This corps was caught in the open by our massed armour and air and was routed.

WE are now deep in China (see map below). However like many historical deep thrusts issues with logistics and support forces means that we are probably about to culminate for a few days.

Our success here has been a bit unexpected and we have failed to provide sufficient supply (we have enough, just, but more would be better).

The critical decision was when Andrew did not reinforce Liuchow in time (partially due to a flanking force that we had sent in and air support on the flanks). This has change the face of China for the better :)

Observations
Massed armour works great in the open against Chinese forces, and does OK in the wooded areas.

Chinese forces cannot stand in the open.

The Japanese player can afford to fight a battle of attrition at the "break in" point with adequate supply.

Massed close air support in support of the main effort, and interdiction of flanking forces works.

Future Intentions
Another three div (including the 3rd Tank Div) are in transit from Nth to south to continue the push.

Bring in more supply.

Drive on Moscow from the south :)

Andrew may have to abandon central China, or risk being cut off... a tough call.

I always find China is at a "balance" point at game start that can be tipped by the Allies or Japan. A series of victories either way and it can turn ugly fast. Japan has the ability to recover more through the application of reinforcements and supply. The Allies can provide air support.

Blue circles indicate the main concentrations of Chinese forces.

Recently read the great primer by Damian http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2933397

Some excellent stuff there, in particular the "ship efficiency" that he has calculated, and should appear in Tracker 1.9. We will start to modify our convoys to take advantage of this information, although we aren't too bad at the moment :)

More importantly though Allied subs are starting to bite, and we need to rethink convoys.

Andrew is focussing on two areas, one to the east of Japan towards China, and the other south of Nagoya. He is keeping to the deep water where our depth charges generally don't go.

So far we have run a lot of smaller convoys with 1-3 escorts. This allows the optimum use of the port loading, but the escort to ship ratio is low, and the total escorts required is high.

Instead we are going to now look at the following.

Singapore will remain a hub for Burma, Sumatra and the islands around there. Shallow water keeps Andrew away, and we have a number of ASW TF (but few aircraft).

From Singapore large convoys will use the shallow water route to Cam Ranh Bay (currently a 6(6) port - will build it up more, Saigon has restrictions on the river). We will need to put an AV at one of the islands near this route to try and get some search coverage.

Stuff from Borneo will also head to Camranh Bay (already does).

Stuff will then rail to Haiphong.

From Haiphong large convoys, led by an ASW TF will assemble for the leg to Japan. This route is well covered by Aircraft and will use the shallow water where possible... but it will need to fight its way through.

We are still looking at the southern routes from the East DEI (Resources and Oil) and from the Philipines. I'm very tempted to route these nth as well... That will avoid the deep water "killing ground" between Formosa and Tokoy.

Convoy to and from the SWPAC/SOPAC will use the island chain sth of Tokyo (where we have built an offshore airbase), through to the Bonin Islands (more aircraft) then on to the Marianas. These will become more infrequent, but larger, to Truk and Rabaul.

This image shows the top of the convoy route with approximate air coverage.

The problem with this is that once Andrew finds the route he will focus on it... and we may then need to change. It is also vulnerable to raids. To counter this Marcus Isalnd is being being built up, recently the first part of the Combined 8th SNLF CD gun unit was emplaced on the island. It is already home to 18 Emily. It is about to hit level 6 forts, then the airfields will be built.

We also have a two CVE TF in this area to help deal with raids.

this will ultimately use more fuel (but at the DEI end, not the Japan end) and will be less efficient, but should limit losses....

Been looking at the shipping we have at Palembang it looks like we could ship TK convoy direct from Palembang to Cam Ranh Bay in 7900 TK. Need some search coverage in the centre though, Groot Natoena will be occupied and an AV or two placed there to provide coverage and warning (detected subs are far less effective).

In other news have turned off most of the armaments, we have a stockpile of 145000... Also starting to shut off Tojo IIa factories (IIc is 3 months away at most and we have 100 in the pool, and everything is upgraded... even in China!). This should get us a fair bit of estra HI a turn.

Engines are all about where we need them, but we will soon need to boost Ha-45 as late 43 we need 1000 a month (producing 280 now, pool of 500).

Curious to know how much HI and Armaments is enough?

Vehicle points have recent gone from "critical" most turns (under 500) to now over 3000... may need to turn them down a bit too.

10 Jan 1943 Small Naval Battle at Efate

Indicators and Warnings

Subs
Lots of sub sightings and attacks.

Burma

DEI

OZ
After playing around with the air force around Nth OZ we get a good strike:

Morning Air attack on 2/7th Armoured Regiment, at 75,125 , near Darwin

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 18 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-49-IIa Helen x 46

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
Vehicles lost 54 (4 destroyed, 50 disabled)

This result, plus it looks like Andrew has just sent 4 Oz Armoured Regts and a Motor Bde towards Darwin, has encouraged us to consider a counter attack, so will move our Div and three Tk Regts out to do battle, and hopefully route the force while we have the air advantage.

We also hit the airfield at Katherine. Looks like Andrew hasn't bough much in the way of BF or engineers nth.

Pacific
At Efate we come in to clear the PT's:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Efate at 120,154, Range 1,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Isokaze
DD Shiranui
DD Nowaki
DD Hagikaze
DD Tanikaze
DD Kasumi

DD Inazuma

Allied Ships
PT-155, Shell hits 3, and is sunk
PT-156, Shell hits 16, and is sunk
PT-160, Shell hits 4, and is sunk

But then unexpectantly find some DD's!

Night Time Surface Combat, near Efate at 120,154, Range 6,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Isokaze
DD Shiranui
DD Nowaki
DD Hagikaze
DD Tanikaze
DD Kasumi

DD Hatsuharu
DD Inazuma

Allied Ships
DD Hammann, Shell hits 2
DD Mustin, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Perkins, Shell hits 1
DD Preston, Shell hits 1

We return to rearm and refuel.

The invasion force is now at Efate ready to unload and retake the island.

Convoy to and from the SWPAC/SOPAC will use the island chain sth of Tokyo (where we have built an offshore airbase), through to the Bonin Islands (more aircraft) then on to the Marianas. These will become more infrequent, but larger, to Truk and Rabaul.

For the central route you could place an AV or a small AF Coy on dot bases and use float planes for ASW to cover the gaps. The Jakes with the 10 hex range does well. It won't sink anything, but will sight them and try attacks.

China
We are now two hex from Chungking...

The key is the enemy force circled in blue... how strong is it... we are a bit weak at this "hinge". If we have to we will allow the armour to be cut off as it exploits deep, supplied by air... also looking at several possible targets of para assaults...

We are thin on the ground, but have air support and reasonable supply... he has numbers, but that is it...

Thoughts
Andrew has to be planning something, NORPAC, CENTPAC or DEI are our areas of weakness.

We have screen forces out to cover these approaches reasonably well...

We are also monitoring likely assembly areas.

He lacks a real CV capability, but he could risk something over the next few months.

We have detected NO convoys in the IO anywhere!

He continues to have large unit counts in Australia, although the US units that were on the central Australian axsis appear to have turned back, instead this thrust is primarily Australian, led by the 7th Div. These units are mostly around Townsville, although there are 30 odd units in Noumea still.

For the DEI he needs to concentrate at or north of Ceylon, or in Perth. both are being watched.

For Centpac he has the support base of Christmas Island maxed out, and Hawaii. We have assets watching these areas, 167 ships at Pearl at the moment...

The conclusion from this is that the only area he is currently positioned for offensive action is in Burma or the South Pacific.

He needs to reallocate at least some assets to attack somewhere else, and we should get several days notice.

So no major changes by us, except keep up the surveillance!

Andrew has now moved troops onto our "hinge" and our armoured thrust is about to be cut off... but we have a city producing supplyu, and more is flying in, so should bea temporary thing.

There is reports of troop movements at Changsha... heading inland... maybe he will abandon it to free up troops.

The first of the units from Nth China will be in south china where they are needed in about 10 days, led by the armoured units.

16 Jan 1943 Lots happening!

Indicators and Warnings
The TF detected in the Pacific (see below) is an important indicator. It was heading west, towards the South Pacific/Australia. The mix of ships tells us a lot, primarily that this axis continues to be a high priority.. Of course sinking this TF may change that!

In Burma a stack of 7 units are now detected nth of Warzup... this indicates that the land campaign, rather than the more feared amphib invasion, is likely.

The Gull battalion outside Darwin indicates that the 8th Australian Div has not been reformed, one less division to have to consider in the future.

Subs
We don't have many convoys at sea in the dangerous locations at the moment, waiting for DD's and the like to finish upgrades. This will be a glitch to our resource gathering.

Burma
We take the hex outside Paoshin, which is now open. I doubt we can be stopped now.

Ground combat at 64,45 (near Paoshan)

Defending units:

Moving units around to deal with the attack in nth Burma, we have a lot of time to prepare, and are more dug in than we were last time, andsupply is better... so although we have committed forces over the border into Burma we are in good shape... I think...

China
We have now cut Chungking off to the southern area of the China defensive line, this will really kill any supply flowing.

Our forces are likley to be cut off to the north, but have enough supply and more is coming in.

Just about ready to launch some para attacks as well...

The blue circles are the hexes we wanted to get to to stop supply flowing south.

The red circle is our "hinge" it is very weak (a recon regiment!), but Andrew hasn't attacked yet, so we trying to suck as much supply north as we can. We will hold the cities north and south for the moment and wait for the reinforcments to arrive before we attack.

The armoured div outside Chungking may be strong enough to take the city... but if we loose it could be nasty... so we will wait a little bit.

Burma 16 Jan 1943

Overall fairly happy, we are quite well dug in, Warzup up nth is the least dun in base, most are 5 or 6. Supply is adequete, but not great. With 1500 AV chasing China we are down a bit... another couple of dives would be good, but we should be OK.

Another few weeks and China will have collapsed, so lots will be free for a counter attack...

The dotted lines shows the moves we are considering, by retreating west we can be supplied by air, and should eventually meet up with the forces coming from Burma.

Out Div though is near Chungking, it can head east...

At least we are building up a good stock of armour points to rebuild these forces if needed...

Pacific
CV Battle. In the morning our planes don't fly as both our and the enemy CV's are in cload. The enemy attack a SCTF we had formed though... In the afternoon we both fly, we put all our fighters on escort abandoning our CV's to their fate. This works well as our strike packages make it through the enemy CAP.... then miss... everything! Tough day, but you can't win them all. Raiding is all about timing and it's hard to walk the fine line without slipping on occasion.
