What did you do to get such good bombardment results at Darwin? Each time I bombard a base with "heavy" DC guns of any number the bombarding ships concentrate fire on them alone...

Erkki, all the ships in the TF are firing.

It is a "clear" hex, very little cover.

Good captains.

Good crews...

Good recon of the target...

Enemy already disrupted and out of supply.

About the best mix of factors you can get!

The BB TF is supported by 4 AKE and an AO TF at Samulaki. Samulaki has lots of supply to reload the tenders.

This was a planned battle to bring all the sea, land and air assets together at a point in space and time ... very pleased with the results!

Cheers

Rob

Indicators and Warnings
Main effort being made in central burma. Over 30 units detected advancing. In the north 6 units continue to sit outside Warzup.
Subs

Burma
We sweep the troops advancing through the jungles, bad weather cancels our bombers though. Overall losses are about 1:1, at around 10-15, we loose 4 pilots.

Enemy bombers hit Myitkyina.

This is now looking like a main push, with around 2000-2500 advancing from Ledo, and around 1000 nth of Warzup. The main body is the concern.

We are starting to move the few reserevs we have outside of Burma this way. This includes increasing the rate of reinforcements to the Malaya/Nth Sumtra area... however the cupboard is fairly bare. We are resigned to loosing Katha at some stage soon. We wil try to clear the rail line though to pull out some forces.

Rearranging the forces at Warzup/Myitkyina.

Our forces from China are now close to being back where the main action is.

Concerned about para drops, in particular on Bhamo. That wouldn't be nice...

Rearanging forces to free up some regiments for use Burma Nth/ Sumatra

Bombardments at Tuyun.

Situation Feb 1943

Burma

Andrew has taken the opportunity to invade Burma while our forces took Paoshan. Unfortunately he has learnt from the first attack and is coming in force onto the "hinge". In hindsight should have moved some things here earlier... We have a few options:

Option A. Retreat everything from the north down the rail line while it is open or the back road via Bhamo.

Option B. Keep the ground units in the north, accept the tempory loss of Katha if we have to and try to get 3-4 div into the jungle nth of Shwebo. Possibly counter attack.

Option C. Concentrate at Mandalay and see what happens.

We will try to do Option B, however we are concerned that the Allied air will be too strong. We area also concerned about defending Mandalay, also open ground, however we are at level 6 forts there. We will try to keep the railline and pull out as many support units as possible, leaving two div equivalents to defend the north, while keep ing the back road through Bhamo open.

We are striping "spare" units, ground and air from wher we can to concentrate in Burma.

While it will be a close run things I think Andrew is trying this a little early... we shall see!

DEI/Malaya

We are not confident that all Andrews strength is committed in Burma. He could have 2-3 divs "spare". Our greatest concern is that these could appear in one of three areas in priority order.

Nth Malaya/Sth Burma (GeorgeTown - Victoria Point). We have been digging in and putting what we can into this area for a while, however now we will speed the process up. A garrison unit from the Philipines will head to Victoria Point, and a recently arrived Air HQ will head this way.

Sumatra.
We are moving the air HQ from Port Blair to Sabang, as Port Blair is now threatened by the level 6 airfield at Akyab. We have a reasonable garrison at Sabang, and in the centre coast of Sumatra, the south though is largely ungarrisoned, however the airfields are prepared and defences are built... just need to occupy them!

Gap Java-Timor.
We are starting to build a base to cover this area, with some more air Bn on the way... but we have no ground troops.

Malaya/Sumatra would come from the north, we have recon subs and fairly good air coverage, so will have a few days warning... we hope. Mini KB is in this area as well. However if the US CV's joined up then we would be in trouble...

The Java-Timor gap is our weakest area. However we have recon well down the coast around perth and out into the Indian Ocean. So far no warning signs. We have some surface fleets in this area, and it is fairly easy to move aircraft from the SWPAC, and KB could get over here fairly quickly and isolate any landings.

OZ

We have defeated and routed the forces on the central Australian approach, and could now afford to free up an armoured unit or two. We are building the airfields at Darwin and aim to hold it for a while yet.

There are still large unit counts on the east coast of Australia.

SWPAC/SOPAC
We are close to evacuating the forces from Fiji. They have served their purpose, we have now dug in our main defensive line, are well on the way on our second line and have started on the third... we just need troops to occupy the defences... and we can no longer afford the luxury of having Fiji.

New Caledonia is strongly held by the enemy, we expect another push from this direction...

Centpac
We largely don't care, we are nicely dug in, have early warning out and KB in the area... however it won't be reinforced.

Norpac
We are gradually improving our position up here, ground combat forces being the main issue. I think we have another two months before we really need to get concerned...

China
We are doing well here as we have committed about 5 Divs from the southern Army. We are close to being in a position to pull 2 of those out soon... we need to.

We are trying to generate a reserve force, reinforce Burma, DEI and Norpac...just not enough combat troops...

Supply and fuel are our biggest limitations. Java is now supply positive and exporting it out to Burma and the DEI. Fuel is a limitaion for industry and operations. We have plenty of tankers, and are sucking everywhere dry except Palembang. There we struggle to get the fuel out due to port limits. We have a level 4 ports and 400 Naval support.

Our aircraft research is doing well. Tojo IIC is now a month away, George is 3 months away and now has 3 factories of 32 producing, and another 3 only a few days away from producing. We have turned 3 of the Tojo IIc factories to Shindin. Frank factories are repairing slowly, mostly due to a lack of supply in the Home Islands.

We are banking about 3000 HI a day at the moment and have 494904 in the pool.

Armaments continue to slowly increase.

We have 4000 vehicle points, however need to increase this in case our armour in China gets mauled.

Both Naval and Merchant points have run out. Can't afford the supply to build more. Have stopped a lot of things... will have to do some more.

Scenario 1 poses problems for the IJA as ground troops are tough to come by once the new Empire is conquered. Almost makes me understand the historical IJA's refusal to invade Oz or to expand the perimeter. They always complained about lack of troops. I'll be watching with great interest how y'all address these issues.

Hello. May I ask how you have managed to accelerate the Tojo IIc by a year? How many factories have you had researching it?

To Miller's question, was it an artifact of the now squashed bug in the beta?

Ref Tojo IIC.
We had 6 x 32 strong factories producing the IIC. We started these back in Feb/March 42. The bug bought it forward maybe two months more than it should have, however I think we would have caught it up anyway and the end result would have been similar, maybe a month earlier than it should have.

We have paid for the though in that our supply for about 6 months in the home islands has been borderline critical. This is now hurtig our defence of Burma.

Ref Land Forces
Yes the lack of ground combat capability is a big issue for the IJA. Our benefit has been having CV dominance for several months, which makes a deep thrust increadibly risky, and the fact we trashed US forces in particular in the Pacific early on.

We have comitted heavily into China... and we are starting to pay the price in Burma... I think it will be worth it in the end, as long as we can hold central Burma.

We have decided that now is as good a time as any to fight a battle of attrition in Burma on the ground and in the air.

We are going to reinforce Katha, bring it up to about 400 AV behind level 4 forts.

We will concentrate 5-7 div at Mandalay and advance nth. We will suffer from the Allied air, and we will need max fighter effort. We have bought in another 200 fighters to the theatre, now have around 600. This will be a big bloody grind. Need to bring in more supply and air support.

7 Feb 1943 Chindits Para Drop on Bhamo! Kweiyang holds again.

Indicators and Warnings

Here is the situation in Burma. Our airbases from Mandaly south are 6-7 and all are close to 6 forts. We need to build some up to level 9 to support George.

We are concentrating about 4 div at Shwebo, with another two on the way by sea. We will then move north, while he tries to reduce Katha... Hopeully that will provide a dilema for him, and divide his air support.

The Red line is our fall back line, we will start to filter back engineer units to start digging in along that line.

We have more air support and supplies on the way. Both are short considering we have the bulk of the Japanese airforce in this area.

Here is China.
After we thrust north towards Moscow Andrew cutt in behind us (dashed blue line). Once we had enough combat power we followed, clearing the road and forcing the Chinese units into Tuyun, where they are now trapped, and out numbered 2:1 with liitle or no supply.

Once we have beasted them once or twoce so they are no threat, we can then march north to relieve Kweiyang, although the comander there indicates he has it well under control as long as we can get more machine gun ammo for his tanks... He was happy to start recieving reinforcements by air.

South of there Andrew has come out to try to cut our overland march route. Both hex are held by 1/3rd divs, and should hold. Meanwile convoys pass under the nose of the enemy troops, with more on the way.

This has been a risky operation, and opened up Burma a bit... but the reults so far are worth it, the Chinese army is badly trashed and out of supply and we have seized many useful cities with industry and resources which are flowing nicely.

8 Feb 1943 Air Battles continue in Burma.

Indicators and Warnings

Subs
Our ASW efforts and re-routing of ships has been effective. Taking us more effort hoevere we aren't loosing ships.

Burma
He doesn't reinforce the troops at Bhamo, we had almost 200 aircraft on LRCAP there, they are now blown and need rest. Our combat strength there is now up to 120 AV, so it looks to be safe.

The bloody air battles continue over our div in the open, we are loosing more aircraft (50 odd to 30), but only 11 pilots. Again P-38 are the main problem for us.

We manage to maintain some form ofCAp, and turn back about half of the B-25 in the end.

Here is the current aircraft production.

Have had to turn back on all Tojo IIa and Helen IIa factories to make up for recent losses. Note the Tojo IIc come on next month, we switched all the IIa reserach to that, and already had a factory researching it. As it was nearing coming in to service we recently switched most of those research factories to Shinden.

The George will be allowed to progress forward one more month (currently 6 x 32 resarch factories producing, and another 11 x 32 factories fully repaired within 15 days). Then about half will be switched to the later series of the George while the other half start production.

Hoping for Jill to come on soon as well.

Frank is taking its time, mainly as the factories are located in areas which have continual supply shortages :( The factories are all about half repaired, we probably made them a bit to big considering how many factories we have researching (about 20 x 32 factories!)...

Our engine factories are almost all ahead of requirements by "a bit" and so our pools are growning. The exception is the HA-45, we have a pool of 789 engines, are producing 310 a month/10 a day, but are well below the eventual demand reuired, we will have 440 of the potential demand of 1100. By the time Frank comes in we should be about in balance.
