Indicators and Warnings
The returns from bombarding Portland Roads are now diminishing. We have forced him to move south and inland to Coen. This will free our forces to just hit Horn Island.

Still no sign on the WA coast of the Tf that we detected off eastern Australia with CV protection... At least we are past the worst danger period as our CV forces are coming out of upgrades.

Subs
They are everywhere around Japan again! Managing to avoid being hit, more luck than anything else. Our air though claims lots of succesful attacks and hits.

This is what we are concerned about. While it is a huge mass, their offensive capability in woods rough, we have level 1 forts and armour, makes any attack risky... if it worked though we will be in trouble... we have another 1000 AV about 4 days out... once that gets into the hex we will be ok. Status: offline 		Considering that that force consists of roughly 28 Corps, the AV is quite low. That pretty much shows just how badly you've beaten the Chinese up over the last 16 months.

Status: offline 		Thanks DTurtle, from the glass half full perspective considering how much we have hurt the Chinese the fact they can create an Army of 5000 AV (see below) is why we need to continue to treat them with respect... next turn could be nasty...

26 Apr 1943 Yamato still lives, in fact flt damage has gone down to 65...

Recon of Melbourne indicates 158 ship sin Port, including Cv and CA class... this is good news as it means there is no invasion TF heading up the West Australian coast.

Geraldton makes a level 3 port though... so he is preparing.

Actually I think it is pretty cool that this sort of thing is modelled. The Great Barrier reef was poorly charted, until very recently some of the best soundings on the charts were done by Captain Cook in the 1770's!

A big ship or two a year hits the reef trying to cut corners, or not reading the GPS properly...

Status: offline 		Work and Real Life have stopped the AAR, the game has gone to a crawl (1 turn a day at max). Not a lot happening, we are supressing the subs but still loosing ships. Burma is quite as Andrew builds up forces/supply. China we have both settled into big mega stacks (2-3000Japanese AV vs 5-7k Allied) outside Chungking.

Still waiting for Andrew to move elsewhere.

After almost two weeks of relative quite, winth mainly sub actions resulting in low losses, this turn becomes very interesting in Burma, at Horn Island and in China.

We have two 3000AV stacks on the roads out of Chungking staring at 5-6k AV of Chinese...




Over the turn we loose 90 aircraft, including 60 helen. Andrew looses about 40 aircraft. We were VERY lucky not to loose a couple of BB in this turn. We now have two badly damaged BB who will be in yards for about a year we expect.



Logistics wise we have sucked all our oil/fuel centres dry and are keeping it that way. We have about 50 days of Fuel in the home islands, and 90 of oil. The Pacific now has over 300,000 points of fuel, split between Truk and Rabaul. We should be able to focus on moving fuel home now for a while. Oil and fuel is travlling nicely from the Saigon/CamRanh Bay to Korea. We have piles of resources in the home islands, in China and in Vietnam (500k at Hanoi).

The last of our CV's will be out of refit in about a week. We have a few CA undergoing repair/refit but otherwise the fleet is in good shape, except for those two badly damaged BB's.

We have pulled two div out of China, with one from Manchuria. Two div are heading to Sorebaya, and one to Burma.

Status: offline 		Ok an update, my work has been very busy, getting a turn done every other day... but I'm currently in Orlando in the USA for a conference so have a little bit of time.

We are now up to 14th Jun 1943. I'll do an area by area update with maps later.

Situation
Position wise there has been no real change.

In Burma Andrew hasn't advanced out of the jungle, we have deployed extra forces and are now well dug in. We have destroyed the three Burmese airbases he has (Katha, Myitkynia and Warzup) and keep them 100% damaged. We have had a couple of big airbattles, which we generally have done better in, and Andrew mainly is focussing on building aircrew experience and a reserve. He is aerial mining Rangoon, and has done one industry raid...

In Oz he is positioned for either a move up the West or East costs. We are slowly pulling out of Darwin, and reinforcing the DEI. There was an effort a week ago to close down Darwin with B-24... until we moved all of Mini KB into support and shot down 20-40 of 80 B-24 or the raid :)

SWPAC is quite. All bases including PM are open, however Andrew has demonstrated he can close them down at will. He is now operating out of Horn island with fighters.

SOPAC is all quite. We still hold FIJI, but only because Andrew hasn't sent the girl scouts to take it back... Marines could do it as well :)

NORPAC has seen a couple of probes, we are slowly reinforcing here and the probes have been sent back quickly. Subs are the main problem.

China is supply positive and quiet. We are bombing the airfields (HR rule out bombing the industry) and building pilot experience.


We consider the DEI and NORPAC our greatest areas of weakness. Both are slowly improving, but we need more forces.

Navy
KB is centralised and in a useful location in the DEI.

We have 2 badly damaged BB's (including Yamato, who probably won't see action again in the game). Otherwise the fleet is intact. TK losses are light and we have spare capacity sitting in useful locations.

Enemy subs are largely suppressed, but are taking a lot of Naval and air assets to do so.

Air R&D
Frank has just entered production at 300 or so a month :)

B6N2 is ready to produce as well.


Air
We have significant excess of aircraft of useful types, with George, Zero 5b, Frank and Tojo all with good production numbers.

Our frontline sqns are full of experienced and well trained pilots.

We have a growing reserve of experienced and trained pilots, 440 Army, 270 navy, with about an equal mix of fighter to strike reserve pilots.

Industry
We are sucking the DEI dry, and barely building our reserves in the home islands of fuel and oil. partially because we have excellent reserves of fuel in the SWPAC and on Java with all the AO's full and ready to support the fleet.

We are swimming in resources, and can afford to cease running many convoys once the air/sub threat increases.

Fuel, oil and resources flow through China to Korea OK... but not that effectively and it is hard to control. A lack of fuel in China at times stops the HI from producing, which is annoying.

Talking of HI it is at 750,000 and increasing at about 2000-2500 pts a day.


Conclusion
We are basically waiting for Andrew to attack, he is now immensely strong, and unless we get the invasion force at sea we stand no chance of stopping any move. Having said that we have great strategic depth now, and are generally working on the 3rd and 4th defensive lines... so it will be a hard slog for him.

We are searching everywhere for signs of his concentration. India and NE OZ are the key areas of concern for us. But so far no definite indicators and warnings.

Status: offline 		Ok despite good intentions I didn't get the time. I will update now as things have just started to get interesting!

This covers the Period 15 Jun to 17 Jul. For most of this period very little happened, however we were increasingly getting an "itch" and started to move things around trying to stir the pot.

Strategic assessment
We had identified our greatest weakness as being the DEI, both Sumatra and the islands east of Java. To that end we had all our CV forces operating from this area and had our two reserve div with sipping at Sorebaja. Over half the combat fleet is here, but our defence was a series of isolated, mutually supporting strong points.... with big gaps.

The Kuriles were also a concern; however they were being rapidly supported, boasting about two div spread over the islands with a growing air capability and a small supporting fleet.

Our most recent review indicated a potential risk to the Marianas, it was low as it would be a very gutsy move going that deep with only CV parity... however as the SWPAC was so strong we have been diverting a regt here and there and now that inner arc is both well fortified and now reasonable defended.

Stirring the Pot
First we sent KB on a raid deep south of Perth as there were indications of activity occurring on the Western Australia Coast. We ended up finding a convoy, but weather largely neutered our attacks, so we headed back to the DEI.

We also sent mini KB to poke around towards Horn Island, and started a mining campaign on Horn Is.

Finally in support of our suppression of Carnarvon we had been sending in an occasional bombardment TF.

Enemy Actions Phase 1
He marched an Australian Div (3rd) overland from Carnarvon to Port Hedland. But found the base stronger than he expected and halted a hex out under sea and air attack.

We detected strong surface forces coming up the West Australian Coast, and one of our bombardment TF run into an APD force at Carnarvon, but the APD's got away.

We also detected a lot of movement on the top east coast of Australia, including a strong TF with CLAA class ships.

We had consistent SIGINT of lots of radio traffic occurring on the route from Madagascar to India.

As KB had not made Sorebaya, and was in fact exactly a sprint distance away from the action at Carnarvon we sent KB and on the 12th we got a long range strike from KB, weather knocked out about half the strike though :(

Still not bad for a mornings work!


Then on about the 14th we detected a large number of subs heading into the exit from the Makassar strait.

On the 15th we detected ships deeper as the enemy subs were engaged by our ASW forces from Sabang.

KB was immediately diverted from its route back to Sorebaya, the reserve divs were loaded and aircraft began to be diverted from as far away as the Kuriles.

Enemy Actions Phase 2
CVE TF appeared at Wake by passing our ISR assets (in hindsight this was a feint, the fact was we never saw it and therefore didn’t react to it!).

Strong enemy SCTF went past Horn Is for the first, but as we already had sufficient coverage to counter it we did not react.

Analysis
It is now apparent that this was a series of feints designed to distract us from the real actions. They have partially worked, but as our centre of reactive mass is in the DEI anyway we are now in a good position to counter… the question we are asking ourselves is “do we have enough”.

Well lots of action on the 17th Jul 1943.

As background both sides have large numbers of well trained aircrew. We have had very little combat, the JAAF is well trained, experienced and has a good reserve (200+) of trained aircrew with another 50 about to graduate. Overall we have bled the Allies more than they have us, but this is now relative as we know they have oodles of good aircraft.

We have had George for some time, and Frank for about a month (which Andrew doesn't know, but is expecting). We have 200 Frank in the pool and three units currently equipping. We have oodles of Zero, Oscar and Tojo IIa and IIc.

Burma
The skies darken over central Burma, Mandalay and Meiktila are level 9 bases with several supporting bases in the surrounding hexes. About 250 of our fighters are spread over these bases, but recently we have pulled out about 100 and moved them south.

Overall we loose about 100 fighters, shoot down about 40, but only loose 28 pilots.

The good news is we now know where all the Marine units are!

The P-47D were very nasty :(

Enemy ground units are also on the move and he has begun resupplying his troops by air again.

All our bases are level 6 forts so it should be a grind for him. We have 3-4000 AV in Burma in total.


Port Blair
Port Bair is swept by CV aircraft and bombed by CV and land based air (B-17, B-24). It only houses ISR aircraft though, mostly float planes, as we long ago recognised that it is too vulnerable for strike aircraft to be based there.

Sumatra
A BB Tf is detected off Sumatra and attacked twice, with only the first being effective.

An invasion forces is detected heading in, about 2 days out. Sabang is 250 AV behind level 5 forts... but that is about it on the north of Sumatra. But we will probably land our two reserve div here somewhere.

All quiet, except for the movement of our ships, troops and planes which are all moving west!

SWPAC
All quiet. The SCTF that we detected around Horn Is has fled south.

SOPAC
We hold everything down to NZ except for New Caledonia still! Almost no forces south of Tulagi/Guadalcanal which are now major bases.

CENTPAC
He bombards Wake, but then buggers off SE. No landing.

NORPAC
All quiet.

Analysis
The main effort is definitely now in Burma/Sumatra axis. We are in reasonable shape to counter.

KB is at sea getting some sea room, almost fully prepped with full bunkers and all the AO's in support.

We are pulling out reserve air units from seal areas to form an air strike force.

Our reserve divs are at sea and we have a day to decide where we land.

Our counter forces are off the south edge somewhere :)

We have set up a series of "strong points" The key ones are Sabang at the Victoria Point / Chumphon area. Singora is built up, but not curently occupied.

Air assets are moving in to target the invasion fleet.

Status: offline 		Looks like we will get a chance to see whether the direct move on Palembang via Sumatra will work. A decent plan, but in the form that appears to be under consideration the Allies could find themselves isolated and a long way from India. IMHO the key would be to simultaneously seize numerous mutually supporting bases on the Southern (true) Sumatran coast immediately, using the surprise phase to have an "instant front."

If they are only going for one target, even if it's empty and falls easily, isolation seems a viable Japanese counter.

Status: offline 		I'm also in July 43, so it is nice to compare our situations. Like you, I now have the Tojo (but not the C model), George, and Frank available. They often share the same AF. I love the ability of the George to bring down the 4e bombers. I often set them at 15k, but have yet to find a 'magic' altitude for the Frank and Tojo. What have you found to be the best set ups for these planes??

Not exactly sure of the target of the enemies operation yet...

The air battles are exhausting our aircraft . The fact that some of his aircraft can sweep at 42k feet is the killer. About 3-4 days from now we will be able to counter with a mass of Franks... until then we want to fight, we are loosing a lot of aircraft, but only about 20 aircrew, which is sustainable.

Indicators and Warnings
Multiple TF off Port Blair Nth Sumatra. Hard to tell if Port Blair (Tony's view) or Sabang ( my view as it is the most dangerous to us) is the target.

There appears to be 3-4 fleet CV's and some CVE's this with what we have sunk (4 CV, 2 CVE) and the CVE detected in the Pacific is about all the key CV assets he could have.

Subs everywhere off Sabang, have pulled back the ASW Tf so the enemy CV forces don't sink them.

The quandry is solved, despite there being only two logical options, as usual the enemy choose the third!

Andrew has landed on all four of the islands in the chain from Port Blair to Sabang, and has split his CV forces into two to cover them.... see the image in the next post.

As you can see he has landed on the four islands, the landing forcese are engineer/BF heavy, with about a Bde of combat troops each. I'm not sure he understands the impact of having level 0(0) ports yet... they are very tough to resupply. His intent is clear though, to isolate Burma by sea and threaten the long coast of Malaya/Burma.

Our plan is to sweep with fighters, send a couple of small strikes from the land, mainly to tire the CVE force.

KB should then come in and hit the southern most forces at long range.

Next turn we will launch Naval strike to try and clean up what remains....

We have two divs at sea that can counter land if we wish to.

Well that is the plan!

Anyway here is China. We have him boxed in and keep the remaining airfields suppressed, gives our aircrew some experiance! We don't have enough force to advance. Supply was a problem a few weeks ago, but no longer. Looks like China needs about 20k in supply a week from Japan even when you own most of the place...

Has gone quiet. We had been seeing a bit of movement aroun the place, and was looking like it would be an area he would advance to. With the ops in The Indian Ocean this has gone quite, except the movement of forces to Groote Eylandt.

We have decent force (Air, Sea and land)in the area and aren't too concerned.

Off Map Tulagi and Lunga are major well developed and dug in bases.

He is mostly using Townsville.

What kind of strength do you have at Merauke and Port Moresby? I'm trying to gage what constitutes something more than a roadblock defence. I had 141 AV on Lunga and it was adjusted down to 55 behind level four forts and rough terrain, yet fell in one day.

Sounds like you were a bit unlucky... but did you have supply, how disrupted and decent leaders?

Merauke is 250AV behind level 6 forts.

PM is 380 AV (and dropping, we are starting to pull back a bit) behind level 6 forts.

Both have resonable units, PM has 2/3 of the 21st Div.

Bad weather in the AO and none of our land based air flew, and only about 1/2 of KB... the enemy has fled though (the torp in the CVE last turn probably gave the game away). We did get some minor ships, see below, for no loss, but the area is thick with subs...

So now Andrew has four islands, each with a Brit Bde, 2-4 US engineer units and BF. They are all level 0 ports, which will make them very problematic to supply. All are within range of our land based air, which despite the battles in central Burma are in reasonable shape (fighters) or good shape (bombers).

So now the battle will be on for us to interdict his resupply/build up, and him to advance in Burma so his Long Range bombers can hit our airfields. Should shape up into some really nice battles in the future!

The enemy tpt fleets have fled back towards Ceylon. The CV and CVE forces have joined up and are covering the withdrawel. There is no other movement detected elsewhere on the map.

The enemy is advancing on Shwebo. The plan to to make him prepare for Shwebo (which is mostly held by Armour and AT units, behind level 6 forts), then retire on the main defensive location of Mandalay. Our real intent is then to defend back in the jungle/rough... timing this move will be the challange!

Most of our air has moved south to prepare to attack the islands, and to recover. IJN airgroups are converting to Frank, some will remain Tojo IIC.

This shows the current situation with the strikes from KB noted, and our main airbases circled. We have three Air HQ supporting at Sabang, Chumpun, and one split in south Sumatra. Another air HQ 2-3 days away and a fith about 8 days away. We have two divs at sea that are capable of conducting counter landings. This means we can probably take one of the islands back at a time.
