As you can see they have put a nice hole in our LOC to Ankang. But we have enough supply to last for a couple of weeks, and the strategic reserves are alreading moving to help, and counter attack into their flank.

Eastern DEI Defences.

Darwin is badly banged up, and with PM and Merauke in our hands or the ight, and Boorme and Port Hedland on the left, we have sealed off this approach for a while.

Never the less we are building a network of supporting bases, with Kebndari as the hub.

On the right Boeala will become a major baser, we wnat to exploit the resorces and oil their while we can... and it protects one of the thrust lines to the Philippines.

Dili is already a level 4 airfield, and aircraft from there are trashing Darwin.

Koepang is obvious.

Once these bases are secure we will looking at a couple of depth supporting bases out of Allied medium bomber range. The engineers will then move to the rear and start preparing the next line of defence.

We don't expect them to use this thrust line any more... but we have the units here now, if we dig things in nicely then we can feel secure and focus elsewhere...

Here is the current situation in China.

After taking Ichang several large Chinese armies crossed the forests and attecked into the exposed left flank of our line to Ankang. They broke through in one location and about 5 days ago rounted an independant mixed Bde.

That force is now heading north, but is about to hit 600 AV in forts and forest...

We are counter attacking against a single corps with 1000 AV that are about to cross the river. The only thing that will upset us is the stack coming in from the left.

A lot of air is at Nanyang which is a well supplied level 6 airfield. The aircraft are used to help slow and break up the Chinese forces, and every now and then hit Sian.

We are also advancing in the far north in an effort to restict supply to the forces around Sian... it will be a long seige as the forces are fairly evenly matched.

Suva Falls!

The Chinese arebeaten back.

Subs

Lots of attacks, we damage a few, but sinking subs is very hard :(

Burma
Everything we have spare has moved to Lashio and the Chinese Border... we are thin on the ground. The first of the Port Blair regiments has arrived in Rangoon, the second is on the way and the third is at Sabang moving back to Medan ready to be moved over. The combat ships are gathering as well.

Over the last few turns they have been trying to break out of the swamps around Rangoon... we have been killing them...

Ground combat at 53,51 (near Bassein)

DEI

We finishing securing the central part of the island. Two regiments and Army Arty has arrived at Batavia. The Imperial guards are digging in at Bandoang. We have two div to take Batavia, which should be enough... we will know next turn as we are bombarding. We probably shipped one div too many to Fiji... we are operating on a shoe string in the DEI and Burma.

Fuel is moving to Singapore nicely, and is flowing with oil and resources to Haiphong, I didn't expect it to move as well as it has, having to rethink the movement of "stuff". We are very short tankers... over half are being used to ship fuel to the SWPAC.

Nth Australia
A CL/CA TF is again detected in the Timor sea (heading to Darwin?), we are sending out a CA TF from Koepang in an effort to intercept, and have put the aircraft on Naval attack.

Pacific

Mini KB continues to "tag" the convoy with the help of two CS TF. KB is in range of the Warspite (which is reported sunk during the turn... but we don't believe it yet) but bad weather stops it from attacking. Next turn KB will go past the Bb tf, then move onto the track of the large convoy full of juciy targets....

Oh and Suva falls :)

Ground combat at Suva (132,160)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 70648 troops, 929 guns, 641 vehicles, Assault Value = 2326

The 16th Recon Regt of ours is destroyed during the turn, so we have to buy it back.

Pago Pago goes to a level 4 airfield, and the island SE of Suva goes to a level 1 afld despite the port being bombed...

We are trying to work out if we have now in fact culminated... and are now looking for an easier target than Pago Pago. Our main problem is fuel... we still have another two months of campaigning but feel very extended.... there are also a couple of other targtes we would like to hit (including the B-17E operating out of Townsville, PM is 100% damaged, and it would be nice to catch them on the ground with a CA TF... just need the fuel...).

China
As planned we cross into their flanking force, which is nicely reinforced by another corps during the turn... but they are no match in the open for Japanese combat power supported by aircraft... We loose a lot of troops though as the units had a lot of disabled squads.

Ground combat at 84,46 (near Nanyang)

At the same time they try to break through our forces on the road to Ankang... as expected we held them and badly damaged them... they are now caught between these units, and will below on suply, with the ability to focus our airpower... not a great spoot to be.

Ground combat at 83,51 (near Wuchang)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 54871 troops, 268 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1838

If we can clean these units up we can then turn to focus on Sian.

The dot base north of Sian is taken by the aroured cars, they will now move to cut off the flow of material to Sian... not sure how long they will be able to hold...

Very happy again now in China, we are bleeding them (we are also being bled, but we have the supply to recover). Taking Sian is a long way away yet, but it is mostly (weakly) encircled now so supply will be a huge issue. This will limit their offensive ability.

Summery
The recent destruction of around two Allied divisions in the South Pacific has significantly improved our ability to maintain a strong resistance into 1944. Of our original strategic aims we have largely accomplished them, except for the destruction of the Allied air forces... this is disturbing, in particular for Burma/Sumatra.

However overall we are in a great position, and as long as we don’t stuff up the Allies will have a tough fight coming back.

Burma Theatre. We are relatively weak here, 2 divs in Burma and a div committed to the attack on Port Blair. This theatre is probably our greatest threat. We need another two div here... Akyab is now level 3 forts, with plenty of supply. It would be nice to get another regt in here. In the centre we are building airfields and forts as quick as we can.

Sumatra. Sumatra is now clear, but we lack forces for a coherent defence. This area concerns me as a potential allied counter attack zone... our only defence is to try and sink as much allied shipping as possible!

Java. Java is moving late but well so far... the question is what happened to the Dutch fighter squadrons?

East DEI. With Darwin neutralised this theatre doesn’t concern us that much, but we are digging in hard and have a useful range of minor units that will hold anything but a major attack.
SWPAC. Rabaul is a significant fortress, and while PM is neutralised the rest of the area is untouched. Tulagi is almost a level 4 airfield. We intend building a group of bases on Finschaven/Umboi Island to support PM. The line from Tulagi to Buna is our intended defence zone.
SOPAC. Largely ours we are trying to work out how much further we should push our luck. Pagao Pago is strongly held... we are thinking about going deep into the centpac instead...

CENTPAC. We are moving naval guard units in but little else.

NORPAC. We aren’t planning on moving forward here.

China. We are starting to move some forces into southern China now we have draw a lot of their forces north to Sian. Sian is being cut off... not sure if we will be able to take it. Because they safely pulled all their forces out of Loyang and Chengchow they have a lot of force...

Air force. Our air force is in good shape. Pilot training is improving our fighter forces, and we have a sufficiency of Zero, and are almost there with Oscar. Trying to get Tojo as soon as possible... Medium bombers are a problem, but Helens will soon come on in numbers (over 100).

Shipping. The ships that were damaged in the attack on Sorebaya are starting to come back on line... We are in good shape over all.

Industry. We need more tankers! Need to pull out all the AK’s that convert from Jun and get them in position... and not get them sunk! Otherwise we are happy with how things are going, but still getting used to where to get things from.

Well done indeed. It's hard to destroy the Allied air force if they don't come out to play.

One comment- I think your opponents were wise to abandon Chenchow and Loyang. These bases just can't be held on the open plains and the large armies garrisoning them at game start are better employed trying to hold the approaches Sian in more defensible terrain.

yes pulling out of those cities intact was a good move... sod it!

Today Andrew flew down to my local airfield and took my family for a joy ride in his aircraft, it was a beautiful day, I'm sure my son will remember being ath the controls of an aircraft for the rest of his life, Andrew thanks again!

26 March 1942
They launch a carrier raid in the gap between Tulagi and Noumea, and get two of our precious Ao's, while bad waether agin socks in our CV's :(

Subs
We badly beat up one of theirs.

Burma

they attack Lashaio with B-17, we claim 3.

DEI
Still waiting for troops to come up to Batavia... but they are now surrounded.

They sortie shipping out of Batavia and we sink a few AMc with a SCTF... good practice.

Pacific
Even though we were expecting them to raid they cam in at an angle we didn't expect, and hit a CM (moderatly damaged) and sank 2 AO and damaged a 3rd. We are close to Tulagi and so we have moved in fighters and bombers... an air HQ is 2 days away :(

This is they thing we feared would happen, but which we have't been able to do much about. It could have been a lot worse, this convoy has almost all out AO's in it carrying over 100k of fuel to Fiji...

There is no rush in Java, and would prefer massive odds to minimise our casulties.

Pacific

Our damaged AO makes Tulagi. An air flotilla and another BF will soon land at Tulagi, then their ability to raid in this area will be reduced. 45 Zero and a Daitai of Betty set up camp.

Just for something different weather impacts our CV ops, it also looks like they have used the weather to slip through our nets... so the direction of the 3 Cv groups (KB is in two at the moment) is changed.

China
No real action at all. But troops are dancing around each other at the moment.

Subs
We loose two damaged subs this turn. They were hit around Pago Pago and were limping home...

Burma
No change. Waiting on the last regiment and the engineers from Sumatra to arrive at Rangoon then the Port Blair invasion cancommence. An air flotiila is now leaving Japan to be based at Port Blair.

I forgot to reset the engineers at Batavia, it attacked and droped the forts by itself!

Boela is building nicely. It will act as a resource/oil gathering point and will be a key part of the defence.

Pacific

An enemy Cv Tf is spotted near Tarawa heading east... this probably is the brits that attacked near Tulagi... but our air forces are on aleart. It would be good if this force is heading East... it means we can cruiser raid the east coast of Australia...

70k in fuel will start unloading in Fiji next turn. The AO's are heading south to RV with the CV units which are starting to head home... we hit Gisborne in NZ in case there is something damaged there... But only half of KB.

This attack near Ichang didn't work out so good... ah well stalemate it is.

Tankers really are in short supply :( We are looking forward to the Jun upgrades of some cargo vessels to tanker configuration.

Burma

By this stage of the war as the Japanese you must assume that SIGINT is telling the enemy what you are doing, so the Port Blair attack shouldn't be a suprise. In addition Japanese Doctrine called for a close and distant covering force for any invasion... Therefore we sent in a SCTF "distant" force to the hex first with the invasion force and the "close" group combined.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Port Blair at 46,58, Range 5,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CA Mogami
CL Sendai, Shell hits 3
DD Oyashio
DD Akatsuki
DD Usugumo, Shell hits 1
DD Shirayuki
DD Hatsuyuki
DD Yugiri

Allied Ships

CL Marblehead
CL Caledon, Shell hits 1
CL Colombo, Shell hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Decoy, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Express
DD Fortune, Shell hits 2, on fire

In the end not a great result, except the invasion force got ashore unmolested... which, after all, is the point :)

Pre-Invasion action off Port Blair

5/14th Punjab Battalion
Port Blair RN Det

Defending units:
24th Infantry Rgt /1
5th Engr Rgt /1
41st Infantry Rgt /3
16th Infantry Rgt /3

All three regiments and engineers are ashore and will attack next turn. There is an Indian Bde, a Punjabi Bn and the starting det... the question is how dug in are they... they have been bettered for months from the air...

In a series of air attacks near Akyab we get a couple of aircraft and loose a couple... but they arent hitting Akyab itself yet, we may make level 4 forts yet...

DEI
No change.

Pacific

Bad weather again limits operatins and no strikes fly on Auckalnd.

Our Ao's have just about met up with the various CV groups.

We hit Vava'u again, will switch to ground attacks as the invasion force is two turns away.

China
The first of our additional units have arrived in the south... another couple of days and we should be able to attack...

Otherwise the place is now in stalemate, but we think we have pulled their reserves to the north and centre...

The tide is begining to turn and soon will be at ebb, so time to think and plan.

Overall we have done good. We have closed the Northern Australian Axis and the SWPAC Axis. They have shown not much interest so far in an Alutions approach.

That "just" leaves the Central Pacific, where they have been active and Burma.

This means they are limited ability to use mutual support and we can use interior lines to move stuff around.

So a Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats anaylsis...

Strategic.
S. Combat forces nicely concentrated with 8 div and all the CV in the South Pacific. Fleet is largley intact, airforce largely intact and pilot training has created a bit of depth of experiance.

W The Army and Navy are concentrated in the Pacific, Burma is relatively weak.
Fuel availability is limiting operations in the Pacific.

O With the forces we have concentrated we can attack Australia, NZ or continue to clear out the Pacific.

T Burma, the North Pacific and central pacific are the likely threat axis. Loosing a couple of tankers will really limit us.

Next a theatre by theare situation and analysis.

Burma
In general we are digging in nicely, but our overall troop numbers is only about 2 Div. The main force of around a Div is located in the jungle outside Lashio guarding against a large stack of Chinese.

We are keen to hold Akyab as long as possible as that limits their ability to hit targets with escorted strikes.

In the air a strong group will establish at Port Blair, around Rangoon and forward around Mandalay. We have around 200 fighters in the area and 100 netties. Chain Mai and Bangkok hold reseves of crews conducting training.

S We own the ground we intened to fight on and are digging in fairly well. We have a good variety of airbases with mutual support.

W Ground combat forces. Now that Port Blair has fallen an additional two regiments are available in Burma.

O Port blair gives us the opportunity to conduct air and sea strikes against thei lines of Communication into southern India.

T A large attack is the most dangerous threat, and Amphib is possible but very unlikely. An attack from China is probably the worst for us in the interim.

Key Information Requirements.

What allied units have been put into India (I.e Australian/ US) this helps us to understand a little what they may do. So far we have seen nothing...

What are the capabilities of the Chinese force on the border.

An active tactical air intelligence opperation is underway to detect build ups.

So far it looks like they are content to dig in in southern India and are not planning offensive operations any time soon...
