****!

How come I can't punch through the front of a JS-II with 88/71L from the Tiger 2!!! (6 shots)
and then the JS - II can then kill the Tiger 2 in 1 shot. I think it was a JS-II hmm maybe it was a JS-III but the pen tables still say I can get through that much armour.

Or does this have something to do with the armour sloping too?

Most definately. Hit angle, armor slope, armor quality modifiers etc etc play in. Oh yeah, and range! ;)

Hit alt+L during combat and check the combat.txt in the main directory afterwards. There you will see how the game calculates pen.

Check my thread in the AAR/DAR forum. I hit an IS-2 in the front turret and achieved a pen of 134. The corresponding armor thickness was in this case, after angles etc. were calculated, 136 mm. Ouch. 2mm short. The IS-2 then hit the Tiger on top of the turret since it (the IS-2) was standing on a hill. No need to say, Tigers are quite vulnerable to head bonking. :p

The 88/L71 is a great gun, but the IS-2s features a 122 mm gun. Enough to kill a Tiger II in any case. You need to be careful with your cats.

I believe the JSIII incorporated armour sloping improvements over the JSII ... the troops nicknamed it the 'Pike' because of it's pointed front glacis. If you look at a pic of the JSIII it looks remarkably like a modern MBT with the ballistic armour and a turret that looks like an upside down frying pan. IIRC the JS family of tanks carries a small ammo load though, and I believe it had some reliability problems. The T-44 became the forerunner of the postwar Soviet tank family instead ... Still its a very scary beast indeed :D

Quite a lot, especially if you look at the turret..I recall some fierce discussions about what would be the correct slope to be used in the OOB.. :)

An interesting comparison: the JS3 and the Pz IV h/j in the background.

I believe this is at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.

Yeah, that's APG. I have several (relatively poor quality) photos I took there when I was working for DOD back in '95.

Thanks, CCB. I thought the IS-3 was a lot bigger... :p
