I did find out that the Germans are by no means dead in my other game. But he found out that this isn't the old soviet army anymore. He broke thru and I counterattacked furiously.

Turn 39 is finished and despite having an army the size of Godzilla I am still very nervous of German ability (that is coming from earlier in the game i am sure) We traded blows for several hexes we both want in the North and it was 2-1 me in the end.

Losses up to now.

Bryansk to Crimea, finally took Dnepropetrovsk after 3 weeks of assaults. If he had broken thru again(which he didn't) I would have pulled back to the river.

The more I see these AARs the more I realize that the Germans are totally fracked in 42. Their great strongpoint is powerful assault infantry and after the first winter, those boys are royally immasculated.

There is no freaking way that a German player can reproduce the 42 campaign if he starts in 41. No way. Not possible. Will NOT happen.

HAS not happened in any AAR so far. Carnage is doing the best and he's WAY WAY WAY behind the historical schedule.

If German infantry can't gain more combat effectiveness back after the 41 winter, it's pointless to play the 41-45 game. Just pointless.

Although I tend to agree with the sentiment, I am going to wait till the end of the first summer before I claim it is totally screwed as in my other game the Germans have just surrounded about 15 divisions of infantry and although his offensive is limited in scope, it is going thru my lines in an area I wasn't expecting, Northwest front where the ground it swampy and forested. I doubt he can cause me enough looses to turn the tide(could probably lose a million men and still be fine), but the Germans are far from dead in 42.

If you are talking about Haudrauf's game, he's farked. Totally. He can't do squat against you. His infantry are barely a 1/3 better than yours and he has 1/2 the numbers. Do the math.

if this was just about math we wouldn't even have to play. I do agree he can't do lasting damage to me but he can make things very bloody for me coming the other way.

I must be careful because I read both sides on this one, but yes, he's done some damage. Look at the forces it required him to commit to doing so. Nuff said.

Turn 41, still snowing out and it looks like my opponent finally decided to conserve his forces and pull them back. Had not attacks this turn except for one position which I kept. Here are the losses and overview of the front.

There is very little action going on due to the mud so I am going to pass on doing any updates until the last mud turn, when i will lay out my plans and what I think will happen. Seeing as the German player has only 2.6 million men right now I cannot foresee to much action on his part. Think he should dig in and counter me to be honest.

It is turn 43 right now and map looks like it was for turn 41 One thing I did do was convert about a dozen armored corps and they are under good armor commanders and put in reserve.

Maybe this is something Trey or Pavel can respond to: historically, beginning 1942, were the experience levels for German units still high, like mid 1941?  I suppose this is sort of answered by whatever numbers are plugged in for the 1942 scenarios but I haven't played any of them.

From what I am reading it seems the Germans are experiencing experience hits when the men lost during the winter are coming back. Although the Germans did lose experienced personnel the loss was not as severe until late 42 and into 43 (at least from how I read the history books) and it may be a little to severe and needs to be tweaked a little bit. And no amount of experience will make up for being outnumbered 2.5 to 1 starting in the Summer of 42.

Looks like you're refighting the turf West of Smolensk. That can only mean he is in an impossible situation because you're getting stronger and he is getting weaker. He won't even get as far as he did the first year before you start pushing him back again.

Edit: meant to be a reply to Miller41.

He has been clobbered by the upgrade bug and the replacement experience bug. His army is a shell of it's former self. His experience levels in most units are probably not much better than the Romanians. His morale is higher though. His infantry are basically useless in the attack.

I am speaking from experience not from his AAR.

They were still high. 70+

The numbers you find in the 42 scenario are indeed the benchmark we're looking at.

As a rule of thumb, you can look at the yearly national morale norms for each army and use that as a basis for determining the intended result. Right now, pre patch, German experience in 42 is not meeting those norms. This is a problem. Hopefully it's been corrected, although we may have to tweak things further.

I actually think we are playing this more for fun now than to completion. Although I cannot speak for Belphigor 100% I believe he does realize this is a no win situation for him and he is going to get bull rushed this summer.

Apologies for taking so long to post, had a back injury and am out of work for several days so sitting is difficult. We are on turn 47, the beginning of May 42 and the german player decided to stand of defense. Me being who I am decided to attack where I thought I could back him off and did break thru in one area. It is a limited one and i have a feeling his armor will beat it down but I got a HQ to retreat so that is something. Am massing all my guards divisions for conversion in June behind the lines.

Here are the losses so far after my turn

Kursk area, I may get attacked here as he has armor right near the flank of my advance. My attack here may be prodding a sleeping dragon.

Jeez, you still have security regiments wandering around?  I would have disbanded them by now, except for ones guarding the Finn line.

Are we looking at something like what happened in WiR? Where we will have to have a rule that the first blizzard the Russians won't attack, to make it more balanced?

Eh?? No. I am pretty certain the developers will do their best to fix this thing Germans should get some... AND still launch some sort of offensive on 1942 (as opposed to an all-attack along the whole front ).
