Here is the situation. We're the Sluken and our homeworld is marshy swamp. However I just noticed that we don't start with the marshy swamp tech already researched. Is that working as intended?

So I started researching it and we're about 35% of the way done. Now my scouts find another marshy swamp world and the adviser says to send a colony ship there?! So how can I colonize it if I have not finished researching that tech? I'm confused.

I *think*(I'm still in my first game) you can only colonize your native type.  So, if Marshy Swamp is your native type, that is all you can colonize.  The Marshy Swamp colonize tech it useless to you except to unlock the next techs in the tree I think.  I'm guessing this is how it works, I'm playing as Human, and I can colonize Continental because its my races native type, even though I have not researched the Continental colony tech yet.

Yeah that is what I don't get.  Why do I have to research something I already know how to do?

Continental planets can be colonized by EVERYBODY who have the first colonization module researched (which happens to be, everybody xD)

And yeah, if your race has a enviroment as "native one" that's not Continental, you can colonize it, even if it matches or not with your current tech.

i.e: Ackdarians can colonize ocean planets/moons, Ugnari ice planets/moons, Shandar volcanic planets/moons, and so on.

So, if you send a Colony ship to that Marshy Swamp world, it'll get colonized, as it's Sluken's native enviroment.

It worked like that in the original, in the expansion you have to research the tech to colonise that type of world. Its a bit wierd with the expansion but that's they way the game works atm.

OK at the risk of belaboring the point then if marshy swamp is my native planet type why do I have to research that?  Why isn't it already researched for my race when the game starts?

Well, the tech tree is a pretty straightforward one (at least in the non-expansion version).

You have to research A to get to B, even if A is completely useless for you (as the Slukens, they don't need the tech for Marshy Swamp colonization per se but they need it to get to better Habitation tech)

Yeah I understand they need it to get to more advanced techs.  I don't understand why the don't have it at the start.  Anyway, thanks for the help.

I think we are getting confused between original and RotS here.

I was talking about RotS, if any of the beta testers who have more experience can explain to us how it works, that would be great

Researching it indicates that you now know how to colonize Marshy Swamp planets regardless of who is doing the colonizing. Even though you can live on them natively, until you've research that you don't know how to get other races to live there effectively. It's an increased understanding of colonization and adaptation.

You can always colonize your native type without researching it, but you can't progress past that or trade knowledge of how to colonize that type without researching it further.

- Erik
