Have to say the AI is doing a remarkable job.

I had thought that it would be easy to play as the Russian. I was worried the first few turns as the AI doesn't get the perfect encirclements that a human would construct. But the AI has kept pressing. By turn 10 I'm doing OK but then the AI encircles half my southern front.

This is after I clawed a supply path out of the trap but face it, those troops in the pocket are toast.

Heh, it's good to see the AI doing this.

Wow! I've seen the AI making small encirclements, but this is really good. What impressed me then I saw the Russian AI finally break my front down south, they released something like 10 tank brigades in the open, and were heading towards Nikolayev (sp?). It went hunting for my airfields and HQs and even attempted to encircle some panzer divisions. It also nearly encircled half a Romanian army which could barely move in the blizzard...

Interesting. What settings are you using? I am on turn 36 and I haven't seen the AI make too many large encirclements of this nature, although it did bag several divisions on turn 2 around Lvov.

I am more impressed by the AI's defensive skills - maintaining a cohesive front and fighting for every hex, but pulling back from dangerous salients to shorten its line.

Maybe the AI moves into empty hexes when on the offensive and thus exploits holes in your front. Maybe the same programme which makes the AI hold the line well, ends up making it bag our units.

I agree. It is very nice to play against a competent AI.

I'm using normal settings.

I'm sure I could have played a little better. This is my first game out of the box and I haven't been agonising over trying to play perfectly.

But my line seemed to holding so I tried to stand in there for another week. Suddenly I was surrounded!!

I managed to get a little supply into the pocket on the next turn 11 so my troops fight on. But the end is near.
