This is from my current game vs. the Soviet AI (on Normal). The mud will most likely hit within the next two turns, so here's a quick rundown of how NOT to do it...

As you can see from the screenshots, I've begun (several turns ago) to construct fortified lines behind the front (although the fragmented mess I'm experiencing barely deserves that title). I control the majority of hexes in Leningrad and Moscow, but have stalled short of controlling them all.

In the south, I took Rostov last turn, and have decided to make the Don my stop line for the winter. Sevastopol is besieged, but will probably not fall until next year.

Overall loss rate is about 3.000.000 Red Army troops to all causes to about 400.000 Axis.

BTW, this is what happens when you ride your Panzer divisions hard (tank strength this turn):

My infantry is in fairly good shape (for now) but a few turns of mud and frost, along with burgeoning partisans and SLOW rail repair will sap them quickly.

Did you start off with a very specific goal ( eg, take Leningrad by such-and-such date ) or did you dive towards Moscow hard and adjust your line of attack depending upon how the AI responded ?

Impressive advance, especially with AGS, but I'm guessing you're not going to like your supply situation in the mud turns.

Also: it seems you've found a bug, a routed fortified zone.

Actually, what I did was pour as much speed on as possible. I didn't go for creating big pockets, just brushing aside as many Soviet units as I could and storm forward. I've destroyed nearly 200 Red division equivalents up till this point.

At the moment, I'm three turns further into the game, and waist-deep in the Rasputitsa.

I've eliminated the remaining Soviet garrison in Leningrad as well as the last enemy forces on the isthmus, but other than that, I'm concentrating on setting up as much of a frontline as possible, retreating behind rivers, setting up fortified lines, etc.

The enemy has a huge concentration of forces in the north and centre, but not too much in the south. If it gets very bad, I'm toying with the idea of pulling out reserves from Army Group South and sending them north. Plenty of good river lines for the infantry to hold down south.

Ummmm.... the rivers freeze and lose their defensive value after 3-4 turns.

I know. But that gives time for more defences to be built further to the rear. My front is so far forward, I can afford to give up some terrain without compromising the situation.

Is there any sort of " extra bonus " for eliminating Leningrad ( or Moscow, or Stalingrad for that matter ). Some games give give the Germans a morale boost, or the Russians a morale detriment, etc. and so forth. I don't have the manual with me and was just curious.

Terminus did you outrun your supplies to the point where you were in a real bind? Or have you been good up until the weather ruins you?

Not really bad, no. Once the mud hit, most of my front south of Lake Ilmen went into "isolated" status, though.

Could you give us a SS of the Losses for both sides up to now?
Seems like you just pushed into Leningrad by force, instead of cutting supply first, so what shape is your units up north in now after that?
Im currently at turn 13 in Axis GC so very interesting this...
Thanks.

I did not just push into Leningrad outright. I took two of the Leningrad hexes almost immediately, and then it took a 6- or 7-turn siege to break the last defences.

My troops are in fairly good shape, since I only used about 4 divisions of AOK 18 for the fighting itself. I've had them on Refit since the last resistance collapsed two turns ago and they're up to about 90% strength. The biggest problem for Army Group North is the same as for everybody else: no reserves.

The loss rate is about 3.200.000 Soviet to just under 500.000 Axis troops lost to all causes.

This happens if a newly placed fortified zone is contacted by an enemy unit before the Logistics Phase.

This is actually the second blizzard turn, but there was no activity on the first. Here are the most memorable engagements (there was some inconsequential stuff at Novgorod and in the Crimea, but nothing of note):

My general plan is to make the enemy bleed as much as I can, while preserving my forces and especially avoiding encirclements. No terrain is worth holding if I lose a corps or an army.
