Hi guys, I am a fan of 4x space games and this game has caught my eye. Now, few questions if you don't mind:

1. Is Matrix the only place where I can buy a hard copy of this game? Is it possible to buy a bundle with the expansion?

2. Does the har copy also contain any of the updates?

3. Are d/loaded updates all inclusive or do I have to d/load each one separately?

Thanks for answers guys.

P.S. How would you compare this game ot Gal Civ2?

1. Matrix is the only retailer. There is no bundle price atm.

2. I have no idea about this one since I always go digital. Save the planet etc.

3. Updates are inclusive, yes.

As to GalCiv2 comparison, they feel like two totally different games to me. GalCiv simplifies a lot of concepts where as DW goes for in-depth, complex presentation like the civilian economy. So if you like that sort of stuff, DW is your game.

It's also available from NWS Games:

I've used them in the past, and been very happy with their service.

Curious, I was under the impression that DW was Matrix Games exclusive.

Looks like they're selling boxed versions, at least the price matches the Matrix store.

Edit: Actually RotS seems to be cheaper at the other store, $24.99 vs $29.99, assuming they're boxed copies.

Another question. Is the expansion ROTS worthwile purchase? Does it bring many improvements to the game or is it more an addition of two new races?

Not to spoil it, but the two new races are not even playable. However, that said, the expansion makes the entire game like 2 times better. It is a really well done expansion and while I personal have a fairly large wishlist, I find that it has easily become one of my favorite space empire games.

Like caerr said, they're really different games. GalCiv 2 is for the most part a Civilization variant, while Distant Worlds feels like someone took the better ideas from MOO3 and Space Rangers and mixed them together.

Also, the expansion is very much worth it.

Can anyone point me to a section or a website where I can find background stories on all the races withing the game?

I remember reading MOO3 and SOTS forum sections on the races and the background story on the galaxy and I have to say this was one of the main reasons that made me uy those games.

Its close to two different games. Even if the original DW was already on eye level with any other 4x game I ever played
I would not even look back after playing the expansion.
The areas where ROTS performs brilliantly are often those where DW felt a bit unfinished.

there are two know sources for this that i know of but both of them very old and not up to date: one is a wiki for DW that someone attempted at one point. The other is a thread on this forum from the days DW was not even out and Erik baited us.

I can find them if I struggle but as I've said they're old and not much help now. If you want I can email you the relevant portions from the galactopedia pertaining to the races, this would be up to date

1. matrix is the only retailer

2. the hard copy should be the latest version. If I am not mistaken, Matrix burns the copy to DVD upon order (Matrix staff can tell you this for sure).

3. it depends, but I beleive they are all inclusive for DW. Since i've updated as soon as the new ones become available, I can't answer this one for sure.
