Nice picture.

Does anyone know if the Japanese ever finished their Helicopter/VTOL Carrier?

Read the ENGLISH entry and those CVLs seem to be quite capable. Pretty nice addition to the Japanese Fleet. Thanks for the hot link.

Terminus,

Calm. I was just following links from the english page of the JMDSF and copied/pasted the link without realizing that it reverted back to Japanese.

They're potentially capable. The Maritime Self Defence Force is just as cash-strapped as everybody else.

Wonder if they named them Ise and Hyuga in "honour" of their mutant forebears?

Well the Royal Thai Navy has an aircraft carrier themselves, HTMS Chakri Naruebet. The ROK Navy has bought the Dokdo class of Amphibious ships. So there is a belief to some in the defense industry there has been a minor carrier arms war in the Pacific.

The Australian Navy are also building 2 Canberra Class LHDs, so that is somewhat true. Although most sources report that the Thai carrier, almost never leaves port, apart from a few half-day trips out to sea.

Probably there is more of an arms race, when it comes to subs, with Australia building 12, ROK building another 12, Thailand building at least 1, Malaysia just purchased 2, Indonesia is looking to buy 3 Kilos and then there is China, with all their subs as well.

Australia building 12 subs is a somewhat optimistic statement.

To clarify the situation for our overseas readers, the figure of 12 was listed in the 2009 White Paper. No meaningful design work has yet occurred, no funding has yet been allocated, no industrial upgrading for their construction has occurred, no introduction into service date announced etc etc etc. Some would argue that the announcement was only a political aspiration intended primarily for political effect with little regard given to practical considerations.

Generally speaking I'd second that. I think WWII saw the pinnacle of warship design.

They are ugly by way of having way too many flat panels and surfaces which of course reduce the radar signature. I would certainly trade survivability for looks ;)
But they do look really ugly.

Age of sail ships had a certain regal look about them.
WW1 ships looked like they conveyed power and domination of the surrounding seas.

But I agree WW2 was the pinnacle.

Well, according to the wikilink you posted, those ships are indeed named after their (in)famous WW2 forebears. Check 'Name'-part of that wiki.

In the link (the one not in english) there appears to be a flat top with something loaded behind the helicopter carrier. It seems too small to be a US CV but it sure appears to have planes on it. I can't tell with the resolution.

If you're talking about this picture the CV directly behind is most likely CVN-73 USS George Washington since it's based in Japan. The half deck on the right side of the pic is probably a LHD or some other gator navy vessel.

Here is a listing of all the 7th Fleet Forces home ported in Japan
So you see the JMDSF Hygua, the USS George Washington, and the USS Essex. Along with a mix of Japanese and USN surface forces.
