i think it would be a great wrinkle for both players if the weather was somehow off schedule by a week or 2 or 3-wouldnt it be great to have the programmed weather but maybe have an option to throw it off a few weeks. Unfortunately both players can now plan for the instant snow/mud/frost arrives and plan their ENTIRE strategy around it. I think there should be an option in the game setup to keep your programmed weather with a 3 week flux/variable on when the actual programmed changes take effect. This gaming the weather game by the exact turn irks me Throw it off a few weeks (just a few and Im not talking about mud in the summer wrecking an entire offensive-Im talking the weather we already know that is coming, being either delayed or accelerated by a few turns) and the game will get better

I like that idea.

"Random" weather is a bit, well, too random for my tastes and when I read "I now have to get my men back because the mud will start next turn" that makes me cringe.

I'd love to see an option for "historical" weather with 2-3 weeks variation.

I like it. :) Agreed it would be a good option to have in game preference section. "historical weather with variance"

OTOH, I don't think weather should be a complete surprise even when 'random' or with variance.  They would have some forecasting abilities, so maybe if they had a 1-turn warning, say a "Next turns weather is = X" along with the random/variable weather would be good.  Even the forecast could have some uncertainty, say a message in the logistics phase log that says "60% chance of Blizzard, 40% chance of snow forecast", or whatever the probabilities are for a given time of year.

yah nothing to radical but just enough, with a only few turns variance, even with a forecast in your message-I think would be fun

Who are we kidding here? The reason the weather is hard coded even with the variable rule is that in fact the germans never did fully recover from the effects of the worst early Russian winter sense Napoleon. They fought on for 3 more years but the loss of experienced men and loss of equipment doomed any real chance for a German victory barring a couple of bad moves by the Russian high Command which any good game player will not do.
On the other hand having a rule that lets the Germans have the winter clothing and equipment could tilt the game the other direction and they might have even pulled of a victory in the first two years. Its just that is hard for new players to learn how to deal with that winter with his troops wearing summer uniforms. Even if you pull back and save the mobile forces the loss of ground, and infantry, and supplies is hard for new players to deal with.

the thread is about players on both sides knowing what the weather exactly will be every turn out when they start the game/  The thread is about changing that absolute certainty of knowing the weather by just a few turns +/-  Nothing about winter gear or a rule "about germans having winter clothing and equipment" thou there is that thread which you are quite active in, just above this one

This is what we need, so we can have a little mud all year round, only in patches like in real life, so as not necessarily to close down a whole section of front for a week. Anything else is a fudge-
