Larger planes.

I'd hate to see them take evasive action with that kind of deck load!

looks like a disassembled C-47 towards the rear, and maybe a B-26?

Going from l to r it looks like a B26, C47, PV1 or 2, then the rest are Cats. I can't tell if it's just some splotch on the photo in the area of the C47/PV1 or another plane also looks tobe possibly something in front of the 1st Cat. I'm surprised the Cats aren't flying unless this is a post war going home type photo

Odd to have a B-26 on deck.  She was commissioned in January 1944 and didn't leave the Pacific until after the war (when she was decommissioned).  The B-26 was gone from the Pacific theater long before she was finished.  Maybe it's a picture from her shakedown cruise in which they on an aircraft transport exercise or transporting hulks around the west coast while in work up?

Is this how the fleet carriers got replacement planes?

The USMC and USN used a version of the B-26 as a target tug throughout the war.

Yes, only they'd have numerous navy types on board (VR squadrons) & would fly off the needed plane or unload it at port & on it's merry way to the CV that needs it.

A number of the CVEs were used as ferries, and the larger fleet carriers would also cram as many planes in/on as they could when they were returning from stateside overhauls.
