Hi Guys,

According to the stats here it's over two years since I last posted anything.

I can believe that, what with real life getting in the way of my gaming and being involved with the Great Delve war (Eve On-line for those not familiar with the term) for three years or so when I am 'playing' on my computer.

But things have changed, as they do, and I have a bit more time to giving over to scratching my strategy itch.

So, along with saying 'Hi' again I'd like to ask a couple of questions, if I may

First, has a replacement for the Steel Panthers series ever been done? This is my all time favorite, I just love the 20th C. Company-Battalion level gaming it covered. Small enough that you can get attached to your leaders, big enough that you can 'play' with all of the 'toys'. I am aware of the Combat Mission games, but for some reason, they left me feeling a bit 'Blahh!'. Not a bad game at all, but just didn't hit all the boxes that SP did.

Next, I am soon to get an iPad or similar, I was just wandering if anybody knows if there is anything worth while in the way of strategy games available for the new tablet computers

Thanks in advance, and I hope that this is the first of many post

Wyke/Dave

The new Combat Mission is looking damn fine. A must buy for me as I love my tactical games. There is also Squad Battles and for Matrix Panzer Command Ostfront is due out soon.

Unfortunately no
There are many gamers, including me, who really would like to see an updated version of this game, and this question pops up every now and then. As far as I know, absolutely nothing is done with it.
Then again, Duke Nukem is about to being released, who would've thought that eh? It's been 10 years or so in the making LOL. So never say never. But chances are small I'm afraid.

There are however mods out there that do update the SP series significantly; http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Camo_Workshop/WW2/WW2_page.html
Here's another link;  http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Camo_Workshop/WW2/WW2_page.html

Really ashame though, I enjoyed that game tremendously.

Steel Panthers World at War by Matrix was a huge improvement of the Steel panthers game and best of all it's free.  Nothing new has been done as a new game but rather overhauls of steel panthers system.  Camo workshop stuff isn't bad but personally I didn't like it as much as World at War.  I know it's very popular so it is a mater of taste...  Try both and see which you like.

Yeah I 2nd this ^ it's just the wait that is driving me/us crazy! As far as them working on the ipad I have no clue. I hope eventually everything moves to small portable devices as a netbook is still just a bit too big and it's not very powerful either.

Thanks for the replies guys. I still have SP on my lap top, both the Matrix Version and Camo workshop's. But I do find both are more and more unplayable on my main PC (Strange graphics glitches, failing to recognize mouse clicks and the like)

I do find it a bit odd that this seems to be a popular area of war gaming, both in the historical and the scale period yet it seems to be overlooked almost totally by games developers, who seem to either focus on small squad level shooters (mainstream) or the Grand opera total theater strategy games (strategy game devs.

A re-vamp of SP? No, I know we all have a soft spot for the game, but it's old and more then past its sell by date. But son of SP? taking the best (In my case the best is the flexibility) and drag it kicking and screaming into the 21st C. Also, we often see post, either here or in the more mainstream computer press that the turn based strategy game is dead. No it will never die, it's a style of gaming in it's own right (Not all of us are twenty somethings with reactions like greased lightening) as many players like to sit back and think about things.

Changing the subject somewhat, I would have thought that good quality turn based strategy games would also be ideal for being developed for the new tablet based PC too? Yes, I know that they can play some pretty impressive games, but they don't tell you that doing so simply sucks the life out of the batteries, which would be no good for me as I make my weekly trip from the north of england to London.

I hope that there will soon be something of a Renaissance of traditional turn based games, and if that is the case, will hope even harder that there might be a new turn based company/battalion level 20th C game in there for me to drool over!
