air bases question - 2/2/2011 1:32:31 AM

Hi, my luftwaffe airbases, specifically those with 2+ airgroup units, are showing things like: "support/need: 250/496" in their detail window. I'm in May 1942 in the 41-45 CG, and havent worried much about this up until now when around 30-40% of the bombers are damaged in most bases, specially in the south. I've been moving around AGS fliegerkorps a bit, since I attacked Krimea after the blizzard (the russians almost reached Dnepropetrovsk) and now I am slowly advancing on Voroshilovgrad during the mud season. Now those airbases have reached their destination in support of AGS advance, and are positioned in railheads, I have also set the % required to fly at 75%(unless a important fight gets underway), so I hope they can do some refitting in the next turns.

So the basic question is: Should I retreat more groups to the national reserve? and how does the support/need impacts their performance and repair capabilities?

Thanks in advance

Won't the HQs lend a hand support wise as well, assuming they're within range? (Forget if it's 5 for support too, or simply command range)

I had a quick look at one of my Russian airbases.

Your airbase has 250 support squads (air base personnel)

Because of attached air groups up to 9

You may need up to 500 support

I presume under supported airbases means the aircraft arent repaired as quick

From the manual

Air base units will have a better chance of
repairing damaged aircraft if they have more support squad ground elements assigned than
their support need (section 7.2.2.1).

So I guess you should air transfer some planes when they just arent repairing to under utilised airfields.

Yes I'm pretty positive with that, actually always try to keep fliegerkorps HQs pretty close to their airbase units (1-3 hexes), also within 15 hexes of the Luftflotte HQ, and would say if has to do with airbases moving during the turn for them to repair more but I can not say for sure. I think this (the number of planes repaired) can roughly be known by checking the OOB screen info regarding your air power (same for the other branches of the armed forces actually). And that's what I usually do. Last turn I didnt move the airbases in AGS sector and they seem to have repaired more planes than in previous turns. Of course it counts a lot the player's agresiveness in his/her use of the airforce.

In the case of the Germans the fliegerkorps HQs have some 500 spare support squads (as their own need for them is 0- see detail window). So first thing I thought this would go for helpling attached airbases (until they are all spent in which case some air groups wouldnt get all the support that they need), I tried to find it in the rules (sections 8 or 16 but didnt find it).

For the record, on the 7th of May of 1942 my airforce stands at 3472 (3113 operative) and the soviet airforce is 13510 (11396 operative). Sometimes they get 700 fighters and 200 bombers in ground defensive support role. Is this natural? They cause huge losses on the ground attacking germans on those ocasions (even if the defending soviets are routed on the ground).

I have seen some huge numbers of Russian air force. Remember, you, the German, are hit with a ton of withdraw. They get to keep theirs mostly.

I have about 800 FW190 sitting in my pool making me cry because I have no more air groups outside my dive bombers that can use it. But my 109 units are sucking hind end.

Ok. About the FW190, I've just transfered one air group using them from the NR to an airbase. Have 15-20 air groups in the NR and I dont know if I should put all, some or none in my airbases for the upcoming offensive that should begin in 1-2 months. Best should be having as many birds as posible, but if that overloads the bases...
