I downloaded the older free War in the East some years ago and it struck me as a partly done new version because it did vary some from the game that came before. I was wondering if there is a PDF file of the manual or rules for that free version.

Just feeling a bit sentimental on a cold snow night outside.

Its here on the Matrixgames site. The manual and several editors are included in the zip. But your going to need DOSbox to get it to run.

100 posts in eleven years...Im getting too chatty.

I am still playing WIR, the user scenario 'Patriotic War 1942' at the moment, in tandem with WiTE and it still is a great game. The PDF Manual is still ver. 1.0 and has never been updated, but the readme attached shows all the changes since Matrix took over from ver. 2.0 up until ver. 3.3.

The PDF is too big for the forum, but it should be in your WIR download (warrussia.pdf), if not, PM me an email address and I can send it direct.

If you want to get really nostalgic, there is 'Western Front', issued before WIR. I have a version with graphics updated to match those of WIR 3.3 (the original graphics were very basic), an editor to remove some of the restrictions on the German side and revised D-Day scenario with updated OOB.

XP might run it, but not Vista or 7.

Well I am not sure. Right now I have two systems that I would like to put on a KVM switch but the KVM has only a female VGA connector and my monitor is an HDMI connection and I have never heard of a male VGA/female HDMI connector. So some time soon I will download the old game but am going through the manual for this game then playing the tutorial, then the shorter games and by that time the game will be patched to a more stable game (I Hope)

I am running WIR and Western Front, in Vista and Windows 7, using DOSbox with DOSShell front-end downloaded from the same website. I have been using 'Carrier Force' and 'Third Reich PC' on earlier XP and Vista systems, although I haven't transferred them to the Windows 7 system yet, but I will give them a try.

as soon as I got WitE, i grudgingly got rid of WiR.
Speaking of older games did anyone get into Jagged Alliance 2?
