Another vote for Battlefield Academy as a beginner.

There are many others to choose from for the next level.  On a grand scale, Decisive Campaigns Warsaw to Paris isn't overly difficult to learn but it's definitely on a larger scale.

Oh! And for some ancients fun, give Field of Glory a try. It's only a bit more to learn than Battlefield Academy.

Anytime. I am always glad to help those educated(oxymoron) in the British school system.

I am looking to buy a good introductory turn based war game from Matrix Games. I have tried RTS games, but my preference is the turn based game. Suggestions?

Thank you
Fred

I started on Risk followed by Diplomacy, before moving onto more complex stuff, which I then failed to understand and couldn't play. But then I'm a bit of a thicky, having been educated in the British school system.
