But still sometimes it makes me wonder who on earth anybody could find it funny to cheat on a game like this. Psychologically at least interesting I think. Is that guy doing this out of a habit? Not to steer people to go read the WitE forum, but I've seen one thread there concerning a massive PBEM scam artist already. Giles-something. Apparently, and I don't have the game or really understand the mechanics of this, WitE uses a new Slitherine server (Slitherine is the firm Matrix merged with recenlty) to expedite PBEM match-ups and turn delivery mechanics. Apparently though it also reduces the amount of interaction players have with each other outside of the turns themselves, unless they take measures to find each others' e-mail. Also apparently it is possible for one player to muck with the game settings in a very significant way and not be easily caught. So this Giles-person made his Germans uber-powerful in reinforcements, fortification, morale, leadership etc.-type settings, and proceeded to kick his Soviet opponent around like a tin can. (Although he also suffered terrible losses despite his tricks, showing that he's really a poor player.) When his opponent went and looked at what he'd done he found that it's not easy to bail on a game without going through the moderators. Anyway, you can read the saga yourself. I may have some details wrong. But I thought it was interesting since these types of centrally-managed servers are probably the future for Matrix PBEM games. Hmm, that is very interesting. Is the general purpose of using such servers to make it easier for players to run PBEM games ?
