Ok, so I found a semi abandoned colony ship. It has 10 million insectoids in the hold. I see in my expansion page that I can now colonize desert planets. A couple of noob questions:

I take it the reason the desert planets now show up as expansion possibility is due to the aquired colony ship. If I colonize one planet with the ship, all of my other 'normal' colony ships will not be able to colonize the desert planets? Will the planet colonized be my race or the race of the cargo.

If I retire the aquired colony ship, will I gain the tech to colonize the desert planets (or was this capability just due to the insectoid aliens)? What happens to the 10 million aliens in the colony ship if I retire the ship.

Just got the game last week and have been slowly peeling the onion and enjoying each layer as I get further into the game.

You'll only be able to colonise one desert planet, and it will be with the race in the ship.

I've never retired a colony ship (too useful) but if it works like retiring any other ship you may get some technology boost, but almost certainly not enough to give you colonise desert planets unless you are already well on the way researching that. If you do retire it I assume the potential colonists will just disappear, but I don't know for sure.

Welcome onboard, it's a great game!

no, your normal colony ships will still not be able to colonize desert planets....until this tech is researched
the colony will be of that race and they will be able to build colony ships for desert planets....but only after they reach a 100mil pop

you'll not gain the tech if you scrap it, you'll gain some tech points that will speed up research in one of the bracnhes containing the new techs from the ship....the aliens will die

Actually, it should be about 450-500mil before you can build colony ships if mois memory serves correctly.

Whenever I colonize a planet with an alien race I generally set the taxes on it to 0 in order for it to grow as quick as possible.  I'm pretty sure your bonus from that race depends on how many of them you have, plus the ability to colonize new planet types.  You want those planets growing as quickly as possible.

100M you say? Hmmm... seems like I've messed it up to something else that is 450Ms. My bad.

from the pedia

"When the alien inhabitants of your new colony grow sufficiently large (500 million population) then they can also build colony ships and colonize worlds of their native planet type. This can allow your empire to colonize new planet types without necessarily performing the normal colonization research."

i think 100M is the threashold to gain that race's bonuses
so all hail J's memoir.....he was spot on.

I have retired colony ships when it is a race I don't like, or a race I know will give me trouble down the road (IE they naturally hate my race or vice versa).

That's a nice way of referring to exterminating the bastids.
