Does anyone have any experience with this tank sim called World of Tanks?

It looks interesting but seems too good to be true if you read some of the reviews.

http://www.worldoftanks.com/about.html

(I did a search on this site and could not find anything ... either the search engine is not doing well or World of Tanks is not a good phrase to search on)

I've heard it's awesome. It's very popular among Polish Paradox community. Couple of folks looks like already addicted.

I think the search engine is broken.  At least according to other posts.

Anyway, I have played a bit of this.  Have advanced a few tiers but not all the way.
In short, it's fun but not very realistic.  It doesn't have the realism of say, World War 2 Online but is probably a step or two more realistic than the Battlefield series.

For example, you drive in 3rd person, but do tend to shoot in first.  Sight ranges are artificially cut off and there are 'upgrades' you can have to improve your sight range or camoflage your tank.  The developers did at least take some pains to try to model the different vehicles profile in such a manner to affect the sight range thus it's harder to spot low profile tanks (i.e. tank destroyers) than it is to say a big Tiger or IS-2.  Terrain is generally non-destructible (fences I think can be driven through though) so you can take refuge in an already open building but you can't knock a building down to move or shoot through.  There are some fantasy and post WW2 tanks in the tech tree at the higher level but I haven't made it that far.

Over on the wargamer there's a huge thread on it but I can't link to it from work where I am right now.  It's generally agreed to be pretty fun.  I like it as a nice quick diversion.  Battles take 15 mins (or ten, i forget what the timer is atm) at most so it's easy to get in and do a battle or two and then go do whatever.  There is a bit of a grind feel to it at times but still, every battle is a bit different simply because you are always playing against different people so that keeps me coming back.

It's beta right now so payment isn't applicable yet but I'm not sure if I'm wild about the pay model.   Thankfully, you don't necessarily have to pay for anything and still can advance your way through the tiers.  I think you'll just do it slower and at a bit of a disadvantage.  For instance, a top crew is critical to be competitive after the first tier or two and it takes a long time for them to experience up.  However, if you paid for 'gold', then you can level them up instantly.  The dynamics of this though when it goes live may be different than beta where everyone gets free gold.  It just kind of depends on how many people pay in but I can imagine that the lower tiers will be dominated by people who don't pay because those that do probably are zooming up the ladder.  Hard to say.

Those are my initial impressions.  Like I said, go to the Wargamer forums and you will see a pretty big thread on it.  Sorry I can't link to it from work!

Quarter to Three has a ~2100 post ongoing thread about it:

As stated above not the most realistic thing, but it was fun when I last played in the beta.

I tried it,didnt care for it.I dont like the fact you can have opposing forces tanks on your team.It reminds me of a fps.If I want that I will stick with BC2 Vietnam.

It's a fun, addicting and historical oriented game. Not a simulation. It's the only game that I've ever been able to interest my wife in playing. My whole family often plays it together.

Highly recommended as a change of pace from some of the more serious wargames, or if you just have the urge to meet new and interesting people....and put a 76mm AP round into their ammo rack!

It's a lot of fun.

There's some gameyness to it, but it's not as bad as I had originally imagined before playing it.

I think there were some early design decisions that haven't been well-received such as the artillery given top-down space laser view to nuke people from orbit.  Another would be the odd sighting system in that you will see (and sometimes not see) enemy tanks just appear out of nowhere or not be able to see them while they're shooting you on some rare occasions.

Despite some of the issues, of which they say they're working on (it's Open Beta - not release yet), it's a very fun game.  If you're interested, then sign up and download because there's no obligation other than entering an email address for your login account.

You can destroy the enviroment to a point. A PzII is able to knock a hut over but not a real house. Same with a small tree but not a big tree. A Ferdinand will be able to do some serious damage to some houses and knock over big trees.... walls are pretty much a given to be knocked over......

Upgrades are pretty realistic. Drivetrain, engines, cupola, main gun etc etc.
And no ridiculous gun upgrades..Pretty much in keeping with historical outfitting. So no 88 on a Pz IV......
And the skills to upgrade your crew are pretty much in keeping with the ambiance..Better camo, faster reload for the gunner, putting out fires faster, etc etc..

Btw, its fun driving a loltraktor with its doorknocker.....
