Possibly weird that

Anyway I kiond of agree with the original poster.

I always get a nasty shock in the US when I am buying anything and the price I negotiated with the salesman isnt the price I end up paying - I always walk away muttering about price hikes and tax and rip offs because its not what I am used to.

The fact that I think the sales tax is about 5 or 6% in Vegas (cannot remember) and its a surprise to me always shocks me. But then if you think about I am paying 20% in the UK but I never notice it as its always included in the price so actually the UK is the rip off.

I guess it comes back to what you are used to seeing and paying for but ultimately the tax man will get you somehow - in many ways I prefer the up front way its charged in the US at least I know how much tax I am paying whereas in the UK a lot of it is hidden....

Apart from wanting the thread locked, what was the point of posting that comment here?

You honestly can't recognize old fashioned trolling? *grin*

Warspite1

Yes - it was a rhetorical question i.e. it needed no answer.

I suspect in the time honoured British way. Whilst some nations people would take to the streets, barricade highways, go on general strike etc etc, We would mumble under our breath, have a little moan to anyone who cared to listen, then proceed to bend over and ......... And then we would go home for a nice cup of tea .

Until the end consumer, each company (registered for VAT) can recover the VAT it suffers on its purchases, but then charges VAT on to its customer. the amount of the tax increases as it moves on the chain because as each company processes it ("adds value") the base cost upon which the tax % is applied increases. So the final consumer (who does not sell on) has to eat the tax. the tax is not cumulative, but increases as suppliers "add value".

Thanks for the post, I understand, but however it is set up the main point is that the final consumer pays more. The reason I made the joke about "value reduced" is that the consumer is paying more for the same product, which translates to less value for the money. "Value Added" is a mis-nomer and word game to make it all sound better or more reasonable. Now tax is tax, so whether it is sales tax, VAT tax, luxury tax or any combination of them, the bottom line of how much does the consumer end up paying is the most important detail.

If I lived in Europe I would be more concerned about the Muslim people cramming themselves into enclaves and purposely failing to assimilate so they can use your own laws against you in order to bring about Sharia ad nauseum, than your VAT issues. Either way, you gents are toast.

That's uncalled for. There is no need to say something like that.

Anyhow, before I go on another rant in that direction, the VAT I believe is regressive, not progressive. At least that's what I remember back in Economics 101. The problem is that the poor income family who scrapes by on 30$ G a year, spends most his cash on items which are under a form of VAT. The guy who brings home 100$ K a year, may also spend roughly about 30K of that on similar items, and hence pay the same amount of vat, HOWEVER, the rest of his cash can be spent on investments and other securities which don't fall under VAT and hence, according to theory by the Tax-Man, is getting a bit of a free ride somewhere in there, despite the higher brackets.

Also, when one owns small business, a lot of stuff can count as investment and can be deduced from VAT. For example a company computer may also be a high end gaming rig. Company furniture can double as home furniture when working at home. It's actually encouraged for small companies here. The downside is that this line of thinking encourages insane spending just to not be the one that pays VAT which results in a someone living on high level but ending up without any savings, which may end in a big debt. IMHO it's better to lose 20% of money in VAT tax and keep the rest than end up with an "investment" that doesn't really bring any income and without financial security.

I do end up paying it all the time... well unless it's groceries or other basic needs :P And while it can seem painful at times, at least I like to look at places like Sweeden which IIRC have to pay 1/4 the whole price just in vat (ouch!). That really doesn't make me FEEL as bad when taken into consideration.

Now, to the Original thread poster, I suppose if the VAT due to Matrix-Games titles is being crippling, you could try to incorporate your home-gaming room, and then see about deducting your game expenses that way :P

The only hitch is you may be in the hot-seat when you get an audit notice in the mail by Mr. Tax-Man.

I wonder if such thing would be possible to pull off. I usually play wargames and work at the same time. Maybe, it could count as a program for increasing worker's efficiency or decreasing no-work time? AD-HD attention aid?
