I am dealing with the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor raid and am trying to get my BBs patched up enough to move to the West Coast to complete repairs. I have notice a few things about the repair process and have a few questions.

Setting the BBs to pierside repair works well enough to reduce the systems damage. I have noticed that the greater the damage, the longer it takes to reduce 1 point of systems damage. My understanding from previous posts is that you need to reduce the systems damage below 50% in order to have a good shot of moving the ships to the West Coast. I also noticed that in a previous game where pumps failed and a relatively small level of major flotation damage proved fatal during the long trip to the coast.

What I can't seem to figure out is whether the shipyard repair is working at all to reduce the major flotation damage. I have placed ships with greater than 50 or 60 point of float damage in the shipyard and 14 days later there have been no repairs. On one ship I got a quick repair of 1 point and then nothing for 14 days. Is this working as designed or is the shipyard stuck. I remember in WitP the thought was if you did not get any repairs for a very long period of time, the advice was to put the ship in a TF for a turn and restart repairs.

The other question I have is how much of the float damage needs to be repaired before I move the BBs back to Bremerton. I tried moving one BB with systems damage in the 30s and float damage of about 60 back to Bremerton and started hearing about floatation failures 1 day out of Pearl. I got the ship back to PH, but really would rather not tie up the yard for months trying to reduce the float damage below 50. Any thoughts?

Major flotation damage takes a lot of time.

I repair major flotation damage to 50 or less using the shipyard and then system damage to 0 using pierside.
But, when I have a number of badly damaged ships I put 2 or 3 into the shipyard first that have the smallest amount of major flotation damage to repair and put the rest on pierside repair. I try to not put the shipyard into the red for flotation damage repair.

I have not lost any ships making the crossing. BTW, put the TF at cruise speed to further increase your chances.

As Nomad said, I try to get sys to 0 before moving a badly damaged BB or CV. In one PBEM, the Enterprise had FLT of 93 and sys of 0 and I managed to get her to Capetown from CoCo Islands and then to East Coast. I am only in a hurry to move ships to the West Coast if I think PH is going to get hit again/invaded. The old slow BB's are best suited for bombardments and invasions and you are probably not going to be doing too many of those early in the war.

Thank you both for the replies.  One follow up question.  Does port size have an effect on repair times for ships in a shipyard?  There are several really major shipyards on the West Coast at smallish size 5 and 6 ports.

Hi-I have 2 OBBs at PH. My game is at mid-May 43. Both ships are in shipyard, with flt damage ranging from 61-66, sys dameage on one is zero, other in the green.

How can I speed up the repair? Should I put setting to highest priority(I can't remember the term)? Both show over 500 days to completion of repairs.

Comments, please.

If you want to chance it, and the odds are pretty good, you could send the one with 0 system damage back to the West Coast. Make sure you have a Captain on the BB with a high Naval rating( I think it helps ), put the BB in an Escort TF with 2 or 3 DDs, set it to cruise speed and send it off. For the other one, put in into pier side repair until it is at 0 system damage and then send it off too. If you put them in Seattle with NO other ships in the shipyard they should repair in about 250 - 300 days.

I think shipyard repair capability is independent of the port size. Seattle has the best shipyard on the WC and repaired my ships very quickly even when the port wasn't fully developed.

No - see s.14.2.3.1 on page 244 of the manual. A ship in a shipyard gets no assistance from the other repair point sources.

which often makes repairing a severely damaged capital ship in an ARD twice (or more) as fast as repairing it in the biggest shipyard available as it seems ARD are supported by lots of nav support too. What takes more than 200 days in the big West Coast shipyards to repair usually takes some 90 days or less in my ARDs in ports of only size 6 for example but having 500 or more nav support.

Is there a size limit to an ARD? There should be! When and where do the first ARDs appear in the grand campaign for the Allies? Do the Japs have them? Thanks in advance... Hal

You get 5 of the things beginning in May 43. Not sure about the capacity but its tonnage is listed at 30800 tons in the ship database.

Listed on the ship detail page: "Ship Lift Capacity = 55,000 tons"

I know that when you change the priority in a shipyard it increases the tonnage used. Is their a similar restriction when the ships are pierside and you increase the priority to critical?

The only repair yards you should use of the west coast are Seattle, San Francisco, Mare Island, Los Angeles and San Diego
They should be able to handle all of your repair needs

Yes, it uses more of the port's "op" points.
