Subs

After yesterday's events, we ordered the Perth wolf pack to swarm around Busselton. The move bears fruit as I-170 torpedoes and sinks CA Astoria. Banzai!

In return, Gar sinks an xAKL near Toyohara. K-XIV misses a PB near Singers.

Something Allied hits a mine, either a sub near Singapore or a kamikaze xAK at Broome. A TF symbol at Broome shows something slipped past our subs and LBA. Tracker claims an Allied DD went down, so maybe it was an escort at Broome.

4th Fleet

Kwajalein makes forts 5.

Not much else to report as weather shuts down Burma other than milk runs by our Helens. A quiet day.

I've caught up and passed you in my PBEM game. It helps when you have a day like yesterday when 4 turns are done. Interesting to see where each of us are at.

All I wanted for Easter was a turn from my opponent... not seen yet!

It certainly is interesting to see how much variety the game can produce. While there are a few issues overall I think it captures the options and feel of the war and the key limitations.

Cheers

Rob

Yes, many similarities, but many differences as well.

CF and I used to regularly get at least one turn per day. Unfortunately, the arrival of the third air group to CV Cribtop (i.e. My third child) has slowed me down from that pace.

Sounds like the CV is overstacked :)

On holidays down the beach with my three kids so know the feeling!

Barely capable of flight Ops, my friend! Actually, it's not so bad, but I am an OCD player that checks everything before hitting send, so the diaper routine is just enough to push me over the edge.

Subs

The Oz wolf pack onslaught continues. Today I-180 torpedoes DD Mahan and sinks her in the harbor in Broome. Looks like the Aussies there are hurting for supplies. I-173 puts two torps into CL Leander near Perth, finishing the damaged cruiser. The same sub then misses DD Case. The Skipper of I-155 puts in a request that he get an "assist" on the Astoria and Leander.

A Glen is shot down by CAP at Ndeni. IJAAF ASW planes claim another hit on Trusty. This time the sub is in the Miri port hex, which we will have to do something about.

5th Fleet

Onnekotan Jima makes forts 3.

SE Fleet

New base forces offload at Eniwetok, Ponape and Kusaie.

Burma

We sweep Schwebo, going after the remnants of the P-40 group hit at Meiktila a few days back, but there is no CAP.

China

One KMT Corps pushes down the road from Chengteh toward Changsha. We assume this is a probe to look in on our defenses in case the Tuyun/Kweiyang offensive stripped Changsha bare. It did not, but we shall see whether CF tries something on this front. He has a lot of LCUs at Chengteh and Chikiang, but they got roughed up in the original Changsha battles.

Subs

Still hunting the ill-fated SCTF near Perth, I-4 sinks DD Case today. I-173 misses DD Balch in the same hex. Cribtop Intel believes this task force consisted of ships damaged at Exmouth that were making for larger shipyards to finish repairs. Thus, add a CA, a CL and 2 DDs to the haul from that victory! The damaged condition of the DDs no doubt slowed them up enough for our subs to register these hits.

I-2 is DC'd by two RN DDs near Trivandrum, hit multiple times and forced to surface. She gets a penetrating hit on DD Thracian before being sunk in a hail of gunfire.

O-16 enters the Boela hex (note that CF is doing this a lot lately). The shallow waters allow a PB convoy escort to score a penetrating hit on the sub.

4th Fleet

Tarawa makes forts 5.

Vaitupu, which is empty, is reconned by the Allies for the first time today. We may send subs and a CLTF down here to try to catch CF if he goes for this base.

SE Fleet

P-38s and B-24s hit the port at Milne Bay today. CF probably is reacting to SigInt here as we just routed a supply ship to the base yesterday.

Burma

The Allies bomb the airfield at Cox's Bazaar today. I suspect the Bazaar will be closed for some time!

The UK 2nd Division arrives in hex 76, 107 to find an IJA brigade, the RTA Cav Division, and two arty units. This hex is important because it protects the right flank of Taung Gyi (1 hex to the West) and because the trail to Thailand's "back door" branches off from here. We are moving troops to reinforce Taung Gyi, which will in turn allow more troops to enter this hex. Another response is that 1/3rd of the RTA infantry division trapped in the Chinese mountains has been marching quietly on an empty Bhamo in the enemy rear and will arrive to take the base tomorrow. Strictly a harassment move, but fun.

Other

Cribtop Intel continues to monitor the status of CV Enterprise. She is still on the sunk list as we approach five months after the Battle of the Torres Islands. Is the Big E really sunk? Is that why she wasn't present at Exmouth? Who knows, but another month or so on the sunk list and we may start to believe.

This musing caused me to play around with the sunk ships lists to compare losses generally. Let me tell you, that was not a pretty sight from the Allied perspective. Horrific USN and RN losses for little in return by the IJN, particularly in the areas of CVs, BBs, CAs and assault shipping.

Subs

I-174 misses DD Norman near Chittagong. IJN ASW harasses Shad near Sasebo.

5th Fleet

Recon spots xAKs and more ships in harbor than usual at Dutch Harbor. Still on the lookout up here for an Allied move.

SE Fleet

B-24s bomb the tiny port at Horn Island. Madang makes airfield 3.

Burma

Odd move today. CF sent three DDs into the Cox's Bazar hex. They don't bombard and linger all day. 18 Nells from Port Blair twice try for the ships, losing one bomber to a lone Hurricane on LRCAP in the PM phase. Was this a CAP trap gone wrong or some kind of probe? Hard to tell.

Elements of an RTA Division enter the Bhamo hex today and will take the base tomorrow as it's empty.

We night bomb Schwebo airfield to go after the few remaining P-40s.

The Allies hit the CB airfield hard. Our Helens return the favor by bombing the UK 2nd Division for good hits near Taung Gyi.

Toungoo makes forts 6, which is great news.

Subs

I-25 eludes enemy ASW patrols near Brisbane.

Halibut duds on an SC near Sasebo.

5th Fleet

Much to our happy surprise, the brave and battered AMC Aikoku Maru limps into port at Etorofu today. The ship took two Avenger torpedoes when the enemy sent a CVE into northern Japanese waters a while back.

SE Fleet

Shortlands makes forts 6. Milne Bay makes airfield 4.

Burma

The UK DDs at Cox's Bazar withdraw.

We occupy Bhamo and mess with the Allied LoC.

Karachi makes port 8.

Combined Fleet

KB arrives at Babel today. Shokaku, Zuikaku and several DDs will head for Japan for upgrades.

A very quiet day as bad weather shuts down even most of the usual milk runs for both sides.

SE Fleet

Buna makes airfield 4, Buka airfield 3. Lots of engineers about to move on to their next jobs in northern NG and the Marianas.

Southern Army

Medan makes airfield 4.

Subs

I-174 is engaged by the same 3 RN DDs as they return to CB. Again, the DDs don't bombard. Are they making a beer run?

RO-67 is DC'd near Ndeni. A shame she didn't get off a shot as the convoy contained several xAPs.

5th Fleet

Shikuka makes port 6, which is great for resource extraction purposes.

Southern Army

Saumlaki and Sinabang both make airfield 3. Port Hedland makes forts 4.

Engineers re-deployed from SE Fleet AO land at Dobo to get to work.

Burma

As mentioned, the UK DDs mill around at CB. The Port Blair Nells again waste torpedoes on them, again there is no CAP trap. Cribtop Intel believes CF is counting on the IJN to try to lift 17th Army out of CB and that this is his way of watching for such a move. This is good as it means he doesn't see the threat to Akyab.

We sweep Schwebo and are surprised to find a significant CAP. Mr. Tojo again cleans up, with losses of 13:3 in our favor.

China

Two KMT corps are probing the overland route from a hex near Ankang toward Sian. We have local reserves ready to deal with this move.

Other

The new tanker routes are getting fuel and Oil to Japan on or even ahead of schedule. About two months to drain everything to Honshu.

General Impressions

Cribtop Intel expects CF to try something in April. Until then, we think things will be quiet outside of Burma. We are watching NOPAC and garrisoning the Kuriles, but since he didn't move in early March we expect him to wait for Hellcats. NOPAC and SWPAC are the best bets, with the Gilberts a close third choice.

Subs

The three musketeer destroyers again encounter I-174 as they retire from the CB hex.

Pogy duds on an SC near Formosa.

SE Fleet

Vella LaVella makes forts 2.

Burma

Our Helens hammer Scwebo, but the enemy has withdrawn his air groups.

CF returns the favor by pounding the closed airfield at CB.

Another quiet day.

Subs

Allied ASW forces DC and sink a mini-sub posted in the Colombo hex.

SE Fleet

Seaplane outpost Rossel Island makes forts 2.

Southern Army

Dobo makes forts 2.

Burma

Our Helens hit Meiktila to harass a large troop concentration in the open. They get good hits at 130(23) and will go again tomorrow.

Uttaradit makes forts 3.

Subs

Halibut duds on an SC near Kagoshima.

SE Fleet

Milne Bay makes port 2. The Engineers here will move to New Ireland and then to the Marianas.

Burma

In a bit of a well-timed surprise, CF marches in a new LCU at Taung Gyi and tries a DA. It is well-timed because we had moved a Brigade into the hex just to the East while a fresh IJA division is one day away on the road. The assault drops forts to 3 with 1:2 odds, casualties 1117(31) vs 950(2).

We will bomb with everything that can fly tomorrow but doubt CF will attack again as he suffered about 300 disabled squads. Once the new division arrives we are confident he will not make further headway here, but we hate to lose a fort level.

Any maps to give an idea of what's happen in various sectors, especially Burma? I'd like to see where you've built the MLR there and how he's challenging that. Also how far into the Pacific you have extended.

I owe y'all maps but I'm having technical difficulties. Since we moved I only use my old PC for playing AE. It is so old it has no capability to pick up our wireless Internet. I could plug it in if I can find a 25 foot cable.

I planned to put screenies on a thumb drive and post using my wife's laptop (this is how I send turns to CF). However, the website doesn't recognize me from the laptop and I of course can't remember the weird forum password. The website recognizes my iPad, which is how I post here, but of course thanks to the Apple/Microsoft rivalry iPads can't use thumb drives.

I'm stuck for now, but plan to search my e-mail folders on the old PC. I think I saved the original e-mail with the forum password.

PS - to give some idea in words, the current front line runs from one hex East (map) of Taung Gyi past Toungoo and Prome (with a buffer zone of one unoccupied hex row between these bases and the Allied owned bases in the Irrawady valley), then on to a hex just NE of Ramree. 17th Army has recovered a bit and is currently marching to seize Akyab from the North. I have a plan to take Akyab with an enemy surrender. Then I am a short march from isolating the Indian stack NE of Ramree and basically collapsing the enemy in the Arakan, threatening the Allied right in Burma generally.

ASW DDs harass I-5 near Pearl.

SE Fleet

B-24s hit Milne Bay's port. These intermittent uses of 4Es here and at Horn Island are very much to our liking, as they are hitting small, easily repaired bases that are not part of our air defense network. There are far more painful uses of these units the Allies could be executing.

Burma

168 Helens pound the Allied troops at Taung Gyi, but the enemy does not launch another ground attack here. The fresh division (33rd) doesn't quite make the hex but is only 4 miles out on a good road.

CF does, however, order the 2nd UK Division to try a DA in the hex just east of Taung Gyi. This goes very poorly for him with odds of 1:5, casualties 583(7) vs 120(1). Once the 33rd Division pulls into Taung Gyi tomorrow, we will be able to reinforce this hex with the A brigade of 56th Division. Both of these hexes, and thus our right flank in Burma, should be secure for now.

Combined Fleet

Shokaku, Zuikaku and 6 DDs begin long overdue upgrades at Kure today. Once they finish up we will rotate Akagi/Kaga home. Then it will be the CVLs turn and we should be caught up.

We have been aggressively scouting the Arabian Sea and have found nothing moving. Odd. Efforts to Glen recon Diego Garcia haven't been successful in giving info on LCU count or troop strength. We will await arrival of a special Glen sub with a crew trained in recon. If DG is understrength, we may seize it.

Despite ASW TFs and aircraft watching the area, Amberjack sinks a TK in the East China Sea. Fortunately, it was the smallest and slowest ship in a huge convoy bound for Sasebo. We have converted all the STD classes, and losses of TKs to date are so low that we have about 8 TKs in the Home Islands waiting for the chance to join this TF.

RO-67 misses a DD in an ASW TF near Ndeni.

5th Fleet

CF is reconning bases he hasn't visited yet up here. KB is waiting at Truk for the slightest sign of a move.

SE Fleet

B-24s hit Milne Bay's airfield. CF is using P-38s in the escort mode. We may try to jump these raids to go after the escorts as much as the bombers. Hmm.

Burma

Helens hammer at troops in Taung Gyi again, but no attacks today by the Allies. 33rd Division arrives in the base hex, which is now deemed fully secure by Cribtop HQ.

CF recon bombs our vanguard tank regiment of 17th Army near Akyab. This small unit is moving to isolate the base, while 17th Army is following behind straight for it. Intention is to seize the base and force the surrender of 9 enemy LCUs. At this point, we don't see a way for CF to escape the capture of this base - he clearly expected us to attempt a seaborne evacuation from Cox's Bazar.

Estimate 4 days until the first attack at Akyab.

We are getting near to production of several second generation airframes. Does anyone have an R&D 101 thread? Want to make sure we don't make a bonehead move.

Finally, as one of the minority of Americans who love soccer, go Gunners tomorrow! Win or tie vs Man U at the Emirates and a top four finish looks likely!

Scary day or two!

We had a torrential thunderstorm with almost 3 inches of rain last night. Not sure if the storm was involved, but something knocked the cookie out of my iPad and I was a Guest. I recall the stories of losing your password and having to change forum names. I was on the verge of breaking out Cribbit as my new handle, CanoeRebel!

Fortunately, this disaster motivated me to look through the saved e-mails file on my old PC. Sure enough, there was the original forum password e-mail. So, not only am I back online, I can now log in from our new laptop and post screenshots again! It's a busy week at work, but later this week or over the weekend we'll catch up the AAR and provide some screenshots.

Ahhh, I miss those southern thunderstorms. Getting woken in the night by lightning hitting the transformer on the next block, driving in that rain that feels like the road just dipped into a lake, or best, getting caught out on a walk on what was a nice day and being soaked to the bone!. Seriously though, they are fun.

Looking forward to the screenies.

Yeah, I joke that Central Texas (outside of the recent drought) gets about 34 inches of rain - same as Seattle. It's just they get drizzle 300 days a year while we get 10 big storms a year.

We try the mini penetration again at Ndeni just to keep CF on his toes. It sinks, which is why we rarely use this tactic.

5th Fleet

Alert! Glens spot a strong SCTF, with BBs and CAs reported, approaching Dutch Harbor from the East. Search aircraft also report what looks like a TK convoy and a 6 ship merchant TF at Umnak Island. Is this a bombardment, a feint or an invasion?

We consider scrambling KB from Truk but decide to respond only with local forces for now. This could be a feint, and a move into the Aleutians outposts at this late date is not a major concern. Further, we can always engage Combined Fleet later to cut off an invasion if it seems to threaten anything more strategically important. We don't want the CVs in the Arctic when Sumatra is invaded, for example.

For now, we scramble two SCTFs with 2 BBs, 2 torpedo CLs (Kitakamis), and 4 DDs. Intention is to send in the CLs + 2DDs with the BBs following. If we catch it right, the Long Lances chase off the enemy SCTF while the BBs savage the transports. Vals are on the scene as well, and we could increase the LBA commitment quickly.

Burma

CF throws everything he's got at our vanguard tank regiment near Akyab with mixed results. We suspect he has awakened to the danger here.

Our Helens hammer Meiktila and get a surprising result, hitting an Indian Division for 188(5) and two support units for a painful 36(32). That's a crazy ratio of destroyed squads for an IJAAF 2E raid. Perhaps his supply status here is poor?

I-29 is DC'd near Cold Bay by the big SCTF spotted by her Glen yesterday. More on this in a moment.

Pogy torpedoes and sinks a big xAP in the strait between Formosa and Luzon. This was a convoy of fast xAP and xAK returning to Japan to provide some lift capacity in the Home Islands. I never send ships through here, but ran this convoy on purpose. I was willing to accept this loss because I wanted to dangle a big TF in front CF so he continues to allocate subs here where I don't plan to operate.

Saury torps but doesn't sink a supply xAK near Rabaul.

5th Fleet

The SCTF spotted by I-29 contained BBs Mississippi and Colorado, CA Quincy, and 5 DDs. This is very useful intel because these ships have been on station in NOPAC for CF since mid 1942. This, plus the lack of evidence of any CVs, increases the odds this is just a feint or a local move. Search planes resolve the merchant TF at Umnak to be heavy on xAPs, so either a reinforcement or an invasion seem the likely missions. All of this confirms our decision to pass on committing KB.

SE Fleet

Milne Bay again is visited by 4Es. We will try a night raid on their base with Nells.

Southern Army

Taberfane goes to forts 6, freeing an engineer group to work Saumlaki. Sinabang goes to airfield 1.

Burma

Meiktila bombing inflicts 411(4) today.

The maneuver elements of 17th Army enter the hex immediately north of Akyab and press on toward the base itself. CF again bombs the hex, but the pain is minimal now that it is spread across so many units. We will spring an LRCAP trap here soon, and also commit the Helen armada to blast enemy LCUs at Akyab.

Yeah, I joke that Central Texas (outside of the recent drought) gets about 34 inches of rain - same as Seattle. It's just they get drizzle 300 days a year while we get 10 big storms a year.

A lot of people move to the NW after visiting in the summer. Oddly, because the winds shift to coming from the East, where it is hot and dry, there is no rain most years from July to September. Just gorgeous 80-95 degree days. Perfect summers.

Then November hits and they don't see the sun for 5 months! By January the stock of both full-spectrum light bulbs and Prozac are running low.

This is great! Perfect military deception in use. I love these games with subs and convoys. I've been doing that for a while and it does seem to pay off. There are some subs that continue to hang out where they'll never catch anything, and I also have several ASW air units picking them off if they stay too long.

Agreed. In fact, I hunt the subs in that corridor as part of the Maskirovka that I am still using it!

Time to catch up and provide a screenshot of Burma at last. A few interesting developments in NOPAC, too!

Subs

I-6 misses a DD escorting the Mississippi/Colorado SCTF and takes a penetrating hit in return. The big TF ends up at Umnak Island.

Wahoo duds on an xAK in the convoy that recently passed south of Taiwan.

5th Fleet

Our search planes report numerous CVs with the enemy TF at Umnak. While Cribtop Intel is doubtful there are CVs or CVEs in this TF, we don't doubt they could be nearby, especially if CF is indeed planning an invasion up here. Our own SCTF is drawing nearer to the Aleutians to contest any such move.

Southern Army

A picket ship off Sumatra is overflown by enemy aircraft. This is probably LBA out of Ceylon, but we re-configure our Nell search patterns at Port Blair to give plenty of advance warning if something is up.

Burma

The enemy bombs the Cox's Bazar airfield with 2Es and the troops of 17th Army with 4Es.
