Another question to answer: to my knowledge, Gridley survived the war without a scratch.

Did Cuttlefish offer any reasons why his presence on the forum has gone from daily to none, and the AAR was completely dropped? As you can see now it's too bad as it was working up to be really interesting.

I for one know how it is writing about a continual spiral downward, and it's not easy, but I remember he had some grandkids that arrived recently as well.

I'm not sure - he never said outright. Doing what he does must be a ton of work - as long as it took me to write each first person account, I can't imagine doing it once a day or even once a week. He had a grand baby and I believe for a while he was playing a second game. Given that the story ended right after Torres Islands, maybe it was player morale (in which case it's all my fault ). I can say this, based on our e-mail communications, Cuttlefish is healthy and happy, which is good.

All good to hear. I'm sure it's some combo of all of the above. Maybe he's doing some 'real' writing in the genre. He could definitely do it!

Congratulations on your victory.

Acronyms and euphemisms are the bane of newbies. For example, your post #4's list of abbreviations is great and highly informative, however, I struggled for over and hour trying to find TB using the game map, google maps, google, the manual, and search. I went back to the beginning of your aar to see if you had defined it somewhere previously but there is was, “TB” right from the beginning (Dec 11). I finally figured that it was just common knowledge among the old timers (which it probably is) and I would eventually figure it out. Finally someone else ask and bailed me out. (Sorry, can't remember who or find it right now.) Just thought I would let you and others know. Nit-picky I know, but we are all newbies at one time.

Thanks to Feurer Krieg, obvert and you for the answers above and thanks to all who contributed to your aar and thank you for your attitude allowing any and all discussions re the game. These discussions and comments are gold to me as a newbie. The where, who, what, etc I will eventually figure-out but, for now, the “why” can only come from the experience contributed through this and other aars.

Well on to more aars. *Sigh, so many and so little time.*

Yeah, sorry about TB. I think that one threw a lot of people. I have a monster aversion to typos, and the spelling of that name seemed positively Cthulhoid to my eyes, so I went the the common board nickname for it. Should have added that to the list, though!

Thanks, FK! It does feel like something good to win a scenario 1 game. Really looking forward to the next game with stacking limits and new air rules.

Thanks, GZ and Pax. I have had a few weeks to reflect, and I am starting to seriously miss AE. I really appreciate your participation in this AAR, and I can't wait to start the next one. I have an idea who I want to play starting around Feb 1st, but I won't let the cat out of the bag yet!

PS - If either of you have any post-game comments, I'm all ears. I still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night worried about the next turn before I realize the game is over. I'm truly curious what the readership thinks about what I did, right or wrong. Let me hear it!

El Lobo - thanks for the kind words. I use a similar composition to what FK stated for dot base clean up. Two or three xAKLs (there's a class with 1725 cargo capacity that is great for this), two older escorts and an SNLF Coy. The "rowboat corps" is actually a euphemism for the automatic capture of bases that occurs when you have an occupied base near an unoccupied enemy base. It happens for free.

As for production, I've learned to set your R&D strategy on turn one - decide what planes you want and can afford and go after them from the get go.

Aim to have a reserve of 100K armaments and 20K vehicle points, then turn the factories on and off to stay near those numbers. No need to waste HI on a quarter million vehicle points.

Listen to Mike Solli and nygiants 59. They know their stuff on production.

On strategy, listen to or read the work of Alfred and Nemo. To the extent I've done well I credit their mantra of ensuring that all actions at the tactical and operational level are geared toward a coherent strategic goal. I understood this before following them (I've wargamed since middle school), but their AARs and advice really drove home the need to understand what you are doing and why at all times.

I'd have to say now, in 45, that I'd NEVER turn off armaments and vehicles. You will always use them.

Good to hear you're moving toward a decision.

+1

Think of ARM/VEH just like HI ... once made they can't be bombed. You will never not need them. It takes ~70K ARM to build a CLASS A ID ... the DEPOT ID's take about 40K. You get a LOT of ID's in 45 and you don't want them coming in at 1/3 strength. Also, you will run through an amazing amount of reaplcements once the land war in Asia heats up. If you are able to take CHI out of the war, then you are good until the SOV activate. Once they do, you will be burning (or want to use) +1000 ARM/day (that's less than 80 devices and against the SOV I lose only 80 devices on a GOOD day), 6000 HI equivalents, due to your daily losses stopping the SOV ... do the math ... yeah, if you game goes to '46 you will use all the ARM/VEH. If it doesn't, just like your HI pool, you will end with a cushion, no harm, no foul.

I really agree on this. I don't think the choices matter that much, pilot quality and user technique are more important than a point on manouver here or 10 mph speed there. But, I really do think it important to decide on what you will R&D from the start and just focus on those. I don't spend a lot of R&D on anything except fighters .... its nice to have good bombers, but you must match up in fighters to even have a chance.

Just my thoughts ...

It really seems that IJ players who have reached the later stages of the game are in favor of continuing to crank out ARM and VEH points. I will remember that. My economy could have easily absorbed continuous production of those items.

Just started reading "Shattered Swords" again. Its easy to forget the limited number of Vals and Kates that were actually produced in '42. It will be a few years before I go back to playing Japan, but I will do so by first doing a comprehensive research and posting on the forum of what to produce and how many each factory will produce. Getting a handle on airframe and engine production is still the most difficult thing IMO to grasp as a Japanese player even with Tracker to assist.

Amen to that! It took me a few games to realize that no Kates are in production at game start!

Thanks, GZ! It was a long journey and I learned a lot. I am taking a little break but do indeed plan to get back in the fight. I hope to play one game as Allies in order to improve my knowledge of the game, then mostly play Japan from there on. Thanks for reading and contributing!

LOVE the Cribtop Lifeboat! Hilarious!

I was always a fan of Kongos, but it took me awhile to settle on which ship class would be my formal "fanboy art."

Thought about Shokaku, Ashigara and others, but really like the lines and performance of the Kongos.

Maybe you should wait until after you've played your game as the Allies . . .?

Although, you are going to have to change that auto-signature anyway.

Hehe, I'll always be mostly a JFB even if I play a game or two as Allies, but maybe I'll sport some temporary art for Allied games. Hard to be anything other than an Enterprise fanboy, even if it is an obvious pick.

I've always had a fondness for the Astoria-class heavy cruisers myself. They were a remarkable effort of design: the only really good 8-inch cruisers that still came in under the 10,000-ton treaty limit.
