Surely there can't be any fun being had here? The game is broken!

Turn 44

16 april 1942

Nothing really happened on these last turns I skipped. And 2ndACR had meteorological problems. A big storm (hail) sort of destroyed his roof

I basically keep reorganizing the Red Army. I have to be ready when the summer fascist offensive starts.

Now I have 4 Tank Corps (with support), created on these last turns. I also have the 11 Cavalry Corps (two of them are Guards), which I had created on the first december turn. BUT I had NOT attached any support. Now I am doing that (the Guards got the support on these last turns). I will be creating one Tank Corps per turn (+ their support: 2 Tank Bns + 1 Sapper Rgt).

I will keep only 2 tank brigades per front (attached to Front HQs themselves): reserves, along with one Cavalry and three Rifle Divisions. The rest of the tank brigades will be merged to form Corps.

Some turns ago I had said the front-line armies would be almost full: 2x:24 or so. I changed my mind. If I do that I will not have Rifle divisions to assign to Stavka Reserve Armies: Shock, Guards (only one) and regular. These will be the reserves available if I need to concentrate my forces. Which I will be doing once I know where the fascists will strike. Mwahahaha, the poor things

Sooo, I think 16:24 is fine (aka 8 rifle divisions per army). With some exceptions though, like in Leningrad area. Here I will be strong. I will not take any risk

As for these reserve armies, some ideas. The Shock (3 armies) and the Guards (one army) will get minimum 5 GUARDS Rifle divisions each. The regular armies might get only 4 Rifle Divisions each. The first Rifle Corps will be created in the Shock and Guards Armies, therefore they will be Guards Corps.

I guess I could attach one Tank and Cavalry Corps to these 3 Shock Armies as well.

As for the myriad of rifle brigades, they will keep digging, preparing defensive lines behind the front, just in case I must pull back. If I see I can more or less contain the fascists I would start merging these brigades to form divisions. My priority is still having fortified places behind the front-line. I simply don't want to be caught pants down, it's an unnecessary risk to take, if you know what I mean!

Earlier in this thread I stated that cav corps have tanks; unfortunately that's a following TOE and not the Dec 1941 one...so be careful with them early on ( no tanks! ).

No problem, Randall Believe me, they do have tanks. I will be attaching two tank Bns (+ 1 sapper rgt) to these corps (support that is)

Randall, the thing is... I am a history freak (and a moron too ). That Shock army (the 2nd) is attached to Volkhov Front, as per history. During summer I'll be getting another Shock Army (the 5th).

Of course, historically speaking, the 2. Shock army got destroyed several times over up there, and produced the most infamous Soviet traitor of the war in the process. Just sayin'. This is a bit of history you might not want to repeat too closely.

I know about Blasov and his 2nd Shock, Flavio

Well... Another idea. As I already said, all the Fronts (no exceptions) have reserves (3 Rifle divisions + 1 Cavalry division + 2 Tank brigades). Sooo, if the enemy manages to break my lines, these should be the first units to appear and help to contain the fascists. The second echelon would be the Reserve Armies: Shock, Guards and Regular. And of course the various Cavalry and Tank Corps (attached or not to these armies).

Flavio, if you are reading this. I have just noticed that now I can start forming mechanised brigades and various gun brigades. I was thinking about creating 1 mechanised brigade (to form in autumn [?] Mechanized Corps) every turn and perhaps one of these independent guns brigades. Is that correct or should I wait?

The gun brigades are a waste of APs. Just wait for the divisions. The only artillery brigade worth making is the heavy rocket one, and even then I'd take a pass on it.

I wouldn't bother making mech brigades until September, when they can be immediately flipped over to mech corps. Until then, they just sit around as an ant, and you know my feelings about ants. Nor should you go wild making too many of these even when corps are available -- they require a ton of stuff to support, and the Soviet truck pool is stretched as it is.

If anything, I'm more inclined to push out more cavalry corps nowadays than historical for logistical reasons.

Alright, now that Round 2 (who's going to hit the canvas this time?) is about to start, some [so-called] strategic considerations. All my Corps are near Moscow: 7 Tank and 11 Cavalry. All the Tank Corps have support and more than half of the Cavalry Corps too.

Well, the bloody enemy Panzers Where are they, that's the question! They are concentrated in two places:

1) Velikie Luki area
2) Bryansk area

So that's where I have to concentrate my forces

P.S.: there are more panzers scattered, not a real threat given that they are NOT concentrated. Therefore I can ignore them.

And then we had the other concentration of Panzers (during the autumn and winter): in the south, south of Stalino. I suspect they will be leaving this area (not in the front-line aymore)... Will they stay in this area or reinforce the panzers in Velikie Luki and Bryansk? Time will tell...

Reserve Army in the north, to support the Leningrad and Volkhov Fronts: 3rd Army.

The "white" units you see (aka attached to Stavka) are the diggers (dig or die!): defensive lines and strongpoints.

Oh, the regular armies have 4 Rifle Divisions each. The Shock and Guards have minimum 5 Guards Rifle Divisions. And yes, all the HQs have PLENTY of support

Production. I am not really paying attention to these screens Are these numbers good or bad? I have no idea!

Oh, I've got 1.609 T-34s and 617 KV-1s in the pool That has to be a good thing, I suspect.

I just counted them: I still have 15 Rifle Divisions attached to Stavka itself. Either I might form other Reserve Armies (let's say 3 regular armies) or reinforce the Reserve Armies already operational.

And 10 Cavalry Divisions (not counting the reserves of the Fronts. As above, more cannon fodder I might put to good -or bad- use)

How is your truck ratio TD?

If you don't have much for KV formations, I think there is a heavy tank support unit either in play or coming soon if you want to put them to work. One word of caution is they are not very reliable (reflected in the damaged section), but if you got them to burn, what the heck.

I believe the Germans are going to feel this is more like 1943 than 1942 once the fun starts back up.

Truck ratio? Hmm, I am embarassed! I think you're talking about the numbers we can see on the screenshot. Really, I still sort of ignore some things. 102k (102k). I think.

Well, I don't know what's going to happen. 2ndACR has started some probe attacks this last turn. Most of them HELD. The thing is... even if I am forced to retreat I will have fortified hexes behind (and that's possible because the rifle brigades are digging). And of course tons of strategic reserves ready to help. Not sure a German offensive might work. BUT that's something I truly ignore. We will see

Yep, that is the number I was after.

You don't want the first number smaller than the second by a lot or it means logistics issues when you start looking to advance. So far, so good. For now, you will likely want to hold off on forming more tank corps and towards the fall, depending on how things go, you will want to plan accordingly for when mech corps become available. They absolutely suck down trucks at a huge rate, but they are also probably the best all around unit the Russians get. (Tank corps have a tendency to be more "offensive oriented" and not very good on defense while mech corps are much more well rounded).

I see, so I should stop creating Tank Corps? Well, 7 is fine, I guess. In theory there might be only 2 axis of enemy advances (or main threats). I could send to each zone 3 Tank Corps + 5 Cavalry Corps

As for the reorganization of the Red Army, I kicked the Tank Brigades from the Armies. I wanted the infantry to have tank support, but in fact you can have that buying Tank Bns (support units). This has been almost done, except in the Southwestern and Southern Fronts (next turn/s).

My next objective: buying more support units. Especially Mortar, Anti-Tank, Rockets, Flamethrower

Oh, and perhaps I should put the very good leaders in charge of Fronts (currently in charge of Armies: Rokossovski, etc.). That's another objective methinks.

I make two dozen of em, myself.

You are going to be short on trucks. Even if you stopped making any new units right now, you WILL be short on trucks. (The truck shortage will appear in due course as you get better TOE for your units.) Don't stop just yet, 7 tank corps is manifestly insufficient.

There is really no way to avoid this. The game, I am convinced, flat out does not give the Soviets enough trucks or the breakdown rate is too high.

Alternately, you could try something totally different: don't make any tank or mech corps at all -- substitute cavalry corps for them on a 1:1 basis, that is to say, raise another 40 odd cavalry corps. Disband all the tank brigades, too. You still won't have enough trucks; but it won't matter that much.

That will give you a mobile force that doesn't rely on trucks. Cavalry corps are surprisingly strong and mobile.

As I mentioned before ( probably in this thread! ) the first TOE for tank corps is bad, about the strength of the 1941b tank division ( 6100 men ).

Soooo, first experiment!

To meet the first threat aka Panzers near Velikie Luki, I am bringing:

- 1st Guards Army
- 3 Shock Army
- 3 x Tank Corps
- 3 x Cavalry Corps (one of them are Guards)*

* I took the screenshot before sending the Cavalry Corps that's why they are not here.

Perhaps the units I'm bringing should NOT be next to the front-line units, by the way. Maybe I should have left one empty hex between them. Oh well.
