Turn 51

4 june 1942

Great news! The Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu are now in the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Half of the Japanese naval pilots are lost too... Midway is definitely safe!

Oops, wrong game!

I really should have read the manual. Yes, the part which deals with the weather thing. Mud again. These are of course excellent news for me (the defending side).

BUT something worth mentioning. The Voronezh Front is here. I have been investigating and I found out the front should be between the Bryansk (future 2nd Belorrussian Front) and the Southwestern Front (future 3rd Ukrainian Front). The Voronezh Front itself will be renamed 1st Ukrainian Front.

Sooo I'll be assigning to this front armies of the left flank of the Bryansk Fromt, and armies of the right flank of the Southwesten Front. Easy eh? And expensive. But nothing is free in this world, as my mom likes to say

In fact, the following armies will be assigned to the Voronezh front: 1 [Bryansk] + 2 [Southwestern] = 3

The Southwestern Front will only have 2 armies and given that the Southern Front has 4, I will attach one Southern front army to the former.

Then everyone will have 3 armies. Everyone will be happy

Done

Air Support is on its way. 15 Air Army will arrive next week I think. I also have (Stavka Reserve) 1 x IAD (fighters) + 1 x ShAD (tactical bombers) + 1 x BAD (level bombers) air bases. Perfect!

Turn 52

11 june 1942

"Boy, this is going to hurt trying to bust thru those forts" 2ndACR's comment on the email

Definitely, 2ndACR's pantagruelic effort will be in the Velikie Luki area... apparently... He's advanced... the poor thing

The defensive value of the units in his right flank was 19. So I massed everything in the area and unleashed the bears.

The front-line armies (2nd Shock and 4th) were reinforced by reserves of the Volkhov Front (one rifle division) and 2 Guards Rifle Divisions of the 3rd Shock Army (reserve army). The result? The offensive value was > 19 And yes, the fascists were forced to retreat. They lost like the 40% of the tanks so fair enough.

Really, I don't know how he is going to make it I am sort of perplexed, maybe an offensive is impossible here.

I don't want to sell the skin of the wolf but...

The other Panzer threat near Bryansk, Orel, Kursk. Not sure there is a real threat here. 1st and 4th Shock Reserve Armies are behind the front, just in case

Hmmm, strange place for him to attack. What is he hoping to achieve, even if he succeeds? He must see that there are masses of Soviets behind the front...

Edit: I was referring to the Velikye Luki attack.

Tarhunnas, there will ALWAYS be masses of Soviet hordes... Once I know where the panzers are concentrated I will apply my axiom. I can't see how he is going to avoid that... A feint... But soon or late I will know the destination of the panzers, and therefore I will MASS my forces. Nothing in this world will stop me from concentrating my hordes

I had said there was another concentration of Panzers in the south. I thought he would divert them elsewhere. The case is they are staying in this area. There are minimum 4 Panzer Divisions, I guess. Therefore I am calling the Stavka Reserve Army which was supposed to reinforce the armies in the south: the 43rd Army I'm also bringing two Tank Corps (now I have 14) and one Cavalry Corps. Just in case. I might bring another Stavka Reserve Army on next turns. We will see.

A CV of 4 or 5 is about the best you can hope for from a mid 1942 tank corps; by the end of the year, if you get some cheap victories ( look to punch Axis minors in the face ) and get them Guards status they might be around 8 by the end of the year.

Right now the TOE is kind of soft, with about 5600 men and 100 tanks ( some just the light type ).  The TOE upgrades to 63 light and 99 medium ( 1942b TOE ).  Fun factor measurably increased!

Randall, no Corps was involved in the counter-attack near Velikie Luki. But for sure, these CV = 5, if massed (let's say 9 units) may give you a good offensive power That's better than the bloody '41 ants (and always UNready!)!

In fact, even if you don't buy a lot of corps, this is NOT the 1941 army

1) units gained [national] morale = MORE ready and experienced units and that's V I T A L
2) unlike on 1941, the Armies HQs have LOTS of support units attached = you are much more organised
3) the Air Force is more organized. Not top notch but you have planes that fly AND kill enemies

Yes, Corps should make the difference but I don't agree when people say this is the 1941 army, because it is NOT: 1), 2) and 3)

He might as well go on the defensive. Seems the prudent thing to do.

Yeah, it looks like by June 42 the Germans are done and defensive is his best bet to make the war last to 44.

I give 2 ACR alot of credit for hanging in there, but he has made some mistakes along the way, and I don't think can recover. Good sport for playing it through though, most players would have quit.

I am not good at guessing things, but yes, I suspect a German offensive might be totally impossible

So what went wrong? I am not sure this game has to be the norm. But I do NOT think other games should be the norm as well (PDH and Tarhunnas amazing summer '42 offensives). The truth is the way the Soviets defended on these games was er... weird (and I am being generous...)

So what's the reality or the happy medium? That's the answer I would like to know...

I have been thinking (and maybe I should not do that ) that maybe the Soviets should be weak (à la 1941) until perhaps autumn or winter 1942... Yes, I am thinking about the national morale thing, therefore more unready and less experienced units...

I always thought a German offensive in 1942 (limited though) should ALWAYS be possible.

I only played 5 or 6 turns vs the Fascist AI so I really don't know what can be achieved in 1942

Turn 53

18 june 1942

2ndACR is jinxed. More mud

Nothing important to say. I would have skipped this turn but... I have formed my First Guards Rifle Corps. The corps has been formed in the 1st Guards Army. Given that now I have one unit (the corps) instead of three (rifle divisions that formed the corps itself), I have diverted 2 Guards Rifle Divisions (attached to regular armies) to the 1st Guards Army thing So this army will have 1 Corps + 4 Rifle Divisions. All of them Guards, obviously.

AT least they are not fire ants.

Turn 54

25 june 1942

Well, 2ndACR keeps pushing near Velikie Luki area. He clearly wants to advance in this area. Not a feint, apparently.

BUT, new strategic decisions...

1) what I called the "second Panzer threat" in the center near Bryansk, might not be a threat after all. I am starting to think that he is NOT going to advance in this area. I have two shock armies behind the front in this area. I think I will pull back one of them and replace it (or maybe not) with a regular Stavka Reserve Army.

2) in the South, I thought he would not be trying anything. But he has concentrated minimum 6 panzer divisions. Soooo, I think I will bring -among others- one Shock Army that was facing the potential threat in the center, mentioned just above that is.
